Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 5, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
After rallying to tie the score with three runs in the ninth inning, the Twins defeated the Orioles, 5-4, when Rod Carew singled, Bobby Darwin walked and Steve Brye singled in the 15th. The loss was the Orioles' fifth in a row and dropped their season record to 21-22, putting them under .500 for the first time since early 1966. In the Twins' ninth-inning comeback, Eric Soderholm homered with a man on base and the tying run followed on singles by Rick Dempsey, Steve Braun and Danny Thompson.

Red Sox 2, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Yielding only four hits, Sonny Siebert outpitched Wilbur Wood as the Red Sox defeated the White Sox, 2-0. The Red Sox, who got six hits off Wood, bunched three of them for their runs in the sixth inning. Doug Griffin led off by bunting safely. After Carlton Fisk struck out, Griffin took second on a grounder by Siebert and scored on a single by Tommy Harper. Luis Aparicio followed with a double to send Harper home with an extra run.

A's 7, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Vida Blue was lifted in the seventh inning on the short end of a 2-1 score, but the Athletics took their southpaw off the hook by rallying to defeat the Indians, 7-2. Singles by Buddy Bell and Chris Charnbliss chased Blue. After Darold Knowles relieved, an unsuccessful fielder's choice on a grounder by Jack Brohamer loaded the bases. Rollie Fingers put down the threat without a run scoring when Vince Colbert hit into a double play via the plate and Eddie Leon struck out. In the eighth, Joe Rudi doubled to drive in the tying run and Sal Bando sent the A's ahead with a single. The A's then iced the game with four more runs in the ninth, three scoring on a homer by Reggie Jackson.

[DH] Tigers 8, Angels 6 (day game) / Angels 4, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers powered their way to an 8-6 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but Clyde Wright cut them off with four hits in the second game and pitched the Angels to a 9-0 triumph. Mickey Lolich failed to finish the opener but was the winner with the aid of a three-run homer by Ed Brinkman and two-run smash by Aurelio Rodriguez. Bob Oliver, Andy Kosco and Leroy Stanton hit round-trippers for the Angels. In the nightcap, the Angels scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning and added their final tally on a homer by Sandy Alomar in the fifth.

Royals 4, Brewers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
A single by Lou Piniella, who drove in two runs in the sixth inning, enabled the Royals to defeat the Brewers, 4-2. Freddie Patek led off the stanza with a single and took third on a single by Amos Otis. After Otis stole second, Piniella rapped his decisive hit.

Rangers 6, Yankees 3 at Texas (night game):
The first homer by Frank Howard since April 29 sparked the Rangers to an 8-3 victory over the Yankees. After Howard's smash tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning, the Rangers went ahead with another run on singles by Dick Billings, Ted Ford and Jeff Burroughs. A walk and singles by Burroughs and Lenny Randle added a tally in the sixth and, after Toby Harrah walked, Don Mincher batted in two runs with a single.

Dodgers 5, Cubs 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Al Downing posted the 100th victory of his major league career, pitching a five-hitter, as the Dodgers defeated the Cubs, 5-0. Duke Sims batted in two runs in the Dodgers' support of their veteran southpaw.

Braves 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Although Ernie McAnally yielded only five hits, one of them was a homer by Darrell Evans in the third inning when the Braves scored three unearned runs to defeat the Expos, 3-2. Felix Millan was safe on a throwing error by Tim Foli and scored from third with two out on a single by Rico Carty. Evans then followed with his homer. The Expos rapped Ron Reed for 11 hits, including four by Boots Day, who batted in both their runs.

Mets 3, Reds 2 at New York (night game):
Johnny Bench belted his eighth homer in the last seven games, connecting with a man on base in the fourth inning, but that blow was not enough for the Reds, who lost to the Mets, 3-2. The Mets began their comeback with a homer by John Milner in their half of the fourth. Milner also scored the tying tally in the sixth, drawing a walk and racing home on a double by Cleon Jones. Then, in the seventh, Jim Beauchamp singled as a pinch-hitter for Jim McAndrew, Bud Harrelson walked and Tommie Agee singled to drive in the deciding run.

Astros 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Helping himself at bat with a decisive homer, Dave Roberts was the winner when the Astros defeated the Phillies, 4-3. The Astros picked up two runs in the first inning and added the other pair in the fourth when Jimmy Stewart doubled and Roberts hit his homer. The Phillies rallied for their runs on three hits and a walk in the ninth inning before Fred Gladding put out the fire in relief of Roberts.

Cardinals 5, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants' decision to pitch to Ted Simmons with first base open backfired when the Cardinals' catcher knocked in two runs with a double in the eighth inning to produce a 5-3 victory. With one away, Ted Sizemore walked and Matty Alou singled. Joe Torre grounded out, moving the runners to second and third. The Giants then elected to pitch to Simmons. After hitting his double, Simmons also scored on a single by Bernie Carbo.
