Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 11, Twins 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Sparked by Bobby Grich, who hit a three-run homer in the first inning, the Orioles defeated the Twins, 11-2, to end their five-game losing streak.

White Sox 2, Red Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
Stan Bahnsen and Rich Gossage combined to pitch the White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. Gossage, who relieved in the seventh inning, received credit for his first save. The White Sox picked up a run in the first inning on a walk to Mike Andrews and triple by Dick Allen. The other tally in the fourth crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Andrews after the White Sox loaded the bases with one out against Luis Tiant.

A's 10, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Although rapped for 14 hits, Ken Holtzman lasted the route and pitched the Athletics to a 10-4 victory over the Indians. The only extra-base hit among the Indians' safeties was a homer by Jerry Moses. The Athletics also collected 14 hits but got more mileage out of them with a homer and triple by Joe Rudi, homer by Mike Epstein and double by Sal Bando.

Angels 5, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Angels erupted for four runs in the fifth inning and breezed to a 5-1 victory over the Tigers behind the three-hit pitching of Nolan Ryan. In their big inning, the Angels had a double by Leo Cardenas and singles by Ken McMullen, Leroy Stanton, John Stephenson and Sandy Alomar.

Royals 5, Brewers 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Amos Otis drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double in the eighth inning to bring the Royals a 5-4 victory over the Brewers. Lou Piniella started the rally with a single for his third hit of the game and stopped at third on a double by Ed Kirkpatrick. After Cookie Rojas drew an intentional pass, Otis rapped his double to wipe out the Brewers' 4-3 lead.

Yankees 7, Rangers 5 at Texas (night game):
Six straight singles, followed by an error and a sacrifice fly, produced six runs for the Yankees in the third inning of a 7-5 victory over the Rangers. Steve Kline, Horace Clarke and Rusty Torres rapped the first three singles to load the bases. Bobby Murcer singled to drive in the first run. Roy White and Felipe Alou followed with singles, sending in two runs apiece. Alou took second on the peg to the plate, continued to third when the throw went wild and scored on a sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson.

Cubs 5, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Billy Williams homered with a man on base in the first inning and Carmen Fanzone hit for the circuit with two aboard in the sixth to power the Cubs to a 5-1 victory over the Dodgers. Although rapped for 13 hits, Burt Hooton yielded a run to the Dodgers only in the third on singles by Bill Buckner, Willie Davis and Frank Robinson.

Expos 5, Braves 2 at Montreal (night game):
A triple by Mike Jorgensen with the bases loaded in the third inning proved the decisive hit for the Expos in gaining a 5-2 victory over the Braves. Tim Foli struck out, but reached base on a passed ball. After Mike Torrez forced Foli, Ron Hunt was hit by a pitch and Boots Day singled to set the stage for Jorgensen's triple.

Reds 6, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
Tony Perez drove in three runs with a double in the first inning and accounted for another RBI with a grounder in the seventh to lead the Reds to a 6-3 victory over the Mets. Joe Hague contributed a homer to the Reds' attack. Johnny Bench was handed two intentional passes but went hitless in two official trips, ending his 12-game hitting streak.

Phillies 3, Astros 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies ended their nine-game losing streak by erupting for three runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Astros, 3-1. Steve Carlton was the winner over Jerry Reuss in a meeting of two former Cardinal lefthanders. In the sixth, after Larry Bowa and Don Money walked, Greg Luzinski drove them in with a double and scored himself on a single by Deron Johnson.

[DH] Pirates 12, Padres 5 (night game) / Pirates 1, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
In two decidedly contrasting games, the Pirates slugged their way to a 12-5 victory over the Padres in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader and then won the nightcap, 1-0, when Gene Alley drew a walk from Mike Corkins with the bases loaded in the 18th inning. The Pirates piled up 20 hits in the first game, including two homers by Willie Stargell and one by Dave Cash. Stargell batted in five runs. Nate Colbert and Jerry Morales homered for the Padres. In the second game, Al Oliver and Stargell beat out infield hits in the 18th and worked a double steal as Richie Hebner struck out. After Bill Mazeroski walked to load the bases, Alley drew the pass that decided the marathon. Dave Roberts, the Padres' No. 1 choice in the free agent draft, made his debut and went hitless in three trips.

Cardinals 6, Giants 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Reggie Cleveland doled out five hits and pitched the Cardinals to a 6-0 victory over the Giants. Joe Torre homered in the second inning and another run counted in the fifth on a single by Cleveland and triple by Ted Sizemore. The Cardinals finished the job of handing Juan Marichal his ninth defeat by adding four runs in the ninth with the aid of three errors.
