Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Singles by Bob Heise, Joe Lahoud and Billy Conigliaro in the eighth inning provided the Brewers with their deciding run in a 4-3 victory over the Royals. The inning before that, the Brewers loaded the bases and when Cookie Rojas threw wildly in an attempted double play after grabbing a line drive by Ellie Rodriguez, two runs scored. Bill Parsons then helped himself to the victory with a single, driving in the third tally.

Rangers 6, Yankees 2 at Texas (night game):
Starting with a two-run homer by Dick Billings in the first inning, the Rangers defeated the Yankees, 6-2. Billings also singled in the third when the Rangers added two more tallies on a single by Ted Ford, a wild pitch, single by Elliott Maddox and sacrifice fly by Toby Harrah, who batted in his 23rd run, one more than the shortstop's total for the entire 1971 season.

Dodgers 2, Cubs 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Billy Grabarkewitz scored from second base on a wild pitch by Juan Pizarro in the eighth inning to bring the Dodgers a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. Steve Garvey homered for the Dodgers in the seventh to tie the score at 1-1. Grabarkewitz, batting for Tommy John, walked in the eighth and moved up on a sacrifice. On Pizarro's wild pitch, catcher Randy Hundley had difficulty finding the ball and then slipped as Grabarkewitz raced home without a play being made on him.

Braves 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
A double by Felix Millan provided the Braves' key blow in a 3-2 victory over the Expos. Millan drove in Ralph Garr, who had singled, to break a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning. Then, after advancing to third on a wild pitch, Millan scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Darrell Evans. Rico Carty homered for the Braves' first run.

Reds 5, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
A four-run outburst at the expense of Tom Seaver in the first inning carried the Reds to a 5-3 victory over the Mets. Pete Rose and Joe Morgan led off with singles and, after Bobby Tolan grounded out, Johnny Bench scored Rose with a sacrifice fly. Tony Perez followed with a single, plating Morgan, and Joe Hague then hit a two-run homer to doom Seaver to defeat.

Phillies 7, Astros 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies, who had ended a nine-game losing streak on the previous night, made it two straight victories for the first time since May 4-5 by defeating the Astros, 7-2. Larry Bowa, who had a perfect night at the plate with a triple, two singles and a sacrifice fly, drove in three runs and Tommy Hutton accounted for two with a home run.

Pirates 11, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Pirates piled up 15 hits, including homers by Richie Hebner, Jackie Hernandez and Willie Stargell, to defeat the Padres, 11-2. Hebner's homer helped the Pirates take a 2-0 lead before they broke the game apart with six runs in the seventh inning. Hernandez led off with a solo swat. After two walks around a safe bunt by Dave Cash loaded the bases, Al Oliver batted in two runs with a single and Stargell followed with a three-run homer. The Padres ended a 27-inning scoreless streak with their pair in the ninth on a single by Larry Stahl, triple by Johnny Jeter and sacrifice fly by Ed Spiezio.

Cardinals 6, Giants 4 at San Francisco (day game):
Diego Segui, reporting from the Athletics, was rushed into action on his first day in a St. Louis uniform and gained a victory in relief when the Cardinals exploded for five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Giants, 6-4. Sam McDowell, who helped himself to a 4-1 lead with a two-run triple, faltered in the eighth and loaded the bases on a single by Ted Sizemore and two walks. Ted Simmons hit a sinking line drive to center field, where the ball got past Garry Maddox for a three-run triple. After Don McMahon replaced McDowell, Donn Clendenon smashed a homer for the Cards' winning runs.
