Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Angels 5 at Boston (night game):
Rico Petrocelli broke a 5-5 tie with a homer in the sixth inning to provide the Red Sox with a 6-5 victory in a game stopped by rain as the Angels came to bat in the seventh. Carl Yastrzemski returned to the Red Sox lineup for the first time since tearing a ligament May 9 and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Danny Cater hit his first homer in a Boston uniform. Bob Oliver and Art Kusnyer rapped round-trippers for the Angels.

White Sox 3, Brewers 2 at Chicago (night game):
At least for one time at bat, Bill Melton broke out of his slump with a three-run homer to power the White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. Melton's homer, after he had fouled off six consecutive pitches, came in the sixth inning following a double by Dick Allen and intentional pass to Carlos May. A walk, triple by Billy Conigliaro and single by John Felske gave the Brewers their pair off Wilbur Wood in the ninth.

Indians 7, Twins 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Gaylord Perry became the first 10-game winner in the major leagues this season and also hit his first A. L. homer as the Indians defeated the Twins, 7-1. The game was a memorable one for Jack Brohamer, Indians' rookie second baseman, who smashed the first two homers of his major league career.

A's 10, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
Two big innings, featuring homers by Sal Bando, Ollie Brown and Gene Tenace, carried the Athletics to 1a 0-5 victory over the Tigers. Bando and Brown each connected with a man on base in the fourth. Tenace, pinch-hitting for Darold Knowles, homered with two men on base when the A's erupted for six runs in the eighth. Bando led off that inning with a double and drove in a run with a single on his second time at bat in the outburst.

Royals 1, Yankees 0 at Kansas City (night game):
The four-hit pitching of Jim Rooker and a run-scoring single by Paul Schaal combined to give the Royals a a 1-0 victory over the Yankees. Cookie Rojas, who singled off loser Mike Kekich and advanced on a sacrifice by Carl Taylor, crossed the plate on Schaal's single.

Orioles 7, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Led by Paul Blair, who collected a single, double and triple, the Orioles defeated the Rangers, 7-2. Blair scored one run and batted in another. Andy Etchebarren accounted for a pair with a bases-loaded single when the Orioles iced the victory with three runs in the ninth inning.

Pirates 5, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Don Sutton, who had won eight straight games this year and 12 in a row over two seasons, was stopped on his streak when the Pirates scored five runs in the first inning to defeat the Dodgers, 5-1. Only two of the Pirates' runs were earned. After leadoff man Rennie Stennett was safe on a wild throw by Bobby Valentine, Vic Davailllo, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell and Al Oliver hit singles as three runs scored. Richie Hebner struck out, but Manny Sanguillen was safe on an error by Steve Garvey to load the bases. Jackie Hernandez then grounded to Bill Russell, who stepped on second for a forceout but threw wildly to first, allowing the final two Pirates to cross the plate. Frank Robinson hit a homer off Steve Blass for the Dodgers' run.

Reds 6, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Pete Rose's first homer of the season and Johnny Bench's 15th powered the Reds to a 6-3 victory over the Expos. After the Reds scored three runs in the first inning, one of them crossing the plate on a single by Bench, Rose hit his homer in the third. Bobby Tolan singled and Bench followed with his circuit clout to put the game out of the Expos' reach.

Astros 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
A two-run homer by Larry Howard, who also set up another run with a single, enabled the Astros to defeat the Mets, 4-2. In the fourth inning, Jim Wynn singled and was picked off first base but advanced safely to second on a throwing error by Cleon Jones. Bob Watson doubled to score Wynn, and Howard followed with his homer. In the ninth, a double by Doug Rader, single by Howard and squeeze bunt by Fred Gladding produced the Astros' final tally.

Phillies 4, Braves 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A triple by Larry Bowa in the eighth inning and a single by Pete Koegel gave the Phillies a 4-3 victory over the Braves. Chris Short was the winner on only one pitch, retiring Darrell Evans in the top half of the eighth after relieving Barry Lersch with two on base and two out.

Cardinals 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Bob Gibson picked up the 210th victory of his career with the Cardinals, tying Jess Haines' club record, when Joe Torre homered in the ninth inning to beat the Padres, 3-2. The Padres counted their pair on a walk and three singles in the fourth and the Cardinals tied the score in the fifth with a triple by Lou Brock, a wild pitch and homer by Matty Alou.
