Angels 7, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
Erupting for five runs in the seventh inning, the Angels defeated the Red Sox, 7-3. Homers by Carlton Fisk and Tommy Harper helped the Red Sox take a 3-2 lead before the Angels opened the seventh with the tying tally on singles by Leo Cardenas, Sandy Alomar and Ken Berry. Vada Pinson was safe on an error as Alomar crossed the plate with the go-ahead tally. Bob Oliver then smashed a three-run homer to clinch the Angels' decision.
White Sox 6, Brewers 1 at Chicago (day game):
Carlos May smashed two homers, driving in three runs, and Tom Bradley pitched a five-hitter as the White Sox defeated the Brewers, 6-1. Dave May saved the Brewers from being shut out with a homer in the ninth inning.
Indians 4, Twins 1 at Cleveland (day game):
After being held scoreless on three hits over the first seven innings, the Indians broke loose in the eighth to defeat the Twins, 4-1. Del Unser, batting for Milt Wilcox, sparked the uprising with a safe bunt and, after a sacrifice, crossed the plate on a double by Jack Brohamer to tie the score at 1-1. Following a walk to Alex Johnson, Graig Nettles singled to drive in Brohamer. Johnson went to third on the hit and Nettles took second when Cesar Tovar fumbled the ball. Both scored on a single by Buddy Bell.
A's 5, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Joe Rudi broke an Oakland club record, hitting safely in his 17th straight game, and the Athletics posted their eighth victory in a row, defeating the Tigers, 5-2. Sal Bando homered for the A's in the second inning, but the Tigers held a 2-1 lead going into the sixth when Bert Campaneris was hit by a pitch and Rudi homered off Mickey Lolich. The former Oakland club record for a hitting streak was 16 games by Danny Cater in 1969.
Yankees 8, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Four Yankees batted in two runs apiece to account for the scoring in an 8-4 victory over the Royals. Ron Blomberg started off with a two-run double in the first inning. Fritz Peterson batted in a run with single in the second when the Yankees scored five times. Johnny Callison and Bobby Murcer each hit a two-run single. Peterson added his second RBI with a single in the seventh.
Orioles 5, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Brooks Robinson drove in three runs with a homer, double and single, enabling Dave McNally to pitch the Orioles to a 5-2 victory over the Rangers. After Robinson's third RBI, the Orioles loaded the bases in the sixth inning and scored on a triple steal by Johnny Oates, Robinson and Davey Johnson. on Baylor homered for their last run in the eighth. McNally's victory was the lefthander's second straight over the Rangers and 15th in a row counting his record against their predecessors in Washington before the franchise was moved to Texas.
Dodgers 2, Pirates 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A single by Manny Mota in the eighth inning scored Maury Wills and gave the Dodgers a 2-1 victory over the Pirates, who were stopped on their seven-game winning streak. Claude Osteen, who had help from Jim Brewer in the ninth, became the first lefthander to triumph over the Pirates this season. The Pirates, who had beaten 10 straight southpaws, opened the game with a run on a double by Bill Mazeroski and single by Roberto Clemente. Osteen helped himself with a single in the sixth and scored the tying tally on a sacrifice by Wills, wild pitch by Luke Walker and infield out by Bill Buckner. In the eighth, Wills singled and took second on a sacrifice by Buckner before Mota delivered his decisive single.
Mets 5, Astros 3 at New York (day game):
Starting for the first time since May 5, Jerry Koosman allowed only four hits in six innings and was a winner when the Mets defeated the Astros, 5-3. Although Doug Rader and Cesar Cedeno smashed homers for the Astros, Koosman was able to gain his first victory as a starter since September 10, 1971. The lefthander's previous two triumphs this season came in relief.
Braves 15, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Marking two more milestones in his career, Hank Aaron hit his 699th homer and 19th grand slam as the Braves trounced the Phillies, 15-3. With his homer, Aaron moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time list, breaking a tie with Willie Mays. The Braves' superstar also tied Gil Hodges' N. L. record for most grand slams with his smash in the sixth inning. Marty Perez drew a walk and Tom Kelley was safe on a bunt when Wayne Twitchell threw wildly. With two out, Ralph Garr drew a pass to load the bases for Aaron's appearance.
Cardinals 5, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Ted Simmons hit his second grand-slam homer of the season to power the Cardinals to a 5-2 victory over the Padres. Mike Caldwell, making his first major league start for the Padres, was the victim of the smash in the third inning, but all four runs were unearned. Al Santorini and Lou Brock opened the stanza with singles. Matty Alou grounded to Nate Colbert, who tagged first base and threw to second for an attempted double play, but Enzo Hernandez dropped the ball. Donn Clendenon struck out. The Padres then passed Joe Torre intentionally in a move that backfired with Simmons' slam.
Cubs 4, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
A three-run outburst in the ninth inning on homers by Rick Monday and Ron Santo carried the Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Giants, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. Bobby Bonds homered with a man on base for the Giants in the third. The Cubs picked up a run in the fifth but trailed going into the ninth when Carmen Fanzone walked and Monday turned the game around with his homer. Santo added an insurance run with his first clout since May 2.
