Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 8, Angels 4 at Boston (day game):
Bill Lee retired eight straight batters in relief of Sonny Siebert to make it easy for the Red Sox to defeat the Angels, 8-4. Carlton Fisk hit a homer in the sixth inning to give the Red Sox a 5-4 lead. After Lee took over for Siebert in the seventh, the Red Sox scored three runs in their half to clinch the victory.

[DH] White Sox 6, Brewers 4 (day game) / White Sox 5, Brewers 4 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox smashed five homers, including three in one inning, to win the first game of a doubleheader, 8-4, and then completed the sweep by beating the Brewers in the second game, 5-4, on a bases-loaded single by Carlos May in the ninth inning. In the opener, Dick Allen hit two homers for the White Sox and Luis Alvarado, Mike Andrews and Ed Herrmann rapped one apiece. Alvarado connected in the third inning. After a single by Stan Bahnsen and forceout by Pat Kelly, Andrews and Allen followed with round-trippers. George Scott and Dave May homered for the Brewers. There was only one circuit clout in the nightcap, Kelly hitting it for the White Sox with a man on base in the fifth inning after the Brewers had jumped off to a 4-0 lead. Carlos May doubled and scored in the sixth before driving a run home with a single to tie the game in the seventh. Kelly walked to open the ninth and when Ken Sanders threw wildly on a bunt by Andrews, Kelly took third and Andrews reached second. After an intentional pass to Allen, May hit his winning single.

Twins 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Homers by Jim Kaat, Jim Nettles, and Bobby Darwin helped carry the Twins to a 5-3 victory over the Indians. Kaat hit his homer in the third inning. After Nettles' drive put the Twins ahead in the sixth, 3-2, his brother Graig homered for the Indians to tie the score in the seventh. Darwin, who entered the game as a replacement for Tony Oliva, came to bat in the eighth and broke the tie with his round-tripper.

Tigers 3, A's 2 at Detroit (day game):
Bill Freehan homered on the first pitch thrown by Ken Holtzman in the ninth inning to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Athletics, who were stopped on their eight-game winning streak. Holtzman walked Freehan with the bases loaded to force in the Tigers' first run in the third inning. Dave Duncan homered for the Athletics in the fifth and Joe Coleman, duplicating Holtzman's loss of control, walked Joe Rudi with the bases loaded to force in the A's second run. The Tigers tied the score in the eighth on a triple by Aurelio Rodriguez and sacrifice fly by Tony Taylor.

Royals 1, Yankees 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Dick Drago was the winner in a duel with Steve Kline when Lou Piniella, John Mayberry and Amos Otis hit singles for a run in the seventh inning to give the Royals a 1-0 victory over the Yankees.

Orioles 3, Rangers 1 at Texas (day game):
The Orioles broke a tie with two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Rangers, 3-1, behind the four-hit pitching of Jim Palmer. Brooks Robinson opened the frame with a single and gave way on the paths to Tom Shopay, who raced to third on a single by Johnny Oates. When Ranger reliever Horacio Pina uncorked a wild pitch, Shopay scored. Davey Johnson, who had hit a homer earlier in the game, then doubled to score Oates with an extra run.

Pirates 7, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (day game):
Roberto Clemente hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to put the Pirates ahead and then drove in another run with a single in the ninth to clinch a 7-5 victory over the Dodgers. In a baseball rarity, Manny Mota and Willie Davis both hit inside-the-park homers for the Dodgers. Mota smashed a drive down the left field line in the third inning and streaked around the bases when Rennie Stennett slipped and fell trying to cut off the ball. Davis hit a liner that caromed away from Clemente in the right field corner in the fifth. The Dodgers also had a homer into the right field stands by Bill Buckner in the sixth.

Reds 11, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
While Gary Nolan pitched a three-hitter, the Reds pounded out 16 safeties, including four by Johnny Bench, to wallop the Expos, 11-1. Bench batted in three runs. Hal McRae also drove in three. Ken Singleton homered in the seventh inning to keep the Expos from being shut out.

Astros 4, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
Cesar Cedeno, who drove in a run with a triple in the third inning, knocked in two more with a homer in the seventh to enable the Astros to defeat the Mets, 4-2. The Mets took a 2-1 lead with the aid of a homer by Duffy Dyer, but Doug Rader doubled in the seventh and scored the tying run on a single by Tommy Helms before Cedeno clouted his homer.

Phillies 3, Braves 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
Although Steve Carlton gave up eight hits to five allowed by Ron Reed, the Phillies were able to defeat the Braves, 3-1. The Phillies broke into the scoring column with two runs in the fourth inning on a walk to Oscar Gamble, singles by Willie Montanez and Tim McCarver and a wild pitch by Reed. A walk to Larry Bowa, sacrifice by Carlton, single by Denny Doyle and sacrifice fly by Gamble added a run in the fifth.

Padres 4, Cardinals 3 at San Diego (day game):
The Padres, who tied the score with homers by Nate Colbert and Larry Stahl in the ninth inning, pushed over a run in the 10th and ended their 10-game losing streak by defeating the Cardinals, 4-3. Garry Jestadt opened the overtime stanza with a single. Steve Arlin bunted to Rick Wise, who threw wildly to first base. Jerry Morales, running for Jestadt, took third and Arlin advanced to second on the error. The Cardinals brought in Joe Grzenda to pitch to Derrel Thomas, who promptly singled for his third hit of the game to drive in the winning run.

[DH] Cubs 4, Giants 0 (day game) / Giants 3, Cubs 1 at San Francisco (day game):
After being shut out in the opener of a doubleheader, 4-0, the Giants came back to defeat the Cubs in the nightcap, 3-1, to snap their eight-game losing streak. Bill Hands pitched the Cubs' shutout, limiting the Giants to five hits. Carmen Fanzone singled for two of the Cubs' runs off Juan Marichal, who was lifted in seventh inning and became the major leagues' first 10-game loser this season. Ron Bryant was the Giants' "stopper" in the nightcap. Fran Healy, who hit a double and single, scored twice for the Giants. Damaso Blanco drove in one run in the sixth inning with a single for his first major league hit.
