Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 2, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
While the Twins wasted most of their 11 hits, the Tigers used homers by Norm Cash and Mickey Stanley to gain a 2-1 victory. The Twins' lone run counted in the second inning when Rich Reese doubled and Jim Nettles singled.

Orioles 1, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Attracted by Vida Blue, plus cut-rate tickets for Family Night, the largest crowd in Oakland's history, 50,182, saw the Athletics' southpaw lose to the Orioles, 1-0, in a duel with Pat Dobson. Blue gave up five hits and yielded the Orioles' run in the eighth inning on ground singles by Davey Johnson, Andy Etchebarren and Don Buford. Mark Belanger scored as the pinch-runner for Johnson. Dobson pitched a four-hitter.

Rangers 7, Brewers 1 at Texas (night game):
Mike Paul, who pitched the first seven innings, combined with Casey Cox on a three-hitter as the Rangers defeated the Brewers, 7-1. Don Mincher led the Rangers at bat, driving in four runs with a homer, infield out and double. Dalton Jones accounted for two RBIs with a homer.

Braves 8, Mets 7 at Atlanta (night game):
An error by Wayne Garrett opened the gates for three unearned runs in the eighth inning and enabled the Braves to defeat the Mets, 11-7. Earl Williams homered for the Braves, but the Mets had round-trippers by John Milner, Garrett, Rusty Staub and Ken Boswell to help them take a 7-4 lead. Ralph Garr, Hank Aaron and Rico Carty opened the eighth with singles for a run to start the Braves' rally. Darrell Evans bunted to Cleon Jones and when Garrett missed the throw to third base, Aaron and Sonny Jackson, who ran for Carty, both scored. Evans wound up at third on the error. After holding up when Williams grounded out, Evans scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Dusty Baker.

Astros 3, Expos 1 at Houston (night game):
Jerry Reuss pitched a six-hitter and Tommy Helms batted in two runs with a single and sacrifice fly to provide the Astros with a 3-1 victory over the Expos. After the Astros scored in the second inning on a single by Terry Humphrey and double by John Boccabella, the Astros took command with two runs in the fourth on singles by Jim Wynn and Lee May, forceout of May by Bob Watson and singles by Johnny Edwards and Helms. An insurance run followed in the sixth on Helms' sacrifice fly after a double by May, hit batsman and walk loaded the bases.

Cardinals 3, Dodgers 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Reggie Cleveland pitched a four-hitter and also sacrificed successfully to set up the winning run as the Cardinals defeated the Dodgers, 3-2. The Cards jumped off with two runs in the first inning on a double by Bernie Carbo, singles by Matty Alou and Joe Torre and sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons. The Dodgers pulled even in the third when Bobby Valentine and Manny Mota doubled and Bill Buckner singled. Dal Maxvill singled in the fifth and, after Cleveland's sacrifice, crossed the plate with the deciding run on a single by Lou Brock.
