Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 4, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
The Royals, who were held scoreless on three hits in the first eight innings, erupted for four runs in the ninth to defeat the Red Sox, 4-2. John Mayberry opened the rally with a double. Paul Schaal walked and Jerry May singled to load the bases. Freddie Patek doubled, driving in two runs to the tie score and Amos Otis followed with a single to knock in the winning pair.

Angels 3, Indians 2 at California (day game):
A wild throw on an attempted double play allowed Mickey Rivers to score from second base in the 11th inning to bring the Angels a 3-2 victory over the Indians. Rivers was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on an infield out. After an intentional pass to Bob Oliver, Ken McMullen grounded to Frank Duffy, who tossed to Jack Brohamer, forcing Oliver. However, when Brohamer threw wildly to first base, Rivers came across the plate with the winning run.

Twins 3, Tigers 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Rain that stopped play after six innings left the Twins in possession of a 3-1 victory over the Tigers. Jim Perry held the Tigers to four hits in the abbreviated contest. Rod Carew batted in two runs for the Twins with a pair of singles.

White Sox 2, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Wilbur Wood pitched a three-hitter and became a 10-game winner when Carlos May hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give the White Sox a 2-0 victory over the Yankees.

Orioles 5, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Mike Cuellar clinched his own decision with a two-run homer while pitching the Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Athletics. After the Orioles counted twice in the first inning, Davey Johnson walked in the second and Cuellar connected for the circuit. Sal Bando homered to account for the A's lone run.

Rangers 4, Brewers 0 at Texas (night game):
Yielding only three singles, Pete Broberg pitched the Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the Brewers and helped his own cause with a two-run double. Dalton Jones batted in the first two tallies with a bases-loaded single in the first inning. Broberg's double followed a pass to Larry Biittner and single by Toby Harrah in the fourth.

Braves 6, Mets 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron, who hit his 2,000th single earlier in the game, came to bat in the 10th inning and smashed the 650th homer of his career to give the Braves a 6-5 victory over the Mets. Felix Millan homered for the Braves in the second, but the Mets slugged their way to a 5-2 lead with circuit clouts by Tom Seaver, Duffy Dyer and Ken Boswell. However, in the eighth, Tommie Agee dropped a fly by Aaron, who scored on singles by Darrell Evans and Earl Williams. Dusty Baker then tripled to drive in the tying pair.

Padres 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
With Leron Lee leading the way, the Padres defeated the Cubs, 4-3. Lee homered with a man on base in the first inning, knocked in another run with a double in the third and set up what proved to be the deciding tally with a single in the seventh. Jerry Morales, who advanced to third on Lee's single, scored when Nate Colbert forced Lee. Billy Williams hit a two-run homer for the Cubs in the ninth inning.

[DH] Reds 8, Phillies 4 (night game) / Reds 4, Phillies 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
After falling behind by three runs at the outset, the Reds swept over the Phillies in a twi-night doubleheader, 8-4 and 4-2. The Phillies knocked out Jim McGlothlin while taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, but Tom Hall and Clay Carroll yielded only four hits between them the rest of the way. Denis Menke started the Reds on the way to victory with a two-run single in the second. Johnny Bench homered in the sixth to tie the score at 4-4. Menke then batted a run home with a triple in the seventh and scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Dave Concepcion as the Reds went ahead to stay. In the nightcap, George Foster homered for the Reds and Tony Perez batted in two runs with a triple. The Phillies' pair came on round-trippers by Greg Luzinski and Roger Freed in the eighth inning.

Expos 5, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Mike Torrez yielded only three hits and pitched the Expos to a 5-1 victory over the Astros. Mike Jorgensen helped clinch the victory by hitting a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The Astros got their run on a round-tripper by Jim Wynn.

Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
A theft of home by Manny Mota and run-scoring single by Bill Buckner enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Cardinals, 2-1. Mota, who singled in the sixth inning and reached third when Luis Melendez dropped a fly by Buckner, caught Scipio Spinks by surprise with his steal. Maury Wills singled in the eighth, Mota sacrificed and Buckner followed with his decisive single. Jim Brewer saved the game for Tommy John, but his string of retiring 24 straight batters in relief came to an end in the eighth when the Cardinals scored on a double by Lou Brock, infield out by Bernie Carbo and sacrifice fly by Donn Clendenon.
