Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 11, Royals 3 at Boston (night game):
Piling up 13 hits, the Red Sox gained an 11-3 victory over the Royals, who had won nine straight games at Fenway Park since losing there last on August 12, 1970. Danny Cater knocked in three runs with a homer and accounted for another RBI with an infield out to lead the Red Sox attack.
Angels 4, Indians 3 at California (night game):
Two-run homers by Bob Oliver and Leroy Stanton in the first inning enabled the Angels to defeat the Indians, 4-3. However, all four runs were unearned as a result of Alex Johnson dropping a fly ball by Sandy Alomar. After two out, Oliver smashed his homer off Milt Wilcox. Ken McMullen then singled and Stanton also hit for the circuit.
Tigers 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Harmon Killebrew hit the 522nd homer of his career, moving into sixth place ahead of Ted Williams on the all-time list, but the Twins lost to the Tigers, 3-2. Killebrew's clout, scoring Rod Carew ahead of him, put the Twins in front, 2-1, in the fourth inning. Mickey Lolich, who gained his 10th victory, singled in the fifth, moved up on a walk to Aurelio Rodriguez and scored the tying run on a single by Gates Brown, who also batted in the Tigers' first tally with a sacrifice fly. Ed Brinkman singled in the seventh. After a sacrifice by Lolich and single by Dick McAuliffe, Brinkman scored the winning run on a safe bunt by Rodriguez.
Yankees 3, White Sox 0 at New York (night game):
The White Sox, who had won six straight games, were stopped on their streak when they collected only four hits off Mike Kekich and Sparky Lyle and lost to the Yankees, 3-0. Johnny Callison and Bobby Murcer hit homers off Tom Bradley.
Orioles 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
A homer by Bobby Grich in the 10th inning gave the Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Athletics in a duel between Dave McNally and Catfish Hunter. The Orioles' first run was unearned on an error by Hunter, who dropped a throw covering first base in the third inning. The A's, who were held to four hits by McNally, scored only in the fourth when Joe Rudi doubled and Reggie Jackson and Sal Bando singled.
Rangers 7, Brewers 1 at Texas (night game):
A six-run outburst in the fourth inning carried the Rangers to a 7-1 victory over the Brewers behind the four-hit hurling of Rich Hand and Paul Lindblad. The Rangers had doubles by Ted Ford, Frank Howard and Tom Grieve, together with three singles, a walk and squeeze bunt by Hand in their big inning.
Mets 8, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
After blowing the two previous games, the Mets gained an 8-3 victory to salvage the finale of a series with the Braves. Willie Mays hit a single and double, scoring one run and driving in another for the Mets. Hank Aaron smashed his 651st homer for the Braves and Dusty Baker also hit for the circuit. The Braves, who had rallied in the eighth inning in the two previous games, threatened again in that same stanza, but they were checked by Tug McGraw, in relief of Jon Matlack, after Earl Williams drove in a run with a single. The Mets then iced their victory with four runs in the ninth. Cleon Jones batted in one with a single for his third hit and second RBI of the game and Duffy Dyer followed with a three-run homer.
Cubs 12, Padres 9 at Chicago (day game):
Coming back after Cito Gaston hit a grand-slam homer for the Padres, the Cubs exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to gain a 12-9 victory. Billy Williams and Jose Cardenal hit homers to help the Cubs to a 6-2 lead. After Curt Blefary and Larry Stahl singled off Fergie Jenkins in the sixth, a thunderstorm delayed the game for 33 minutes. When play resumed, Pat Corrales walked to load the bases and Gaston delivered his slam as a pinch-hitter for Enzo Hernandez. The Cubs struck back in their half with the tie-breaking run on singles by Don Kessinger and Williams and a double by Jim Hickman. Following a pass to Carmen Fanzone, Rick Monday batted in two runs with a double and Ron Santo climaxed the outburst with a three-run homer. Jenkins was the winner, but his string of 11 straight complete games came to an end when he was removed in the seventh inning.
Reds 2, Phillies 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench hit a sacrifice fly and homer to bat the Reds to a 2-1 victory over the Phillies. A walk to Joe Morgan and single by Bobby Tolan preceded Bench's fly in the first inning. His homer in the fourth proved decisive when the Phlllies picked up their run in the seventh on a double by Willie Montanez and single by Tommy Hutton.
Astros 5, Expos 4 at Houston (night game):
The Astros rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Expos, 5-4. Jim Wynn led off by drawing a pass and, after a single by Lee May, Bob Watson also walked to load the bases. Jimmy Stewart drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Following a wild pitch by Mike Marshall, Doug Rader singled for two runs to tie the score. Tommy Helms singled to keep the rally going and Bob Stinson capped it with the game-winning single.
Giants 3, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Sam McDowell yielded just five hits and pitched the Giants to a 3-1 victory to become only the second lefthander to beat the Pirates this season and first to do it in a route-going performance. Claude Osteen of the Dodgers also won over the Pirates previously but needed assistance. The Giants staked McDowell to a lead with two runs in the third inning on singles by Tito Fuentes, Bobby Bonds and Chris Speier and an error by Jose Pagan. McDowell pitched out of a jam in the fourth after giving up the Pirates' tally and the Giants then added an insurance run in the seventh on singles by Dave Rader and Garry Maddox and a sacrifice fly by Fuentes.
