Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] White Sox 5, Red Sox 4 (day game) / Red Sox 10, White Sox 8 at Boston (night game):
Wilbur Wood gained his 11th victory of the season when the White Sox won the first game of a day-night doubleheader, 5-4, but the Red Sox rallied to triumph in the second game, 10-8. Bill Melton homered with two men on base for the White Sox in the first inning of the sunshine contest, but Wood then fell behind, 4-3, but his teammates rallied to score two runs in the sixth. After Carlos May and Melton walked and Rick Reichardt singled to load the bases, Walt Williams drew a pass to force in May. Melton followed across the plate with the deciding run as Rich Morales rolled into a double play. In the night game, the White Sox exploded for six runs in the third inning, three scoring on a homer by Ed Herrmann, to take a 7-3 lead. The Red Sox cut the deficit and then gained their victory with three runs in the eighth. Duane Josephson batted in the tying tally with a triple and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Phil Gagliano. Carl Yastrzemski subsequently singled to drive in Gagliano for his fourth RBI of the game.
Tigers 3, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Tony Taylor drove in a run with a single in the ninth inning to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Angels. Mickey Stanley led off the inning with a single and Ed Brinkman sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Gates Brown, Taylor came through with his game-winning hit.
Royals 6, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Freddie Patek batted in two runs with a single and the Mayberry accounted for three with a homer as the Royals gained a 6-3 victory over the Brewers, who went down to their ninth straight defeat.
Orioles 4, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
The Orioles ran their winning streak to nine games with a 4-1 victory over the Twins behind the pitching of Pat Dobson, who also set up three runs with sacrifice bunts. On each occasion, Dobson's bunts advanced Mark Belanger, who reached base with a single in the third, walk in the fifth and double in the seventh.
[DH] Yankees 2, Rangers 0 (day game) / Yankees 3, Rangers 2 at New York (day game):
The terrific relief pitching of Sparky Lyle enabled the Yankees to complete a sweep of a doubleheader with the 3-2 victory over the Rangers after Steve Kline won the first game, 2-0. Bernie Allen, who hit a double and single, scored both Yankee runs in the lidlifter, crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Horace Clarke in the fourth inning and on a perfect squeeze bunt by Kline in the sixth. In the nightcap, John Ellis drove in the Yankees' deciding run with a single in the fifth inning. Mel Stottlemyre faltered in the ninth and was removed with runners on second and third and none out. Lyle issued an intentional pass to Frank Howard and then struck out the next three straight batters on a total of only 10 pitches.
A's 3, Indians 2 at Oakland (day game):
With a Helmet Day crowd of 28,934 on hand, Dave Hamilton gained his fourth straight victory when the Athletics defeated the Indians, 3-2. The A's scored all their runs off Gaylord Perry in the fourth inning. Joe Rudi was hit by a pitch and crossed the plate on a double by Reggie Jackson. After an intentional pass to Mike Epstein with one out, Angel Mangual drove in a run with a single and Dave Duncan followed with a double to plate what proved to be the winning marker.
Braves 3, Expos 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Saved from defeat by pinch-hitter Jim Breazeale in the ninth inning, the Braves scored a run in the 10th to defeat the Expos, 3-2. Tim McCarver hit his first homer since being acquired by the Expos in the first inning and another run scored when catcher's interference was called against Earl Williams with the bases loaded in the fourth. However, Breazeale came through for the Braves with a two-run homer in the ninth to tie the score. In the 10th, after a single by Ralph Garr and a passed ball, the Expos walked Hank Aaron intentionally, but the move failed when Rico Carty singled to drive in the Braves' winning run.
Cubs 7, Dodgers 2 at Chicago (day game):
Helped by three errors, the Cubs took a 4-0 lead against Al Downing on five hits in the first four innings and proceeded to defeat the Dodgers, 7-2. Jose Cardenal homered for the Cubs' first two runs in the second after Jim Hickman was safe on a fumble by Billy Grabarkewitz. Frank Robinson dropped a fly by Hicicman in the fourth. Ron Santo singled and when Willie Crawford booted the ball in left field, Hickman scored. Randy Hundley followed with a single to drive in Santo.
Reds 8, Mets 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Homers by Tony Perez, Denis Menke and Johnny Bench powered the Reds to an 8-2 victory over the Mets before an Old-Timers' Night crowd of 51,617.
Astros 10, Phillies 5 at Houston (night game):
Lee May and Larry Howard drove in three runs apiece and Jim Wynn hit a homer as the Astros batted their way to a 10-5 victory over the Phillies. After an intentional pass to Tommy Helms, Howard drove in two runs with a single.
Padres 4, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):

Cardinals 4, Giants 3 at St. Louis (day game):
Although Jerry Johnson allowed only one single in 2 2/3 innings of relief, that hit by Jose Cruz helped the Cardinals score in the 11th to defeat the Giants, 4-3. With one out, Dwain Anderson walked. Cruz then singled, sending Anderson to third. When Bobby Bonds threw to third, Cruz advanced to second. The Giants then walked Ed Crosby to load the bases. Lou Brock followed with a sacrifice fly.
