White Sox 8, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
The White Sox erupted for five runs in the fourth inning, three scoring on a homer by Rick Reichardt, to defeat the Red Sox, 8-4. Singles by Tom Egan, Stan Bahnsen and Walt Williams, together with an infield out by Carlos May, produced the first two runs of the outburst. After Dick Allen singled, Luis Tiant replaced John Curtis and on the reliever's second pitch, Reichardt smashed his homer.

Tigers 2, Angels 0 at California (day game):
Jim Northrup and Norm Cash hit homers to enable Mickey Lolich to pitch the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the Angels. Northrup's drive in the seventh inning was his first of the season and decided Lolich's duel with Nolan Ryan. Cash hit his homer off reliever Don Rose in the the ninth.

Brewers 3, Royals 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers snapped their nine-game losing streak when Skip Lockwood pitched a five-hitter and shut out the Royals, 3-0.

Twins 4, Orioles 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Stopped by a cutoff play, the Orioles' nine-game winning streak came to an end with a 4-3 loss to the Twins. Harmon Killebrew drove in two runs with a pair of singles to pace the Twins to a 4-1 lead before the Orioles began their rally with a run in the eighth on a pass to Johnny Oates, single by Boog Powell and double by Brooks Robinson with one out. With pinch-runners Chico Salmon and Dave Leonhard on base, Terry Crowley singled, scoring Salmon, Leonhard stopping at third. Crowley tried to take second, but Rich Reese cut off the throw from the outfield and fired to Danny Thompson, who tagged Crowley out. Davey Johnson then flied out to end the inning.

A's 9, Indians 0 at Oakland (day game):
Vida Blue, who had lost three decisions since ending his celebrated holdout, exhibited his 1971 form and pitched the Athletics to a 9-0 victory over the Indians. Mike Epstein homered in the second inning to start Blue on the way to his triumph, George Hendrick added a pair with a circuit clout in the fourth and the A's wrapped up their scoring with an outburst of six runs in the sixth.

Expos 2, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
Mike Torrez pitched a two-hitter and Ron Hunt scored both of the Expos' runs in a 2-1 victory over the Braves. Hunt doubled in the third inning and crossed the plate on a single by Mike Jorgensen. In the fifth, Hunt was hit by a pitch, Jorgensen singled again, Tim McCarver walked and Boots Day beat out an infield hit to score Hunt. The Braves' run came in the sixth on a triple by Felix Millan and sacrifice fly by Ralph Garr.

Cubs 5, Dodgers 4 at Chicago (day game):
A two-out single by Don Kessinger scored Ron Santo in the 11th inning and gave the Cubs a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. Homers by Frank Robinson and Billy Grabarkewitz, each with a man on base, accounted for the Dodgers' runs. Randy Hundley hit a two-run homer for the Cubs. In the 11th, Santo singled with one out and Hundley walked. Paul Popovich popped up, but Kessinger came through with his single to end the game.

Mets 2, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
Winning his own game with a homer, Tom Seaver pitched the Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Reds and turned in his first route-going performance since April 26. Seaver walked both Pete Rose and Joe Morgan in the first inning and gave up the Reds' run on a single by Tony Perez. Jim Fregosi singed and Duffy Dyer doubled to tie the score in the fourth. Seaver then helped himself with a homer off Ross Grimsley in the seventh.

Astros 10, Phillies 0 at Houston (day game):
After pitching eight hitless innings, Jerry Reuss yielded a double by Larry Bowa on his first delivery in the ninth for the only hit off the Astros' lefthander in a 10-0 victory over the Phillies. Bob Watson led the Astros' scoring in support of Reuss, driving in four runs with a pair of doubles, sacrifice fly and bases-loaded walk. Cesar Cedeno also contributed four hits, including a homer and two doubles.

Padres 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
With Steve Arlin pitching a two-hitter, the Padres gained a 1-0 victory for their second straight shutout of the Pirates. In the preceding night's game, Clay Kirby beat the Bucs, 4-0. The Padres' winning run for Arlin scored off Bruce Kison in the first inning when Jerry Morales doubled and completed his circuit of the bases on infield outs by Fred Stanley and Leron Lee.

Giants 8, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
The Giants erupted for seven runs in the last two innings and defeated the Cardinals, 8-2. Garry Maddox singled for a run to tie the score at 2-2 in the eighth and Ed Goodson delivered a pinch-single with the bases loaded, driving in two runs, to send the Giants ahead. Dave Kingman homered with a man on base in the ninth and Tito Fuentes drove in another pair with a triple to seal the Cardinals' defeat.
