Rangers 5, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Dalton Jones smashed a two-run homer in the fifth inning to send the Rangers on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Red Sox behind the strong pitching of Rich Hand. Don Mincher also batted in two runs with an infield out and single. Toby Harrah had three hits, drove in one run, stole three bases and scored twice. Tommy Harper homered for the Red Sox.
Orioles 4, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Jim Palmer posted his seventh straight victory and helped himself with a single that led to the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning as the Orioles defeated the Angels, 4-1. After hitting his single, Palmer advanced on a sacrifice by Don Buford and scored on a single by Johnny Oates. Singles by Bobby Grich and Brooks Robinson added another tally and the final run then scored on a wild pitch.
Brewers 7, White Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Lonborg scattered nine hits and gained a decision over Wilbur Wood when the Brewers defeated the White Sox, 7-1. The Brewers scored their first three runs off Wood before he was removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning. Two relievers yielded the Brewers' final four runs in the eighth. Ron Theobald, who scored three times, and Dave May each rapped three hits in the Brewers' attack.
[DH] Twins 7, Indians 3 (night game) / Twins 3, Indians 1 at Minnesota (night game):
With Jim Kaat and Dick Woodson each pitching a six-hitter, the Twins defeated the Indians in a twi-night doubleheader, 7-3 and 3-1. In the lidlifter, Phil Roof drove in two runs with a double in the second inning and scored himself on a single by Cesar Tovar to put the Twins ahead, 3-2. Harmon Killebrew homered in the third and, after a single by Tony Oliva and walk to Jim Nettles, Eric Soderholm also hit for the circuit to clinch the outcome. In the nightcap, the Twins scored all their runs in the second inning. Tovar drove in a pair with a single, stole second and scored himself on a single by Danny Thompson. John Lowenstein homered in the ninth to save the Indians from being shutout.
Yankees 4, Royals 2 at New York (night game):
Bobby Murcer drove in three runs with a homer and sacrifice fly to lead the Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Royals. Johnny Callison singled in the second inning, stole second and scored on a single by Thurman Munson for the Yankees' first run. Murcer hit his homer in the sixth and followed with his sacrifice fly in the seventh to account for the other markers.
A's 3, Tigers 2 at Oakland (night game):
Leading off in the 11th inning, Joe Rudi homered on the first pitch thrown to him by Chuck Seelbach to give the Athletics a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. The A's also had a round-tripper by George Hendrick in the third, but the Tigers took the lead with circuit clouts by Norm Cash and Al Kaline before the A's tied the score with an unearned run in the eighth on a walk to Angel Mangual, error by Cash and single by Bert Campaneris.
Cubs 15, Giants 8 at Chicago (day game):
Randy Hundley hit a grand-slam homer in the first inning as the Cubs exploded for seven runs en route to a 15-8 victory over the Giants. The Cubs scored their first three runs on three walks, two wild pitches and three singles before Hundley came up with the bases loaded and smashed his homer off Don Carrithers. After the Giants cut their deficit to 7-6 with the aid of a three-run homer by Garry Maddox in the third, the Cubs scored five times in the fourth, with Hundley hitting a single for his fifth RBI of the game. A homer by Ron Santo with a man on base in the sixth and a solo swat by Billy Williams in the seventh completed the Cubs' seventh straight victory.
Expos 7, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Scoring their first three runs on homers by Bob Bailey and Ron Fairly, the Expos defeated the Reds, 7-2. Bailey connected for the circuit in the third inning and Fairly sent the Expos ahead to stay with his round-tripper following a single by Tim McCarver in the fourth.
Astros 7, Mets 4 at Houston (night game):
After racking up three runs in the third inning, the Astros erupted for four more in the fifth and defeated the Mets, 7-4. In the third, Cesar Cedeno hit a sacrifice fly for the Astros' first marker and Bob Watson added a pair with a bases-loaded single. Lee May homered with a man on base in the fifth and two extra tallies followed on a walk to Doug Rader, double by Tommy Helms and single by Roger Metzger. John Milner and Ed Kranepool homered for the Mets.
Cardinals 5, Padres 4 at St. Louis (night game):
An error by Derrel Thomas with two out in the 10th inning enabled Lou Brock to score for the Cardinals to defeat the Padres, 5-4. The Cardinals picked up an earlier unearned run on an error by Jerry Morales in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead, but the Padres' center fielder made amends in the eighth by hitting a two-run homer to tie the game. In the 10th, Brock and Ted Sizemore singled with one away. After Donn Clendenon flied out, the runners advanced on a wild pitch by Gary Ross. Joe Torre then smashed a hot grounder that Thomas booted as the winning run scored.
