Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 10, Rangers 9 at Boston (day game):
Although Rico Petrocelli drove in six runs, including four with a grand slam, that was not enough for the Red Sox, who had to go 11 innings before defeating the Rangers, 10-9. In the 11th, Reggie Smith was hit by a pitch. John Kennedy bunted safely and both runners advanced on an error by Horacio Pina. After an intentional pass to Danny Cater loaded the bases, Doug Griffin ended the game with a run-scoring single.

Angels 6, Orioles 3 at California (night game):
A four-run rally in the seventh inning carried the Angels to a 6-3 victory over the Orioles. A homer by Merv Rettenmund helped the Orioles take a 3-2 lead before Mickey Rivers opened the seventh with a pinch-single. Sandy Alomar bunted and was safe on a error by Doyle Alexander. Ken Berry singled, driving in Rivers, to tie the score. The Orioles then walked Vada Pinson intentionally to load the bases, but the strategy failed when Bob Oliver singled to send in two runs. John Stephenson followed with a single for the final tally.

White Sox 9, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The White Sox exploded for eight runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Brewers, 9-3. A single by Ed Herrmann with the bases loaded drove in the first two runs to tie the score at 3-3. Luis Alvarado followed with a single to send the White Sox ahead and, before the inning ended, five more runs scored on singles by Jim Lyttle and Pat Kelly, a pass to Carlos May and single by Dick Allen.

Indians 4, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Backed by two homers and a triple, Gaylord Perry pitched the Indians to a 4-2 victory over the Twins. A homer by Ray Fosse, triple by Frank Duffy and sacrifice fly by Del Unser gave the Indians two runs in the second inning and their decisive pair followed in the eighth when Chris Chambliss walked and Graig Nettles hit for the circuit.

Tigers 5, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Tom Timmerman pitched a five-hitter and was rewarded with a victory when the Tigers defeated the Athletics, 5-2. Bill Freehan provided the deciding blow for his batterymate, driving in two runs with a bases-loaded double in the eighth inning. Timmerman singled, Tony Taylor doubled and Al Kaline was handed an intentional pass ahead of Freehan's two-bagger. When Reggie Jackson bobbled the ball, an extra run scored.

Phillies 9, Braves 7 at Atlanta (night game):
Mike Ryan, who entered the game as a substitute catcher, came to bat with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and drove in two runs with a double to give the Phillies a 9-7 victory over the Braves. Felix Millan had four hits and scored four runs for the Braves, who also had a homer by Orlando Cepeda. Willie Montanez, John Bateman and Roger Freed rapped round-trippers for the Phillies. In the ninth, the Phillies loaded the bases on three walks issued by Cecil Upshaw before Ryan hit his double to snap the Phillies' six-game losing streak.

Giants 4, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Held to two hits by Ron Bryant, the Cubs lost to the Giants, 4-0, and came to the end of their seven-game winning streak. Ken Henderson hit a single and double, drove in two runs and scored one to lead the Giants at bat.

Reds 6, Expos 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pete Rose batted in two runs with a triple and Tony Perez drove in a pair with a single to lead the Reds to a 6-4 victory over the Expos, who failed to hold a 3-0 lead. Rose's triple in the second inning followed passes to Dave Concepcion and Gary Nolan. The Reds loaded the bases in the fifth and, after Perez hit his single, another run scored on a sacrifice fly by George Foster. Nolan doubled and Joe Morgan singled for the Reds' final tally in the sixth.

Mets 5, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
Hitless in 20 trips, Tommie Agee snapped his slump with a double in the eighth inning to spark the Mets to a 5-4 victory over the Astros. After his double with the score tied, 3-3, Agee stopped at third on a single by Ken Boswell and crossed the plate on a grounder by Dave Marshall, who was safe at first when Tommy Helms fumbled the ball. John Milner then singled, driving in Boswell with what proved to be the deciding run. Marshall had a homer earlier in the game for the Mets, while Doug Rader accounted for the Astros' last run with a circuit clout in the ninth.

Dodgers 5, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Breaking a tie in the 10th inning, the Dodgers scored two runs on a pinch-single by Jim Lefebvre and defeated the Pirates, 5-3. Frank Robinson and Wes Parker singled with one out in the overtime frame and moved up on a grounder by Duke Sims before Lefebvre batted for Steve Garvey and delivered his decisive hit.

Cardinals 14, Padres 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Bob Gibson passed Jess Haines as the biggest winner in Cardinals' history and posted the 211th victory of his career with an easy 14-3 triumph over the Padres. The first four Cardinal batters gave Gibson enough runs to win when Lou Brock singled and stole second, Ed Crosby and Matty Alou singled and Joe Torre homered. Before leaving the game after seven innings, Gibson joined in the batting spree with a three-run homer.
