Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 4, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Hot-hitting Bernie Allen and Bobby Murcer batted the Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Indians behind the six-hit pitching of Fritz Peterson. Allen, batting at a .400 clip in his last 13 games, homered with a man on base in the third inning. Murcer, hitting .417 for the month of June, drove in a run with a triple in the fifth and scored himself on a single by Roy White.

Royals 5, Twins 0 at Kansas City (night game):
While Paul Spilttorff pitched a seven-hit shutout, John Mayberry drove in four runs to lead the Royals to a 5-0 victory over the Twins. Mayberry singled for a run in the sixth inning and homered with two men on base in the eighth.

Brewers 8, Red Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Ken Brett held his former teammates to three hits in eight innings and was an easy winner when the Brewers defeated the Red Sox, 8-1. Ken Sanders pitched the final frame. Rick Auerbach drove in the Brewers' first two runs with a double and single and then accounted for another RBI with a single when the Brewers erupted for six runs in the fifth inning.

Angels 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Bob Oliver homered with two out in the ninth inning to give the Angels a 2-1 victory over the Athletics in a duel between Nolan Ryan and Dave Hamilton. Ryan yielded only two hits, with the A's run coming on a homer by Reggie Jackson in the first. While Ryan deserved the victory, the defeat nevertheless was a tough one for Hamilton. The Angels' first run in the third was unearned and Oliver's homer in the ninth was the first given up by the A's young southpaw in 36 innings this season.

Rangers 4, White Sox 3 at Texas (night game):
After getting their first three runs on two homers, the Rangers scored on two walks and a single by Dick Billings in the eighth inning to defeat the White Sox, 4-3. Frank Howard homered for the Rangers' first run in the fourth and Ted Ford connected with a man on base for two more in the sixth.

Pirates 4, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
A triple by Roberto Clemente, who drove in two runs in the fourth inning, started the Pirates off to a 4-2 victory over the Cubs. Clemente's triple followed a single by Dave Cash and double by Vic Davalillo. Clemente then scored himself on a single by Al Oliver. A walk to Willie Stargell, a wild pitch and single by Manny Sanguillen added the Bucs' last run in the eighth. Dave Giusti saved the game for Steve Blass, relieving with a man on base and one out in the ninth and inducing Ron Santo to hit into a double play.

Reds 7, Astros 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning and that was more than enough for Ross Grirnsley, who pitched the Reds to a 7-1 victory over the Astros. Bench's blow off Jerry Reuss came after passes to Pete Rose and Joe Morgan.

Dodgers 2, Braves 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A Ball Night crowd of 53,107, the Dodgers' largest turnout of the season, saw Frank Robinson smash a two-run homer in the sixth inning to defeat the Braves, 2-1. Robinson's drive, following a double by Willie Davis, was the 513th of his career and moved the veteran slugger into sole possession of eighth place on the majors' all-time list ahead of Eddie Mathews and Ernie Banks. Al Downing, who outdueled Phil Niekro, was in serious trouble in the seventh when the Braves loaded the bases on three singles, but only one run scored when Rico Carty rolled into a double play and Orlando Cepeda was retired.

Expos 2, Phillies 1 at Montreal (night game):
A two-run rally in the eighth inning brought the Expos a 2-1 victory over the Phillies. Oscar Gamble had four of the Phillies' nine hits off Mike Torrez and drove in their only run with a single in the eighth. In the Expos' half, Ron Hunt singled and when Mike Jorgensen bunted, both runners were safe on an error by Terry Harmon. Following an intentional pass to Tim McCarver, Ron Fairly singled to drive in the tying run and Ron Woods hit a sacrifice fly to plate the winning tally.

Padres 4, Giants 1 at San Diego (night game):
Following up a two-hitter against the Pirates in his previous start, Steve Arlin allowed only one hit and pitched the Padres to a 4-1 victory over the Giants. Garry Maddox tripled in the second inning for the lone blow off Arlin and scored on a sacrifice fly by Al Gallagher. The Padres, after tying the count against Sam McDowell in the fifth, won the game in the eighth when Fred Stanley singled, Leron Lee beat out a bunt and Nate Colbert smashed a three-run homer.
