Orioles 2, Tigers 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Terry Crowley scored one run and drove in another to help the Orioles defeat the Tigers, 2-1, for Jim Palmer's eighth straight victory and 10th of the season. Gates Brown homered for the Tigers' run in the first inning. Don Buford singled in the Orioles' half, moved up on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Crowley. In the sixth, Crowley doubled and scored the deciding run when Brooks Robinson followed with a single.

[DH] Indians 4, Yankees 3 (day game) / Indians 5, Yankees 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Gaylord Perry picked up his 12th victory of season and Mike Kilkenny won his first game of the year as the Indians defeated the Yankees in a doubleheader, 4-3 and 5-1. The Indians beat Mel Stottlemyre in the opener, breaking a 1-1 tie with three runs in the eighth inning on a walk to Graig Nettles, single by Tommy McCraw and doubles by Ray Fosse and John Lowenstein. The Yankees rallied for two runs in the ninth, but Ed Farmer replaced Perry and retired the last two batters to save the game. Kilkenny, pitching for his fourth major league club this season, limited the Yankees to five hits in the nightcap. The Indians sent their new acquisition on his way to victory by scoring three runs in the first nning, two crossing the plate on a bases-loaded single by Jerry Moses.

[DH] Twins 5, Royals 3 (day game) / Royals 8, Twins 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Paced by Harmon Killebrew, who hit a three-run homer, the Twins won the first game of a doubleheader, 5-3, in a split with the Royals, who exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to capture the second game, 8-3. Bert Blyleven, who ended his personal five-game losing streak with the Twins' victory in the opener, was lifted with the bases loaded in the ninth and the Royals scored three runs on a single by Cookie Rojas and sacrifice fly by Carl Taylor before Freddie Patek grounded into a double play. In the nightcap, Lou Piniella drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double to start the Royals' big inning. After a pass to Ed Kirkpatrick and single by Richie Scheinblum, scoring Piniella, John Mayberry capped the outburst with a homer.

[DH] Red Sox 8, Brewers 1 (day game) / Brewers 2, Red Sox 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers collected only six hits off Marty Pattin, their former teammate, and lost the opener of a doubleheader, 8-1, but Earl Stephenson and Ken Sanders combined to shut out the Red Sox in the nightcap, 2-0. The Red Sox took a 3-1 lead in the lidlifter with two unearned runs in the fourth inning and wrapped up the decision with a five-run outburst in the seventh, three scoring on a homer by Reggie Smith. Stephenson, making his first major league start, was the winner of the second game with help from Sanders, who pitched the last two innings. Lynn McGlothen, making his major league debut with the Red Sox, was the loser. Johnny Briggs doubled for the Brewers in the seventh, took third after a long fly by Dave May and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Lahoud. Singles by Brock Davis, George Scott and May added a run in the eighth.

[DH] A's 6, Angels 1 (day game) / A's 6, Angels 0 at Oakland (night game):
The Athletics swept a doubleheader for the fifth straight time this season by defeating the Angels, 6-1 and 6-0. The Angels' only run of the day was unearned off Catfish Hunter, who pitched a three-hitter in the opener. Blue Moon Odom was the winner of the nightcap with help from Darold Knowles, who saved the shutout after relieving with two men on base in the ninth inning. Sal Bando homered with two men on base in the second and the A's wrapped up their scoring with three more runs in the third, two counting on a homer by Dave Duncan.

White Sox 10, Rangers 5 at Texas (day game):
With a grand-slam homer by Carlos May as the big blow, the White Sox scored seven runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Rangers, 10-5. Two walks and an error loaded the bases for the White Sox to start their outburst. Dick Allen drew a pass to force in one run, leaving the sacks still filled for May's slam. Before the inning ended, the White Sox went on to add two more runs on a walk and three hits.

Pirates 9, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Manny Sanguillen hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career to spark the Pirates to a 9-2 victory over the Cubs. The Pirates were losing, 2-1, with two out in the eighth inning when Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell singled to chase Burt Hooton. Dan McGinn walked Al Oliver to load the bases and after Tom Phoebus took over for the Cubs, Sanguillen smashed his grand slam. The Pirates added four more runs in the ninth to clinch the victory for Dock Ellis.

Reds 5, Astros 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
Tony Perez singled in the 10th inning and scored on a double by Denis Menke to give the Reds a 5-4 victory over the Astros. Tommy Helms homered with two men on base in the fourth inning to put the Astros ahead, 3-1, but Menke got one run back for the Reds with a circuit clout in their half. After Cesar Cedeno doubled and Jim Wynn singled for another Astro run in the fifth, the Reds tied the score in the seventh when Pete Rose singled and Joe Morgan homered.

Dodgers 5, Braves 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Tommy John and Pete Mikkelsen combined to pitch the Dodgers to a 5-0 victory over the Braves. Mikkelsen relieved after Mike Lum and Marty Perez singled off John with none out in the eighth inning and put down the Braves' threat. Bill Russell drove in two of the Dodgers' runs with a sacrifice fly and single. Chris Cannizzarro plated a pair with a single and Manny Mota accounted for the other run with a homer.

Phillies 1, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
A homer by John Bateman against his former teammates enabled Steve Carlton to pitch the Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Expos. The game was marked by a brawl in the fourth inning after Carlton hit Tim Foli in the head with a pitched ball. Bateman hit his homer in the fifth. When Carlton, next at bat, was brushed back by a pitch thrown by Ernie McAnally, the umpires threw the Expos' starter out of the game.

[DH] Cardinals 7, Mets 1 (day game) / Cardinals 2, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
Scipio Spinks and Rick Wise pitched the Cardinals to a sweep of a doubleheader with the Mets. Spinks, who struck out 13, allowed six hits in the opener. Wise hurled a four-hitter in the nightcap and was the winner when the Cardinals broke a 1-1 tie in the ninth inning on a double by Ted Simmons, sacrifice by Jose Cruz and two-out infield hit by Donn Clendenon.

Giants 6, Padres 5 at San Diego (day game):
Garry Maddox, who doubled in the 14th inning, raced home from second on an infield out by Ed Goodson to bring the Giants a 6-5 victory over the Padres. First baseman Nate Colbert, who took the throw on Goodson's grounder, heaved home to Pat Corrales, but Maddox rammed into the Padres' catcher and knocked the ball out of his glove. Jim Barr, making his first start for the Giants after 41 relief appearances, was lifted in the sixth with the score tied, 3-3. The Giants went ahead with two runs in the ninth, but the Padres forced the game into overtime in their half when Jerry Morales singled and Garry Jestadt tied the score with a homer off Randy Moffitt.
