Today's scores and summaries:
Brewers 6, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Johnny Briggs tied the score with a three-run homer in the sixth inning and then drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth to lead the Brewers to a 6-4 victory over the Orioles. The Brewers fell behind, 4-1, in the fifth when the Orioles scored three times, including a theft of home by Mark Belanger in a double steal with Merv Rettenmund. Briggs' homer in the sixth came after Joe Lahoud singled and George Scott was safe on an error. In the eighth, Scott doubled and crossed the plate on a single by Briggs, who also came around to count an insurance run on a single by Dave May and sacrifice fly by Ellie Rodriguez.
Red Sox 8, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
A seven-run explosion in the fourth inning propelled the Red Sox to an 8-2 victory over the Indians behind the three-hit pitching of John Curtis. The Red Sox rookie got off to a shaky start in the first inning, giving up two walks, two hits and two runs on a bases-loaded single by Ron Lolich. The Red Sox began their outburst in the fourth with three runs on a walk to Carl Yastrzemski, single by Rico Petrocelli and homer by Bob Burda. A total of 13 batters went to the plate before the inning ended. Carlton Fisk accounted for one run with a single, Tommy Harper drove in another with a sacrifice fly and Doug Griffin singled for the last two tallies.
Tigers 5, Yankees 2 at Detroit (night game):
Three consecutive homers in the first inning powered the Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. Wade Blasingame, making his A. L. debut with the Yankees, walked Tony Taylor and then was the target for round-trippers by Aurelio Rodriguez, Al Kaline and Willie Horton before being removed. Mickey Lolich, pitching with two days of rest for the first time this season, posted his 12th victory. Bobby Murcer homered for one of the Yankees' runs.
Royals 6, White Sox 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Continuing his slugging spree, John Mayberry smashed a homer, double and two singles to lead the Royals to a 6-4 victory over the White Sox. Mayberry doubled and scored in the second inning, singled a run across in the fourth and homered in the sixth to bring his RBI total to 20 in the Royals' last 11 games. Richie Scheinblum also hit a homer for the Royals.
Angels 3, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins were the victims of a triple play on poor baserunning by Harmon Killebrew and Steve Braun while losing to the Angels, 3-1. After Killebrew singled and Braun doubled in the fourth inning, Jim Nettles flied to Jim Spencer in left field. Killebrew faked a dash for the plate and Braun started from second. Ken McMullen took Spencer's throw to third and fired to Sandy Alomar, who tagged Braun out. Alomar then pegged to Leo Cardenas, covering third, and Killebrew was caught off the bag for the third out. Nolan Ryan pitched a six-hitter for the Angels and also helped at bat, smashing a triple in the seventh inning and scoring on a single by Alomar to break a 1-1 tie.
A's 9, Rangers 3 at Texas (day game):
Dave Hamilton doubled for his first major league hit and Rollie Fingers homered for his first hit of the season to go along with their pitching as the Athletics defeated the Rangers, 9-3. With the score tied, 1-1, Hamilton doubled in the sixth inning, Joe Rudi walked and Reggie Jackson was safe on an error. After Blue Moon Odom came in to run for Hamilton, Sal Bando drove in two runs with a single. Fingers, who then replaced Hamilton on the mound, smashed his homer with a man on base in the seventh. The game started at 5 p.m. in 103-degree heat and drew only 3,884, the smallest crowd since the former Senators moved to Texas this year.
[DH] Cubs 6, Phillies 3 (day game) / Phillies 7, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Mike Ryan drove in four runs with a homer, double and single to pace the Phillies to a 7-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader after the Cubs won the first game, 6-3, behind the pitching of Fergie Jenkins. The Cubs scored twice in the fifth inning of the lidlifter on a triple by Ron Santo, double by J.C. Martin and triple by Bill North. They picked up three unearned runs in the sixth, one scoring on a single by Jenkins, who also accounted for another RBI with a single in the eighth. Don Money homered with two men on base for the Phillies' counters. Ryan hit a two-run homer in the second inning of the nightcap, knocked in a run with a single in the fifth and added his other RBI with a double in the seventh.
Reds 5, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers' infield fell apart defensively with five errors resulting in three unearned runs and enabling the Reds to gain a 5-4 victory. Two of the Reds' runs were forced home on passes with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, one issued by Al Downing to Pete Rose and other by Pete Richert to Joe Morgan. Don Gullett, who pitched seven innings, was the Reds' winner in his first start since May 2 after pitching in several games in relief since recovering from an attack of hepatitis.
Mets 7, Pirates 4 at New York (day game):
After driving in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the first inning, Jim Fregosi accounted for three more RBIs with a homer in the seventh to carry the Mets to a 7-4 victory over the Pirates. The Pirates tied the score at 2-2 in the second on a homer by Richie Hebner and went ahead, 4-2, on a circuit clout by Al Oliver in the fourth and his sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Mets pulled even in their half of the sixth with a walk to Cleon Jones, singles by Ted Martinez and Jerry Grote and a passed ball. John Milner tripled in the seventh and Jones was passed intentionally to set the stage for Fregosi's winning homer.
Astros 6, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Dave Roberts limited his former teammates to six hits and pitched the Astros to a 6-0 victory over the Padres. The Astros backed Roberts with a 15-hit attack, including a triple and two singles by Bob Watson.
Giants 3, Braves 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Bobby Bonds, who had only one hit in his last 29 times at bat and none in his last 18 trips, smashed a homer in the 10th inning to lift the Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Braves. Chris Speier homered in the fourth and singled, stole second and scored the Giants' other run on a double by Dave Kingman in the eighth. The Braves, after counting on a triple by Mike Lum and single by Marty Perez in the sixth, tied the game in the ninth on a walk to Orlando Cepeda, a wild pitch and single by Felix Millan that drove in pinch-runner Sonny Jackson.
[DH] Cardinals 4, Expos 3 (night game) / Expos 11, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals extended their winning streak to seven games with a 4-3 victory in the 11-inning opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but the string was snapped by the Expos in the nightcap, 11-3. The Cardinals loaded the bases in the 11th on a walk to Bernie Carbo, single by Dwain Anderson and pass to Luis Melendez. The Expos then stacked their infield, with three defenders on the right side of the diamond, but Lou Brock lashed a drive down the first base line past Mike Jorgensen for a single to score pinch-runner Scipio Spinks. In the nightcap, Mike Torrez defeated his former teammates, breezing to victory after the Expos scored four runs in the fourth inning off John Cumberland, who made his first start for the Cardinals after coming from the Giants. Ron Woods hit a sacrifice fly for the first run to tie the score at 1-1 and Bob Bailey then shattered the deadlock with a three-run homer.
