Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Brewers 4 at Boston (day game):
Ben Oglivie belted two homers and Marty Pattin hit the first of his major league career to lead the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Brewers, who were stopped on their club record winning streak of six games. Oglivie connected with a man on base in the first inning to tie the score at 2-2. Pattin came to bat after a single by Carlton Fisk in the second and hit his homer to put the Red Sox ahead. Oglivie added to the lead with his second round-tripper of the game in the third.

Angels 5, A's 3 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan struck out 16, allowed only five hits and pitched the Angels to a 5-3 victory over the Athletics with the aid of homers by Ken Berry and Leo Cardenas. Ryan drove in a run with a single in the third inning to tie the score at 1-1. Berry broke the deadlock with his circuit clout to open the third. Cardenas then came up with two men on base and two out and smashed the winning homer.

White Sox 5, Twins 1 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox erupted for four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Twins, 5-1, and enabled Dave Lemonds to gain his first major league victory. Harmon Killebrew homered for the Twins' run in the seventh to tie the score at 1-1. Carlos May walked to open the eighth for the White Sox and Rick Reichardt singled. Mike Andrews struck out, but Ed Herrmann singled to drive in the tie-breaking tally. Rich Morales followed with a single for another run. After Jay Johnstone, batting for Lemonds, moved the runners up with a grounder, Pat Kelly singled to score Herrmann and Morales.

Tigers 2, Orioles 0 at Detroit (day game):
A dramatic catch by Jim Northrup, who robbed Davey Johnson of a homer with a man on base in the ninth inning, enabled Mickey Lolich to gain his 13th victory as the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 2-0. Al Kaline homered for the Tigers' first run off Dave McNally in the sixth inning and a walk, single by Bill Freehan and an error added the other tally off Doyle Alexander in the eighth. With one out in the ninth, Brooks Robinson drew the only pass issued by Lolich. Northrup then leaped against the fence to pull down Johnson's bid for a homer and completed the double play with his throw to Ed Brinkman and relay to Paul Jata.

Royals 3, Rangers 2 at Kansas City (day game):
Coming through as a pinch-hitter, Gail Hopkins drove in a run with a single in the 11th inning to give the Royals a 3-2 victory over the Rangers. John Mayberry drew a pass to open the 11th and Jerry May sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Bobby Knoop, Hopkins batted for Paul Schaal and delivered his winning hit.

Yankees 5, Indians 1 at New York (day game):
After 14 unsuccessful tries, Mike Kekich posted his first complete game of the season and pitched the Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Indians. Graig Nettles homered for the Indians' run in the second inning, but the Yankees tied the score in their half and then took command with three runs in the fifth on a double by Horace Clarke, singles by Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer, a long fly by Roy White on which the runners advanced and a double by Felipe Alou.

Astros 4, Braves 2 at Houston (night game):
Doug Rader drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning to provide the Astros with their winning margin in a 4-2 victory over the Braves. A homer by Lee May, double by Bob Watson, a groundout and sacrifice fly by Johnny Edwards produced the Astros' initial pair in the second. Rader hit his single after the Astros had loaded the bases on a single by Cesar Cedeno and passes to May and Watson.

Mets 2, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
Posting his first shutout since May 16, 1970, Jerry Koosman pitched the Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Expos. The complete game was the first for Koosman since last August 25, but the lefthander yielded only four hits and gained his sixth straight victory. Dave Marshall batted in both runs with a single in the third inning and homer in the fifth.

[DH] Cardinals 6, Phillies 4 (night game) / Cardinals 1, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Bob Gibson gained his seventh straight victory in the opener and Donn Clendenon homered for the only run in the nightcap as the Cardinals beat the Phillies in a twi-night doubleheader, 6-4 and 1-0. The sweep extended the Cardinals' winning streak to five games and gave them a record of 12 victories in their last 13 outings. In the lidlifter, Gibson led the Cardinals batters with three hits and drove in one run. Ted Simmons backed his pitcher with a homer and triple. Willie Montanez had a homer for the Phillles, but struck out with the potential tying run on base in the ninth inning of the nightcap.

Pirates 4, Cubs 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Roberto Clemente, who had not hit more than one homer in any game since August 13, 1969, smashed two for the circuit, his second drive coming after a pinch-single by Milt May in the ninth inning to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Clemente connected for his first homer in the seventh. Willie Stargell followed with a single and gave way on the paths to Gene Clines, who stole second, moved to third after a fly by Al Oliver and scored on a sacrifice fly by Manny Sanguillen. Billy Williams, who doubled to drive in the Cubs' first run in the third inning, accounted for their other pair with a homer in the eighth, but Fergie Jenkins gave up May's single in the ninth and then was the victim of Clemente's second homer.

Reds 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
With Joe Morgan having a hand in all their scoring, the Reds defeated the Padres, 3-2, with the victory going to Ed Sprague in his first start of the season. Morgan walked and scored in the first inning and homered with a man on base in the third.

Giants 8, Dodgers 5 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants, who hit three homers against the Dodgers in the preceding night's game, smashed three more for the circuit and powered their way to an 8-5 victory. Dave Kingman began the slugging with a three-run smash in the first inning. Willie McCovey and Dave Rader homered in the fifth, Rader's blow coming with a man on base, to add three more runs. Steve Garvey hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers in the first. Randy Moffitt, the brother of tennis star Billie Jean King, received credit for his first major league victory after taking over for Sam McDowell with the bases loaded and none out in the fifth.
