Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Twins 0 at Boston (night game):
Lynn McGlothen and Juan Beniquez each achieved a "first" for his major league career as the Red Sox defeated the Twins, 2-0. McGlothen, who pitched a three-hitter, posted his first major league victory and Beniquez hit his first major league homer in the sixth inning.

Brewers 4, Angels 2 at California (night game):
With a helping hand from Frank Linzy, who relieved in the ninth inning, Jim Lonborg gained his fifth straight victory when the Brewers defeated the Angels, 4-2. The Brewers scored two runs off Lloyd Allen in the first inning and picked up their deciding pair in the ninth on two passes with the bases loaded, one issued by Rickey Clark to Ron Theobald and other by Mel Queen to Joe Lahoud. In the Angels' half, Andy Kosco singled and Bob Oliver homered, breaking the California string of 23 scoreless innings before Linzy took over to save the game for Lonborg.

Orioles 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
After giving up a homer by Dick Allen in the first inning, Pat Dobson allowed only two other hits and pitched the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the White Sox. The Orioles tied the score on a single by Bobby Grich and triple by Davey Johnson in the fifth and pushed over the winning run with consecutive singles by Paul Blair, Boog Powell and Merv Rettenmund in the sixth.

Indians 2, Rangers 0 at Cleveland (day game):
The tremendous relief pitching of Dick Tidrow together with a two-run homer by John Lowenstein, enabled the Indians to snap their eight-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Rangers. Mike Kilkenny, who started for the Indians, struck out five of the first six batters he faced before walking Larry Biittner to open the third inning. Ted Kubiak then hit a hot smash to Kilkenny, who started a double play. However, the ball hit Kilkenny on the throwing hand and fractured his index finger, forcing him to surrender the mound to Tidrow.

Royals 1, Tigers 0 at Kansas City (night game):
The first shutout of Roger Nelson's major league career saw the Royals' righthander pitch a four-hitter and defeat the Tigers, 1-0. The Royals decided the outcome of Nelson's duel with Bill Slayback by scoring in the first inning. Amos Otis beat out a bunt and stole second with two out. After Richie Scheinblum walked, John Mayberry bounced an infield hit off Slayback's glove. Scrambling after the ball, Slayback then threw wildly to first, allowing Otis to score. However, the run was earned because Ed Kirkpatrick, the next batter, drew a walk which would have forced in the run before Cookie Rojas flied out.

A's 4, Yankees 2 at Oakland (night game):
Sal Bando provided the big noise for a Fireworks Show crowd of 37,761 by hitting a grand-slam homer to propel the Athletics to a 4-2 victory over the Yankees. Mel Stottlemyre, pitching for the Yankees, retired the first 10 batters before Joe Rudi doubled. An intentional pass to Mike Epstein with two out and another walk to Bill Voss then loaded the bases for the fifth grand slam of Bando's major league career.

[DH] Braves 5, Cubs 1 (night game) / Cubs 3, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Denny McLain, making his N. L. debut in an Atlanta uniform, wound up with no decision when the second game of a twi-night doubleheader between the Braves and Cubs was stopped by rain in the top half of the eighth inning with the score tied, 3-3. The Braves won the first game, 5-1, by exploding for four runs in the seventh inning. Paul Casanova sparked the outburst with his first N. L. homer to break a 1-1 tie and Mike Lum capped the scoring with a three-run wallop. The holiday crowd of 50,597, fourth largest in Atlanta's history, gave McLain a standing ovation when he took the mound in the nightcap. The former A. L. Cy Young Award winner gave up nine hits, including a homer by Jose Cardenal. The Cubs had two men on base with none out in the eighth when the umpires were forced to call the game off.

Reds 6, Cardinals 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Cardinals, whose seven-game winning streak was stopped by the Reds, 6-1, also lost the services of Scipio Spinks for the balance of the season. The rookie pitcher singled in the third inning and scored on a double by Luis Melendez, but tore ligaments in his right knee in a home-plate collision with Johnny Bench. The Reds scored five of their runs off Spinks in the second inning. After a single by Tony Perez, pass to Joe Hague and infield hit by Denis Menke loaded the bases, Dave Concepcion and Joe Morgan both walked to force in the first two runs and Pete Rose followed with a double to clear the bases.

Astros 6, Pirates 0 at Houston (night game):
Posting his fifth shutout of the season, Larry Dierker pitched the Astros to a 6-0 victory over the Pirates. Dierker also drove in a run with a squeeze bunt in the sixth inning and another with a single in the seventh.

Expos 7, Dodgers 3 at Montreal (night game):
A two-run single by Bob Bailey, triple by Carl Morton and homers by Ron Woods and Ron Fairly paced the Expos to a 7-3 victory over the Dodgers. After hitting his single in the second inning, Bailey scored on Morton's triple. Woods homered in the third and Fairly followed suit in the fourth. Morton gave up a two-run homer by Willie Davis in the sixth and a solo swat by Duke Sims in the seventh before Mike Marshall took over in relief.

[DH] Mets 2, Padres 0 (day game) / Padres 4, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
Tom Seaver pitched the fourth one-hitter of his major league career as the Mets won the opener of a doubleheader, 2-0, but the Padres came back to gain a split with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap. Seaver held the Padres hitless until Leron Lee singled with one out in the ninth inning. The Mets' ace bore down to preserve his victory by inducing Nate Colbert to ground into a double play. The Mets scored both their runs in the third inning on the wildness of Clay Kirby. Bud Harrelson singled with two out and Kirby then walked Wayne Garrett, John Milner, Jim Fregosi and Ed Kranepool in succession. In the nightcap, after Colbert homered in the eighth to tie the score at 2-2, the Padres opened the ninth with safe bunts by Johnny Jeter and Fred Kendall. Enzo Hernandez also bunted, but forced Jeter. Cito Gaston popped up, but Derrel Thomas laced a single for his third hit of the game to drive in the tie-breaking run and an extra tally followed across the plate when Milner bobbled Thomas' hit in right field.

Giants 2, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Giants rewarded Jim Barr for his three-hit pitching by rallying for two runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Phillies, 2-1. The only run off Barr was unearned on an error by Al Gallagher in the fourth. Dave Kingman doubled to open the seventh and scored the tying run on a single by Dave Rader, who took second on the throw to the plate. Rader advanced to the third after a long fly to center field by Gallagher and scored the deciding run on a sacrifice fly by Tito Fuentes.
