Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Twins 0 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox pitching staff boasted a string of five straight complete games and two successive shutouts when Marty Pattin scattered five hits and beat the Twins, 2-0. Lynn McGlothen also had blanked the Twins, 2-0, in the previous day's game. Jim Perry, who opposed Pattin, helped beat himself with a wild pitch after a double by Carlton Fisk in the second inning. Bob Burda scored Fisk with a sacrifice fly. The other runs counted off Dave LaRoche in the eighth when Tommy Harper was hit by a pitch, stole second and came home on a double by Carl Yastrzemski.

Angels 1, Brewers 0 at California (night game):
Winston Llenas, pinch-hitting for Nolan Ryan in the ninth inning, brought victory to the Angels' pitcher by driving in a run with a two-out single to beat the Brewers, 1-0. Earl Stephenson, who drew his first major league defeat, gave up a single by Ken McMullen to open the ninth. Leo Cardenas sacrificed pinch-runner Syd O'Brien to second. After an intentional pass to Leroy Stanton, Jeff Torborg flied out before Llenas batted for Ryan.

Orioles 1, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
A homer by Brooks Robinson in the second inning gave the Orioles a 1-0 victory over the White Sox in a duel between Dave McNally and Wilbur Wood.

Royals 8, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
With Paul Spllttorff pitching a three-hitter, the Royals gained one of their rare victories over Mickey Lolich, knocking out the veteran lefthander in the sixth inning and defeating the Tigers, 8-2. Lolich had beaten the Royals eight times, including twice earlier this season, and had lost to them only once previously. Freddie Patek hit a double and single off Lolich, scored two runs and drove in one.

Yankees 4, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Felipe Alou and Thurman Munson batted in two runs apiece to enable Steve Kline to pitch the Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Athletics. Alou started his perfect night at the plate by driving in a run with a double in the fourth inning. Thurman Munson homered with a man on base in the fifth and Alou added an insurance marker with a circuit clout in the eighth.

[DH] Cubs 4, Braves 1 (night game) / Braves 3, Cubs 2 at Atlanta (night game):
In a make-up of the previous night's rained-out game, the Cubs won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-1, but Phil Niekro pitched the Braves to a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. Fergie Jenkins, who pitched the lidlifter for the Cubs, yielded a run in the second inning on doubles by Earl Williams and Darrell Evans and trailed, 1-0, in a duel with Ron Schueler, who allowed only three hits in the first seven stanzas. However, Jose Cardenal and Don Kessinger singled in the eighth, leading to the appearance of Joe Hoerner, who failed in relief. After hitting Billy Williams with a pitch to load the bases with one out, Hoerner walked Jim Hickman to force in the tying run. Ron Santo grounded to Evans, Kessinger scoring, and when Evans threw wildly to the plate, Williams also came home. Carmen Fanzone then singled to drive in the final tally. In the nightcap, Niekro singled and scored on a double by Ralph Garr in the third inning. Marty Perez drew a pass with the bases loaded for another tally in the fourth and Mike Lum provided what proved to be the winning run with a homer in the fifth. Williams hit a round-tripper for the Cubs.

Pirates 6, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
After Dock Ellis gave up four runs in the first 1 1/3 innings, the Pirates came back behind the superb relief pitching of Bob Johnson to defeat the Astros, 6-4. Johnson allowed only two hits in the last 7 2/3 innings. The Pirates, who were trailing, 4-1, overtook the Astros with a four-run explosion in the fourth inning. Willie Stargell and Al Oliver singled, Manny Sanguillen batted them across with a double and Bob Robertson put the Pirates ahead with a homer. Roberto Clemente accounted for the last run with a round-tripper in the fifth.

Dodgers 7, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Willie Davis, capping a four-run outburst in the second inning, helped the Dodgers defeat the Expos, 7-3, to snap a five-game losing streak. Bobby Valentine and Bill Russell singled, Claude Osteen walked and Lee Lacy singled for one run before Davis cleared the sacks with his double. Clyde Mashore accounted for the Expos' runs with a homer in their half of the second.
