Brewers 6, Angels 5 at California (night game):
Two players who did not start the game for the Brewers came through with flying colors to beat the Angels, 6-5. Jim Colborn relieved after the Angels took a 5-4 lead against Skip Lockwood and pitched scoreless ball for the last 6 1/3 innings. Johnny Briggs, who was inserted into the lineup in the fourth, hit a homer in the fifth to tie the score and then homered again in the seventh to provide the winning run.
Orioles 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Mike Cuellar and Elrod Hendricks, who worked together as the Orioles' winning battery, also combined for a run in the eighth inning to beat the White Sox, 2-1. Hendricks, batting only .111, doubled with two out and scored on a single by Cuellar, who was hitting a meager .061. The other runs in the game came on homers in the fourth inning by Terry Crowley for the Orioles and by Dick Allen for the White Sox.
[DH] Indians 4, Rangers 3 (night game) / Indians 6, Rangers 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Gaylord Perry posted his 13th victory of the year and Ed Farmer gained his first of the season as the Indians edged the Rangers in both ends of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-3 and 6-5, with the second game going 12 innings. In the lidlifter, the Indians took a 4-1 lead with two runs in the seventh on singles by Alex Johnson and Ray Fosse, a late throw to the plate on a grounder by Lou Camilli and a single by John Lowenstein, enabling Perry to survive a two-run rally by the Rangers in the ninth. Chris Chambliss, who had three hits for the Indians in the first game, came back with three more in the second contest. After the Rangers took a 5-2 lead, Jerry Moses hit a two-run homer for the Indians in the eighth and Chambliss batted in the tying tally with a double in the ninth. Johnson then singled in the 12th and raced home from first with the winning run on a double by Graig Nettles.
Tigers 7, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
The Tigers ended their four-game losing streak by defeating the Royals, 7-0, behind the pitching of Joe Coleman, who doled out six hits. The Tigers collected 13 hits, including a triple and two singles by Tony Taylor, who scored three runs. Bill Freehan knocked in three with a single and double.
Yankees 6, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
The leader of the major leagues' firemen this season, Sparky Lyle allowed only one hit in 3 1/3 innings of relief and gained his 17th save as the Yankees defeated the Athletics, 6-2. The Yankees bunched four singles and a double by Felipe Alou for four runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. The A's, meanwhile, were held to one hit by Mike Kekich until two out in the sixth when they rallied for two runs and had two men on base with two out when Lyle took over to put out the fire.
Braves 4, Cubs 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Held to five hits, the Braves bunched four of them for four runs in the third inning and succeeded in defeating the Cubs, 4-3. Felix Millan led off with a single and was forced by Marty Perez. After George Stone sacrificed, Ralph Garr singled to score Perez. Dusty Baker followed with a two-run homer. Hank Aaron then walked and scored what proved to be the winning run on a double by Darrell Evans. The Cubs were held to six hits by Stone, but chased him in the ninth when Jim Hickman walked and Ron Santo homered.
Pirates 7, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Ramon Hernandez not only pitched four scoreless innings of relief but doubled in the 17th for his first major league hit to spark a four-run outburst that brought the Pirates a 7-3 victory over the Astros. The Pirates were saved from defeat when Roberto Clemente singled in the ninth and Willie Stargell homered to tie the score and send the game into overtime. In the 17th, after hitting his double, Hernandez scored on a two-bagger by Vic Davalillo. Following a wild pitch, Davalillo scored when Larry Howard dropped the throw to the plate on Clemente's grounder to Roger Metzger. Clemente advanced on a passed ball and counted on a single by Al Oliver. Manny Sanguillen then doubled to drive in the final tally.
Dodgers 11, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Dodgers broke a tie with two runs in the eighth inning and then exploded for six more runs in the ninth to clinch an 11-3 victory over the Expos. A hit batsman, a walk and singles by Bill Russell and Wes Parker produced the tie-breaking pair in the eighth. Jim Lefebvre homered with two men on base, Russell tripled for his fourth RBI of the game and Bill Buckner drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the ninth.
Padres 1, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
For the second time in five days, the Mets were beaten on a pass with the bases loaded when the Padres scored in the 14th inning to gain a 1-0 victory. Derrel Thomas singled to open the decisive stanza and when Dave Roberts bunted, both runners were safe on a late throw to second. Leron Lee followed with a safe bunt to load the bases. Thomas was forced at the plate on a grounder by Nate Colbert and Cito Gaston struck out, but Jerry Morales worked Tug McGraw for a pass to force in Roberts. The Mets similarly lost to the Expos, 4-3, July 2 when Bob Rauch walked Ron Fairly with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning.
Giants 6, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Tito Fuentes drove in two runs with a triple in the 10th inning to give the Giants a 6-4 victory over the Phillies. Dave Kingman walked with two out and Damaso Blanco singled before Fuentes connected for his three-bagger off Woodie Fryman.
