[DH] Rangers 2, Orioles 1 (night game) / Rangers 3, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
The last-place club in the West division, the Rangers rose up to beat the East division-leading Orioles in both games of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1 and 3-1. In the opener, the Rangers scored both their runs in the first inning. Dave Nelson, Toby Harrah and Don Mincher hit singles for the initial tally and the second run counted while Dick Billings was grounding into a double play. Rich Hand, who turned in his first complete game of the season and only the fifth to the credit of the Rangers' staff, allowed the Orioles' lone run on a homer by Bobby Grich in the second. Grich also scored the Orioles' run in the nightcap, hitting a single in the second inning, taking third on a single by Brooks Robinson and crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Paul Blair. The Rangers then trailed until the eighth when Hal King and Joe Lovitto singled and Lenny Randle smashed a homer.
Angels 4, Red Sox 3 at California (night game):
Breaking up a four-hour, eight-minute game, Sandy Alomar drove in a run with a single in the 16th inning to give the Angels a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox. Alomar's hit scored Syd O'Brien, who singled and took second on a sacrifice by Leo Cardenas. Tommy Harper provided the Red Sox runs with a bases-loaded double in the second. The Angels rallied to tie the score in the fifth, one run counting on a sacrifice fly by Winston Llenas and two on a single by Ken Berry.
White Sox 5, Tigers 2 at Chicago (day game):
With relief help from Terry Forster, Stan Bahnsen gained his 11th victory and the White Sox ended their four-game losing streak by defeating the Tigers, 5-2. The White Sox loaded the bases in the second inning on a walk to Carlos May, single by Mike Andrews and error by Norm Cash and scored three runs on a sacrifice fly by Ed Herrmann, single by Rich Morales and infield out by Bahnsen. Dick Allen accounted for two more runs with a homer in the fifth. Aurelio Rodriguez homered for the Tigers.
Indians 2, Royals 1 at Cleveland (day game):
An unearned run on a throwing error by Amos Otis enabled the Indians to defeat the Royals, 2-1. In the second inning, Graig Nettles walked, took third on a single by Alex Johnson and scored on a single by Ray Fosse. When Otis' throw to third struck Johnson and bounced into the Royals' dugout, Johnson scored what proved to be the deciding run. Lou Piniella homered for the Royals' marker in the third.
Yankees 1, Twins 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Bernie Allen, the first batter to face reliever Wayne Granger in the 11th inning, smashed a homer to give the Yankees a 1-0 victory over the Twins. Granger took over after Bert Blyleven was removed for a pinch-hitter in his scoreless duel with Mel Stottlemyre. When Danny Thompson singled to lead off the Twins' half of the 11th, Sparky Lyle replaced Stottlemyre and recorded his 18th save of the season.
A's 7, Brewers 0 at Oakland (day game):
Catfish Hunter pitched his second straight shutout and the Athletics smashed four homers to account for all their runs in a 7-0 victory over the Brewers. Joe Rudi started the slugging with a two-run homer in the third inning. Sal Bando and Mike Epstein hit successive blows in the sixth and Dave Duncan connected for three runs in the eighth.
Pirates 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Fielding lapses by the Braves resulted in three unearned runs and enabled the Pirates to gain a 5-3 victory. The Pirates' only earned run scored in the second inning on triples by Manny Sanguillen and Richie Hebner and an infield out by Gene Alley. Steve Blass gained his 10th victory with help from Ramon Hernandez and Dave Giusti. Ralph Garr homered with a man on base for the Braves in the third and Darrell Evans added their other run with a solo swat in the sixth.
Reds 3, Cubs 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Helping himself with the bat, Gary Nolan also had support from Johnny Bench and gained his 12th victory when the Reds defeated the Cubs, 3-2. Pete Rose singled in the first inning, stole second and scored on a single by Bench. Jim Hickman homered for the Cubs in the fourth, but the Reds regained the lead in their half when George Foster singled, stole second and scored on a single by Nolan. After the Cubs again pulled even in the sixth on a double by Randy Hundley and single by Don Kessinger, Nolan singled for his second hit of the game in the seventh, Rose walked and Bench drove in the deciding run with a single.
Giants 12, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Juan Marichal, who pitched six innings before being removed for a pinch-hitter, gained his first victory since June 2 and only his third of the season when the Giants overwhelmed the Expos, 12-1. Bernie Williams, who batted for Marichal, hit a two-run homer. Ernie McAnally was knocked out by the Giants in the fitfh and suffered his 11th defeat of the season against a single victory.
Mets 4, Dodgers 1 at New York (day game):
Three unearned runs and another that scored on a wild pitch enabled the Mets to beat the Dodgers, 4-1. An error led to the Mets' initial run in the third inning. With the score tied, 1-1, John Milner singled in the seventh and took third on a single by Ed Kranepool. Ted Martinez then squared around to attempt a squeeze bunt, but Pete Mikkelsen delivered a wild pitch, allowing Milner to score. The Mets added their final pair with the aid of two errors in the eighth.
Padres 8, Phillies 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Nate Colbert drove in five runs, including the last two with a homer in the ninth inning, to lead the Padres to an 8-5 victory over the Phillies. Leron Lee hit a single, double and triple to stand right behind Colbert in the Padres' attack. The Phillies rallied for four runs in the eighth to tie the score at 5-5, but Derrel Thomas walked in the ninth, Dave Roberts sacrificed and Lee singled to break the tie. Colbert followed with his homer to clinch the victory.
Cardinals 2, Astros 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Reggie Cleveland gained his seventh straight victory and 10th of the season when the Cardinals defeated the Astros, 2-1. The Cardinals scored their initial run off Jerry Reuss in the first inning on a single by Matty Alou and double by Joe Torre. Lou Brock singled in the third to become the first major leaguer with 100 hits this season. Tom Griffin was on the mound for the Astros in the eighth when the Cardinals added what proved to be their winning run on a double by Ted Sizemore, sacrifice by Alou and sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons. The Astros picked up their run in the ninth on singles by Jim Wynn, Bob Watson and Johnny Edwards, but Bobby Fenwick, running for Watson, tried to score from first on Edwards' hit and was thrown out.
