Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, Royals 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Pinch-hitter Tom Shopay drew a walk with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to force in the winning run as the Orioles ended their five-game losing streak by defeating the Royals, 2-1. Brooks Robinson led off the stanza with a double. After passing Bobby Grich intentionally, Dick Drago gave way to Tom Burgmeier, who walked Boog Powell to load the bases. Wright then took the mound for the Royals and passed Shopay on four pitches.

Yankees 7, Angels 3 at California (night game):
The Yankees erupted for six runs in the third inning and breezed to a 7-3 victory over the Angels. The Yankees collected six hits during their outburst, including a two-run single by Felipe Alou and two-run double by Ron Swoboda.

White Sox 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Homers by Dick Allen, Rick Reichardt and Ed Spiezio carried the White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Indians. Allen connected for the circuit in the fourth inning. With the Indians leading, 3-1, Carlos May singled in the seventh and Reichardt tied the score with his boundary belt. Spiezio followed with his first homer of the season to provide the winning run. Ray Fosse hit a two-run homer for the Indians.

Tigers 6, Rangers 5 at Detroit (night game):
Mickey Stanley broke a tie with a homer in the sixth inning to give the Tigers a 6-5 victory over the Rangers. Jim Northrup drove in two runs for the Tigers with a single and double, while Dave Nelson produced a pair for the Rangers with a homer and single.

Brewers 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
After falling behind in the second inning, 4-0, the Brewers rallied for three runs in the seventh and then defeated the Twins, 5-4, when Joe Lahoud homered with a man on base in the ninth. Eric Soderholm accounted for three of the Twins' runs with a circuit clout. Lahoud, who drew a walk and scored as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, remained in the lineup and belted his homer in the ninth after Ron Clark had led off with a single.

Red Sox 4, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Only two outs away from a no-hitter, Marty Pattin surrendered a single to Reggie Jackson for the only hit off his deliveries as the Red Sox righthander shut out the Athletics, 4-0. Carlton Fisk, Pattin's batterymate, supported him with a single and homer, driving in two runs. Joe Horlen was a loser in his first start of the year after 17 relief appearances.

[DH] Astros 6, Cubs 5 (day game) / Cubs 9, Astros 5 at Chicago (day game):
Billy Williams had a fantastic day at bat with eight hits in eight trips, but the Cubs lost the first game of a doubleheader to the Astros, 6-5, before coming back to win the second game, 9-5. Williams' hits included a homer in each contest. The Astros gained their victory with a four-run rally in the seventh inning. Johnny Edwards led off with a single and stopped at third on a double by Tommy Helms. Jimmy Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to score Edwards. Helms took third and also scored on a sacrifice fly by Roger Metzger. Norm Miller then singled and Jim Wynn followed with a homer for the winning blow. The Astros also had a homer by Lee May earlier in the game. Rick Monday hit two homers and Williams and Joe Pepitone whacked one apiece for the Cubs in the nightcap. Pepitone's poke came with two men on base.

Reds 5, Pirates 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Jack Billingham pitched a shutout and Johnny Bench smashed four hits, including his 22nd homer, as the Reds defeated the Pirates, 5-0. Bench drove in three runs.

Expos 6, Padres 5 at Montreal (night game):
After a mishap on the bases, Bob Bailey scored from first on a double by Clyde Mashore in the 12th inning to bring the Expos a 6-5 victory over the Padres. Ken Singleton led off the 12th with a single, but was out when he was hit on the basepaths by a ball batted by Bailey, who was credited with an automatic single. Mashore, however, settled matters with his double. The Padres' runs scored on two homers -- one by Derrel Thomas with two men on base and the other by Cito Gaston with one aboard. Singleton homered for the Expos.

Giants 6, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Ron Bryant yielded only two hits and pitched the Giants to a 6-1 victory over the Mets. Willie McCovey homered to start the Giants' scoring in the second inning. John Milner and Bud Harrelson collided going after a fly by Chris Speier in the third and the ball fell for double, two runs scoring. Milner was forced to leave the game. Duffy Dyer, going into the outfield as Milner's replacement, dropped a fly by Speier in the seventh, allowing two runs to score.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Continuing his remarkable pitching for the Phillies, who were deep in the cellar in the East division, Steve Carlton extended his personal winning streak to seven games by defeating the Dodgers, 4-1. The Phillies scored all their runs off Don Sutton in the second inning. Willie Montanez walked, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Denny Doyle. After a single by Carlton and pass to Larry Bowa loaded the bases, Don Money came up and cleared the sacks with a double.

Braves 5, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
A wild pitch by Lowell Palmer with the bases loaded and two out in the 15th inning enabled the Braves to defeat the Cardinals, 5-4. Lou Brock had five hits in six trips for the Cardinals. Hank Aaron hit his 658th homer for the Braves, connecting with two men on base in the seventh inning, and also walked five times. In the 15th, Gil Garrido led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. George Stone was up to bunt, but Palmer passed him on four pitches. Garrido took third after a long fly by Mike Lum. After Dusty Baker was called out on strikes, the Cardinals passed Aaron intentionally to load the bases. Then, with a count of one ball and two strikes on Oscar Brown, Palmer threw a curve that bounced in the dirt past Ted Simmons, allowing Garrido to score.
