Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 11, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Breaking a tight game wide open, the Royals exploded for seven runs in the 10th inning, with a grand slam by Cookie Rojas as the crowning blow, to defeat the Orioles, 11-4. Grant Jackson, who walked one batter, was the loser when the Royals went on to load the bases against Eddie Watt and Lou Piniella was hit by a pitch to force in the tie-breaking tally. The Royals added two more runs on hits by John Mayberry and Bobby Knoop before Rojas came up and smashed his slam off Mickey Scott.

Yankees 5, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Mel Stottlemyre, who pitched the Yankees to a 5-0 victory, shut out the Angels for the third straight time this season and beat them for the 10th time in a row since June 30, 1967. Stottlemyre, who drove in two of the Yankees' runs with a bases-loaded single in the second inning, brought his career record against the California club to 17-3.

White Sox 5, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Successful in his fourth try, Wilbur Wood posted his 13th victory of the season when the White Sox defeated the Indians, 5-4. Tony Muser, who entered the game after Dick Allen hurt his foot in the fifth inning, singled in the ninth, took second on a sacrifice by Rick Reichardt and scored the winning run on a single by Carlos May.

Tigers 3, Rangers 1 at Detroit (night game):
Two unearned runs provided the Tigers' margin in a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. In the third inning, Dick McAuliffe singled, stopped at third on a double by Aurelio Rodriguez and scored on a grounder by Jim Northrup. When Lenny Randle fumbled the ball, Rodriguez also crossed the plate. Mickey Stanley was caught off third base in the fourth but got back safe on a wild throw by Hal King and scored on a two-out single by McAuliffe.

Twins 7, Brewers 1 at Minnesota (night game):
In a fifth-inning display of power, the Twins unloaded homers by Rick Renick, Bobby Darwin and Eric Soderholm while scoring six runs to defeat the Brewers, 7-1. Renick led off the stanza with his round-tripper for the first hit off Ken Brett. George Mitterwald doubled and scored with two out on a single by Danny Thompson. Harmon Killebrew also singled, then Darwin and Soderholm followed with successive homers.

Red Sox 7, A's 6 at Oakland (night game):
Perfect nights at bat by the opposing catchers marked a hitfest in which the Red Sox defeated the Athletics, 7-6. Dave Duncan had five straight hits for the A's, including a homer, while Carlton Fisk hit a homer and two singles for the Red Sox and also walked twice.

Astros 10, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
Two homers by Jim Wynn and one apiece by Norm Miller and Lee May helped the Astros outslug the Cubs, 10-6. Wynn drove in four runs. Billy Williams and Jim Hickman homered for the Cubs.

Reds 6, Pirates 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench batted in three runs with two homers to lead the Reds to a 6-3 victory over the Pirates. Tony Perez hit for the circuit to account for the Reds' first run in the second inning. Bench homered after Joe Morgan was safe on an error in the fourth. Bobby Tolan drove in two runs with a single in the seventh and Bench added the Reds' final marker with a homer in the eighth.

Padres 6, Expos 5 at Montreal (night game):
A loser of five previous decisions, Mike Corkins gained his first victory of the season when the Padres defeated the Expos, 6-5. Corkins was the second of six pitchers used by the Padres. Larry Stahl and Cito Gaston homered for the Padres. In the fifth inning, after Dave Roberts singled and Stahl walked, Gaston singled to drive in what proved to be the winning run.

Mets 4, Giants 0 at New York (day game):
While getting four-hit pitching from Jon Matlack, the Mets took advantage of Sam McDowell's wildness and proceeded to defeat the Giants, 4-0. McDowell walked the first three batters he faced and a run scored while Jim Fregosi was grounding into a double play. A walk to Wayne Garrett, infield hit by Matlack and triple by Bud Harrelson added a pair in the second. Willie Mays singled, Duffy Dyer was hit by a pitch and Bill Sudakis singled to produce the final run in the seventh.

Dodgers 9, Phillies 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Every player in the Dodgers' lineup participated in an 18-hit attack that produced a 9-5 victory over the Phillies. Manny Mota, Wes Parker and Bill Buckner each had three hits. Parker batted in two runs with a triple in the fourth when the Dodgers scored four times to take an 8-3 lead. Larry Bowa had three of the Phillies' 13 hits off Tommy John, including a triple.

Cardinals 7, Braves 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Bob Gibson gained his ninth straight victory in the longest winning streak by any pitcher in the major leagues this season when the Cardinals' veteran shut out the Braves, 7-0. In the fourth inning, Gibson and Lou Brock hit the first back-to-back homers by the Cardinals this year.
