Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 6, White Sox 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Mike Cuellar drove in two runs with a homer and single while pitching the Orioles to a 6-3 victory over the White Sox. Davey Johnson homered with a man on base to start the Orioles' scoring in the fourth inning and batted in another run with a grounder in the sixth. Cuellar homered in the seventh. A double by Johnson, walk to Elrod Hendricks and singles by Cuellar and Don Buford added a pair in the eighth.

Tigers 5, Royals 3 at Detroit (day game):
Jim Northrup batted in two runs, scored one and set up another tally with a sacrifice bunt as the Tigers defeated the Royals, 5-3. Tom Timmerman, with relief help from Fred Scherman, gained his first victory since June 21. Northrup singled with the bases loaded in the second inning to produce the Tigers' first two runs. Doubles by Northrup and Bill Freehan added a tally in the fifth. Aurelio Rodriguez doubled in the seventh and was bunted to third by Northrup. After Freehan walked, Rodriguez scored on a passed ball. Norm Cash then doubled to drive in Freehan with the Tigers' final run.

Angels 4, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Pinch-hitter John Stephenson came through with a two-run homer in the ninth inning to carry the Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Brewers. Leo Cardenas opened the rally with an inside-the-park homer. Johnny Briggs made a leaping try for Cardenas' fly but crashed into the wall. After one out, Art Kusnyer singled, bringing Ken Sanders to the mound in relief of Gary Ryerson. With a count of two balls, Stephenson hit Sanders' next pitch into the center field bleachers.

Twins 7, Red Sox 1 at Minnesota (day game):
After taking the lead with a two-run homer by Bobby Darwin in the second inning, the Twins added five unearned runs in the sixth to clinch a 7-1 victory over the Red Sox. Rod Carew was safe on an error by John Kennedy to open the sixth. After Harmon Killebrew was retired, Chuck Manuel and Darwin singled to load the bases. Steve Braun walked to force in Carew. Phil Roof struck out for what would have been the third out except for Kennedy's error. However, the Twins went on to add four more runs on singles by Roof, Cesar Tovar and Danny Thompson.

A's 6, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
Sal Bando belted two homers, the first of his career in Yankee Stadium, and drove in four runs to pace the Athletics to a 6-2 victory. Bando started with a solo swat in the fourth inning and then homered again after a double by Joe Rudi and pass to Reggie Jackson in the ninth. Jackson also homered for the A's, while Bobby Murcer accounted for the Yankees' runs with a circuit clout in the fourth inning.

Indians 7, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
The Indians piled up six runs in the second inning and breezed to a 7-0 victory over the Rangers behind the four-hit hurling of Dick Tidrow, who posted his first shutout of the season. Buddy Bell and Chris Chambliss hit doubles and Frank Duffy tripled during the big inning. Tommy McCraw, who drove in a run with a single, accounted for the Tribe's last tally with a homer in the fifth.

Braves 4, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
After yielding two runs on a homer by Joe Pepitone in the first inning, Phil Niekro bore down the rest of the way and pitched the Braves to a 4-2 victory over the Cubs. Darrell Evans started the Braves' scoring with a homer in the second and the tying run followed in the fourth on two walks and a pair of infield outs. Sonny Jackson singled in the fifth, took third on a single by Mike Lum and scored the go-ahead run while the Cubs were executing a double play on a grounder by Hank Aaron. Earl Williams clinched Niekro's third straight victory over the Cubs this season by smashing a homer in the sixth.

Expos 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Two walks and a single by Boots Day in the eighth inning produced the run that gave the Expos a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. Bill Singer passed Tim McCarver to open the eighth and, after two out, also walked Tim Foli. Jim Brewer relieved and, on his first pitch, Day singled to drive in the winning run.

Pirates 5, Astros 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Pirates' bench strength manifested itself when "super subs" Gene Clines, Vic Davalillo and Jose Pagan contributed to a 5-1 victory over the Astros. Clines rapped a triple and two singles. Davalillo hit a double and single, his double coming ahead of a homer by Willie Stargell in the third inning. Pagan homered as a pinch-hitter for Dock Ellis in the seventh.

Mets 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
A two-run single by Bill Sudakis in the first inning enabled the Mets to defeat the Padres, 2-1. Willie Mays walked, John Milner singled and, after an infield out by Dave Schneck, both runners scored on Sudakis' hit. Gary Gentry, who pitched seven innings and allowed only three hits, gained his first victory since May 17 to end a personal five-game losing streak. Tug McGraw, who finished, yielded the Padres' run on a homer by Nate Colbert in the eighth.

Phillies 11, Giants 4 at San Francisco (day game):
The frustrated Phillies, who had the poorest record of any club in the major leagues, exploded for 11 runs in the seventh inning and smashed the Giants, 11-4. The Phillies sent 15 men to bat in their outburst and collected only six hits, plus two sacrifice flies, but the Giants threw in six walks and two wild pitches. Willie Montanez batted in two runs with a double and Oscar Gamble drove in two with a triple. Montanez, Don Money and Gamble each reached base twice and scored on both occasions. The Giants tied the major league record for most pitchers in one inning, 5.

Reds 12, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
The Reds piled up 16 hits, including a triple and three singles by Cesar Geronimo, and walloped the Cardinals, 12-2. The Reds decided the issue at Al Santorini's expense with four runs in the first inning on singles by Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Bobby Tolan, a sacrifice fly by Johnny Bench, pass to Tony Perez and Geronimo's triple.
