Orioles 6, White Sox 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Boog Powell homered with a man on base and Brooks Robinson batted in two runs with a pair of singles to lead the Orioles to a 6-1 victory over the White Sox in an abbreviated first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The Orioles knocked out Wilbur Wood in the seventh inning and were still batting when rain brought the contest to a close. The second game was postponed.

Tigers 2, Royals 0 at Detroit (day game):
While Bill Slayback pitched his first major league shutout, Norm Cash and Aurelio Rodriguez hit homers to bat the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the Royals.

[DH] Angels 1, Brewers 0 (day game) / Brewers 2, Angels 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Splitting two tight games, the Angels won the opener of a doubleheader, 1-0, and the Brewers took the nightcap, 2-1. In the first game, Dave May held the Brewers to two singles, both by Tommie Reynolds, and beat Jim Colborn, who allowed three hits, when the Angels scored in the third inning on a pass to Ken Berry, single by Leo Cardenas and sacrifice fly by Vada Pinson. The Angels picked up their run in the second game on singles by Sandy Alomar and Berry around a sacrifice in the fifth inning. The Brewers came back with their winning pair in the eighth on a bases-loaded single by George Scott. Bill Parsons, as the beneficiary of Scott's hit, broke his personal five-game losing streak.

Red Sox 6, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Marty Pattin pitched a four-hitter for the Red Sox and beat the Twins, 6-1, for his fifth straight victory. Reggie Smith and Danny Cater each homered with a man on base off Bert Blyleven.

A's 5, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
The Athletics completed the sweep of a four-game series with the Yankees by beating Mel Stottlemyre, 5-2. Stottlemyre, who went into the game with 22 innings of scoreless pitching to his credit, was stopped on his streak when Joe Rudi, the second batter to face him, smashed a homer. Mike Epstein also homered with a man on base in the sixth inning.

Rangers 3, Indians 2 at Texas (night game):
Hitless in five previous times at bat, Dave Nelson came through with a run-scoring single with two out in the 12th inning to give the Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Indians. Lenny Randle beat out an infield hit with one away, took second on a sacrifice by Horacio Pina and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Ed Farmer before Nelson rapped his single.

Cubs 5, Braves 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs bunched four hits with a sacrifice fly for three runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Braves, 5-3. With one out, Ron Santo and Joe Pepitone singled to chase George Stone. Jose Cardenal, who had hit a homer earlier in the game, greeted Pat Jarvis with a single, scoring Santo to break a 2-2 tie. Don Kessinger followed with a single to drive in Pepitone. After Denny McLain replaced Jarvis, Randy Hundley hit a sacrifice fly to add another tally.

Dodgers 4, Expos 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers scored four runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Expos, 4-2. Singles by Manny Mota and Willie Davis, together with a wild throw by Ron Fairly, produced the first run. After Wes Parker walked, Bill Buckner drove in a pair with a triple and counted himself on a fly by Bobby Valentine.

[DH] Pirates 3, Astros 2 (day game) / Pirates 3, Astros 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Playing before Pittsburgh's largest crowd of the year, 49,391, the Pirates swept a doubleheader with the Astros, winning the first game in 10 innings, 3-2, and taking the second game in regulation time by the same 3-2 score. In the lidlifter, Bob Robertson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the Pirates' winning run. In the nightcap, the Pirates picked up an unearned run in the first inning and then scored twice in the fourth on a single by Al Oliver, double by Willie Stargell and single by Rennie Stennett. Dave Giusti, who was the winner in relief in the first game, saved the second game after giving up a single by Lee May that drove in the Astros' two runs in the ninth inning.

Padres 7, Mets 3 at San Diego (day game):
Throwing errors by Jerry Koosman and Danny Frisella helped the Padres score four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Mets, 7-3. Dave Roberts walked to open the stanza and scored to break a tie when Koosman threw wildly on a bunt by Jerry Morales. Taking third on the error, Morales crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Nate Colbert. When Cito Gaston and Johhny Jeter followed with singles, Frisella replaced Koosman. Bill Greif bunted to Frisella, who threw wildly to third trying for a forceout, and both Gaston and Jeter scored.

Giants 10, Phillies 7 at San Francisco (day game):
Tito Fuentes hit the first grand-slam of his major league career and Garry Maddox drove in three runs with another homer to help power the Giants to a 10-7 victory over the Phillies. Jim Barr and Bobby Bonds singled in the third inning and Maddox was hit by a pitch to load the bases. An error by Don Money and balk by Woodie Fryman let two runs score. After Ed Goodson walked to fill the sacks again, Fuentes delivered his slam.

Reds 4, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (day game):
The Reds closed out their season series with the Cardinals with 10 victories in 12 games by taking the final meeting, 4-1. Bobby Tolan broke a 1-1 tie with a homer in the fourth inning and also doubled and scored in the sixth.
