Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 4, Angels 1 at Boston (night game):
Danny Cater, who booted a ground ball to allow the Angels to score an unearned run, made up for his error with a pair of doubles to lead the Red Sox to a 4-1 victory. After the Angels got their run in the sixth inning to tie the score at 1-1, Cater came up with the bases loaded in the Red Sox half and doubled to drive in two runs. Cater doubled again in the eighth and scored on a single by John Kennedy.
Tigers 3, White Sox 1 at Detroit (night game):
Mickey Lolich gained his 16th victory of the season with batting help from Jim Northrup, who drove in two runs with a homer and triple to enable the Tigers to defeat the White Sox, 3-1.
Orioles 3, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
The Orioles capitalized on walks to score all their runs in a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Don Buford drew a pass to lead off the first inning and scored on singles by Johnny Oates and Brooks Robinson. Another walk to Buford, an error by Don Mincher and single by Bobby Grich added a tally in the third. Terry Crowley and Davey Johnson strolled in the ninth and, after a sacrifice, pinch-runner Don Baylor crossed the plate on a passed ball.
Reds 7, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Reds concentrated their attack in the middle three innings when they scored all their runs to defeat the Cubs, 7-2. In the fourth, after a single by Bobby Tolan, double by Johnny Bench and pass to Tony Perez loaded the bases, Denis Menke hit a sacrifice fly, Tolan scoring. Bench took third on the play and after Perez stole second, Cesar Geronimo batted them home with a single. Pete Rose homered in the fifth and the Reds' final three runs followed in the sixth. Menke singled and Darrel Chaney walked, Wayne Simpson beat out a bunt and when Dan McGinn threw wildly to first, Menke and Chaney scored. Simpson crossed the plate on an infield hit by JOe Morgan and wild throw by Glenn Beckert.
Cardinals 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Bob Gibson extended his personal winning streak to 10 games by pitching the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Astros. The Redbirds broke a 1-1 tie with a homer by Donn Clenclenon in the eighth inning and then added what proved to be the deciding run in that same stanza on a single by Ed Crosby, sacrifice by Dal Maxvill and two-out single by Lou Brock.
Pirates 6, Braves 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell smashed a three-run homer in the first inning and then drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth as the Pirates defeated the Braves, 6-5. After Stargell's homer, the Braves went ahead, 5-3, with the aid of a round-tripper by Earl Williams. The Pirates picked up a run in the sixth and tied the score in the seventh when Rennie Stennett singled, Jose Pagan sacrificed and Richie Zisk delivered a pinch-single. In the eighth, Gene Clines doubled, took third on an infield hit by Al Oliver and scored the winning run on Stargell's fly.
