Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] Red Sox 2, A's 1 (night game) / Red Sox 4, A's 3 at Boston (night game):
A squeeze bunt in the first game and pass with the bases loaded in the second game provided the winning runs for the Red Sox in a 2-1 and 4-3 sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Athletics. The nightcap was decided in 11 innings. Marty Pattin pitched the opener for the Red Sox and gained his sixth straight victory when Doug Griffin laid down a safe squeeze bunt with two out in the seventh inning, scoring Danny Cater with the tie-breaking tally. Joe Rudi hit a three-run homer in the second game to put the A's ahead, 3-2, but Griffin drove in a run with a single in the ninth inning to tie the score. Griffin, who had seven hits in nine trips for his night's work, was passed intentionally to load the bases with two out in the 11th. Darold Knowles then was unable to find the plate and walked Carl Yastrzemski on four straight pitches to force in John Kennedy, who had opened the inning with a double.
Orioles 8, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
The Orioles, who failed to hold two-run leads in the eighth and ninth innings, finally broke away in the 10th and scored three times to defeat the Royals, 8-5. Paul Blair walked to open the overtime stanza and Brooks Robinson sacrificed. Davey Johnson was nicked by a pitch and Johnny Oates hit a pop fly that fell safe for a single to load the bases. Merv Rettenmund then delivered a pinch-single to drive in two runs. Don Buford walked to reload the sacks and, after Oates was forced out, Bobby Grich drew a pass to send Rettenmund home with the final run.
Brewers 2, Twins 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Two unearned runs resulting from an error by Eric Soderholm enabled the Brewers to defeat the Twins. 2-1. The Twins scored their run in the first inning on singles by Cesar Tovar, Harmon Killebrew and Soderholm. Ron Theobald singled for the Brewers in the fourth and scored from first base when Soderholm threw wildly on a bunt by Brock Davis. After the next two batters went out, Joe Lahoud doubled to drive in Davis.
Tigers 5, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Striking out 13, Bill Slayback allowed only five hits and pitched the Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Rangers. Ed Brinkman had two hits for the Tigers and scored twice, both times after moving up on sacrifices by Slayback.
Braves 6, Cardinals 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The batting of Earl Williams and Ralph Garr carried the Braves to a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals behind the relief pitching of Pat Jarvis. Williams drove in a run with a single in the first inning and iced the decision with a two-run homer in the seventh. In between, Garr broke a 2-2 tie with a double that sent two runs across the plate in the fourth. A pulled hamstring muscle forced Jim Hardin off the mound after four innings. Jarvis gave up a homer by Ted Simmons in the fifth and then blanked the Cardinals the rest of the way.
Mets 2, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A double by Willie Mays in the fifth inning for the Mets' fourth and last hit scored Bud Harrelson from first base and beat the Dodgers, 2-1. Harrelson reached base on an error by Steve Garvey. The Dodgers counted their run in the first on a single by Lee Lacy, a wild pitch and infield outs by Manny Mota and Willie Davis. Singles by Cleon Jones and Dave Schneck, an infield out by Ted Martinez and sacrifice fly by Jerry Grote produced the Mets' tying tally in the second.
