Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 5, A's 4 at Boston (night game):
With two out in the 14th inning, Doug Griffin scored from first base on an error by Sal Bando to bring the Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Athletics. Don Newhauser, the winner in relief for the second straight night, turned in a terrfic clutch performance, taking over with the bases loaded and none out in the 10th and retiring Dave Duncan on a pop fly and Don Mincher and Adrian Garrett on strikes. The A's filled the sacks again in the 14th with two away but failed to score when Newhauser fanned George Hendrick. Griffin, who had hit his first homer of the season in the fourth, singled with two out in the Red Sox half of the 14th. Carl Yastrzemski then smashed a hot grounder that bounced off the second baseman's glove and while the A's pursued the ball in right-center field, Griffin raced home.
Indians 8, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Jack Brohamer and Tommy McCraw batted in three runs apiece to lead the Indians' attack in an 8-2 victory over the White Sox. The Indians clinched the outcome with four runs in the fourth inning after loading the bases on a walk to Ray Fosse and singles by Frank Duffy and Del Unser. Brohamer then doubled to drive in two runs and McCraw singled to plate two more.
Orioles 7, Royals 6 at Kansas City (night game):
The Orioles built up a 7-0 lead, scoring their last run on an error, and then staggered to a 7-6 victory over the Royals. In the fourth inning, Don Baylor singled, stole second and scored on a single by Brooks Robinson to put the Orioles ahead, 6-0. When Lou Piniella missed connections with the hit to left field, Robinson circled the bases to score what proved to be the deciding run. The Royals, in their comeback, knocked out Pat Dobson in the sixth after counting their first five runs, but Grant Jackson allowed only one more run in 3 1/3 innings of game-saving relief work.
Brewers 2, Twins 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
The return of Ellie Rodriguez to the lineup after a week's absence because of illness sparked the Brewers to a 2-0 victory over the Twins behind the five-hit pitching of Bill Parsons. Bert Blyleven, on the hill for the Twins, allowed only one hit until the fifth inning when Dave May singled. After stealing second and going to third on a groundout, May scored on a double by Rodriguez, who continued to third when Cesar Tovar fumbled the ball in right field. Parsons then iced his victory with a sacrifice fly.
[DH] Yankees 6, Angels 0 (night game) / Yankees 3, Angels 0 at New York (night game):
The four-hit pitching of Fritz Peterson and Mel Stottlemyre, plus a barrage of homers, carried the Yankees to 6-0 and 3-0 victories over the Angels in a twi-night doubleheader. Bobby Murcer hit two homers in support of Peterson in the opener. After Murcer's second round-tripper in the fifth, the Yankees had their first three-homer inning of the season when Ron Blomberg and Johnny Callison also hit for the circuit. Stottlemyre shut out the Angels for the fifth straight time in the nightcap. John Ellis homered with a man on base in the seventh to seal the victory.
Tigers 3, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Mickey Lolich turned in his 17th complete game and gained his 17th victory when the Tigers beat the Rangers, 3-1, with homers by Dick McAuliffe and Norm Cash. Playing before 24,222, their largest crowd since coming to Texas, the Rangers scored in the first inning on a double by Dave Nelson and single by Dick Billings. McAuliffe tied the score with a homer in the fifth and Cash won the game by hitting for the circuit with Jim Northrup on base in the sixth.
Cardinals 2, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Bob Gibson accounted for his own winning run with a homer as the Cardinals' ace defeated the Braves, 2-1, for his 11th straight victory. The Cardinals counted their first run off George Stone without the benefit of a hit in the first inning. Ted Sizemore was safe on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third after a long fly and came home on another wild pitch. Gibson smashed his homer over the center field fence in the sixth and, as a result, was able to shrug off a circuit clout by Darrell Evans for the Braves' run in the seventh.
Cubs 11, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Continuing his hot hitting, Billy Williams batted in six runs with a homer, double and two singles to pace the Cubs to an 11-3 victory over the Astros. Williams smashed his sixth homer in his last 11 games with a man on base in the third inning and drove in three of the Cubs' six runs in the eighth with a bases-loaded double before adding his last RBI with a single in the ninth. Joe Pepitone also homered for the Cubs, while the Astros had round-trippers by Doug Rader, Cesar Cedeno and Jim Wynn.
Dodgers 3, Phillies 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Posting his fifth shutout of the season, Don Sutton pitched the Dodgers to a 3-0 victory over the Phillies. Wes Parker homered after a pass to Frank Robinson in the second inning to give Sutton more than enough runs to win, but the Dodgers added another tally in the fifth on a double by Lee Lacy and triple by Willie Davis. Ken Reynolds, the Phillies' loser, suffered his sixth straight defeat without a victory this season.
Reds 11, Pirates 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Joe Morgan and Bobby Tolan batted in seven runs between them to lead the Reds to an 11-5 victory over the Pirates. Morgan accounted for four RBIs with two homers and a pass with the bases loaded, while Tolan added three with an infield out and single. The Reds broke a 4-4 tie and went ahead to stay in the seventh inning when Morgan drew his pass with the sacks filled and Tolan hit a grounder to add an insurance run.
Padres 5, Expos 4 at San Diego (night game):
With their backs to the wall, the Padres rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Expos, 5-4. The Padres started their rally when Johnny Jeter and Enzo Hernandez singled and Curt Blefary walked to load the bases. Mike Marshall, relieving Bill Stoneman, was greeted with a two-run single by Derrel Thomas and when Ron Woods threw wildly from center field, a third run crossed the plate. Dave Roberts singled, sending Thomas to third. After Jerry Morales popped up, Nate Colbert hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run.
Mets 3, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Willie Mays celebrated his first appearance in San Francisco in a Mets' uniform by hitting a two-run homer in the fifth inning to beat his former Giants' teammates, 3-1. A single by Ted Martinez, double by Jerry Grote and infield out by Bud Harrelson gave the Mets their first run before Mays came to the plate and smashed the 650th homer of his career. Chris Speier accounted for the Giants' run with a homer in the sixth.
