Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] A's 5, Red Sox 3 (day game) / Red Sox 3, A's 0 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox, playing separate-admission, day-and-night games with the Athletics, lost in the sunshine, 5-3, but came back to win under the lights, 3-0. Carl Yastrzemski hit his first homer of the season in the day contest, but the Red Sox were stopped on their seven-game winning streak when the Athletics broke a 3-3 tie with two unearned runs in the eighth inning. With two out, Dave Duncan lifted a pop fly and was safe when Doug Griffin dropped the ball after colliding with John Kennedy. Ted Kubiak walked and Gene Tenace, batting for Darold Knowles, drove in both runners with a triple. Griffin made amends for his error by driving in one run and scoring another in the night game to support Sonny Siebert, who posted the shutout with a five-hitter.

White Sox 5, Indians 3 at Chicago (day game):
Dick Allen belted two homers and Carlos May smashed one to offset the hitting of Chris Chambliss and give the White Sox a 5-3 victory over the Indians. Chambliss drove in all of the Tribe's tallies, starting with a two-run double in the first inning. Allen tied the score with a homer after a pass to May in the White Sox half. Chambliss put the Indians ahead again with a round-tripper in the fourth, but May and Allen hit back-to-back homers in the sixth to decide the outcome for the White Sox.

Royals 8, Orioles 5 at Kansas City (night game):
A triple by Richie Scheinblum in the eighth inning carried the Royals to an 8-5 victory over the Orioles. The Royals loaded the bases on two walks around a safe bunt by Freddie Patek and tied the score at 5-5 on a pass to Amos Otis before Scheinblum smashed his triple off Roric Harrison to give him four RBIs for the day. Boog Powell batted in three for the Orioles with a homer and double.

Twins 9, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (day game):
Sparked by Steve Braun, who had four hits and drove in three runs, the Twins defeated the Brewers, 9-5, to end their six-game losing streak. After Braun's RBIs produced a 3-1 lead, the Twins scored three more runs in the eighth, two crossing the plate on a pinch-single by Chuck Manuel, who batted for Ray Corbin after the starting pitcher had hurt his hand while at bat. The Brewers came back with four unearned runs in their half, but Braun doubled for his fourth hit in the ninth to touch off a three-run outburst that clinched the victory for the Twins.

[DH] Angels 1, Yankees 0 (day game) / Yankees 7, Angels 1 at New York (day game):
The Yankees, who were shut out in the first game, 1-0, came slugging back with three homers and beat the Angels in the second game of a doubleheader, 7-1. Sparky Lyle, who relieved Steve Kline at the start of the eighth inning, was the loser of the lidlifter. Leo Cardenas greeted Lyle with a single and Vada Pinson doubled. After an intentional pass to Bob Oliver, Ken McMullen forced Cardenas at the plate, but Andy Kosco batted for Jim Spencer and hit a sacrifice fly to produce the Angels' first run off Yankee pitching in 38 innings. In the nightcap, the Yankees jumped on Nolan Ryan for three runs in the first inning on a walk to Horace Clarke and homers by Bobby Murcer and Ron Blomberg. Roy White added two runs with a circuit clout in the third. Rob Gardner, who had the Angels shut out until Oliver homered in the ninth, turned in his first complete game in the major leagues since pitching for the Mets in 1966.

Tigers 6, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Aurelio Rodriguez, who singled and scored on his first two trips to the plate, also smashed a homer to pace the Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the Rangers. Rodriguez scored in the first inning on a double by Bill Freehan. After Rodriguez singled again in the third, Freehan walked and Norm Cash drove in both runners with a double. Rodriguez homered in the seventh.

Braves 8, Cardinals 7 at Atlanta (night game):
After failing to hold a 5-0 lead, the Braves came back to beat the Cardinals, 8-7, when Dusty Baker homered in the 10th inning to give Denny McLain his first victory in an Atlanta uniform. McLain, appearing in the 10th as the Braves' fourth pitcher of the game, retired the Cardinals in order and then was the winner when Baker homered on the first pitch thrown by Tony Cloninger, who had just taken over in relief for the Cards.

Astros 7, Cubs 2 at Houston (night game):
The Astros exploded for five runs in the eighth inning, three scoring on a homer by Cesar Cedeno, to gain a 7-2 victory over the Cubs. A double by Bob Watson, intentional pass to Doug Rader and singles by Tommy Helms and Don Wilson produced the first two runs of the outburst before Cedeno hit his homer.

Dodgers 4, Phillies 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Making his first start since June 24, Bill Singer gained his first victory since May 16 when the Dodgers defeated the Phillies, 4-3. Singer was lifted with two men on base in the ninth inning and Willie Montanez homered off Jim Brewer to account for the Phillies' runs. The Dodgers scored three times in the fourth, two coming on a homer by Frank Robinson, and added what proved to be the deciding tally in the seventh when Bill Buckner tripled and Willie Davis singled. Singer had been out of action since suffering a broken knuckle in late June.

Reds 6, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Joe Morgan rapped four straight hits to set the early pace for the Reds, who then broke a tie with two runs in the eighth inning on a safe bunt by Ted Uhlaender and single by Darrel Chaney to pull away from the Pirates, 6-3. Morgan drove in two runs and scored one. With the game tied, 3-3, Johnny Bench walked in the eighth and took third on a single by Tony Perez. Cesar Geronimo struck out, but Uhlaender laid down his bunt to score Bench. Chaney then rapped his single to drive in Perez. A double by Perez added an insurance marker in the ninth.

Expos 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Hector Torres, who entered the game in the first inning after Tim Foli was banished in an argument with the umpires, smashed a tie-breaking homer in the sixth to send the Expos on their way to a 3-1 victory over the Padres. Ron Hunt doubled in the first, stole second and scored on an infield out by Foli, who drew the thumb in a beef over the call at first base. A walk to Fred Norman, a sacrifice and single by Dave Roberts supplied the Padres' tying run in the third. After Torres hit his deciding homer, the Expos added a run in the ninth on a pass to Mike Marshall with the bases loaded.

Giants 2, Mets 1 at San Francisco (day game):
A wild pitch by Danny Frisella with the bases loaded in the ninth inning handed a run to the Giants for a 2-1 victory over the Mets. Frank Reberger, pitching his first complete game of the season for the Giants, was nicked for an unearned run in the fourth inning. The Giants tied the score in the fifth on a triple by Tito Fuentes and single by Ken Henderson. Frisella, replacing Jerry Koosman in the ninth, walked Chris Speier, who raced to third on a single by Ed Goodson. The Mets elected to pass Fuentes intentionally. Then, with a count of one ball and two strikes on Dave Rader, Frisella uncorked his wild pitch, allowing Speier to score.
