Today's scores and summaries:

A's 6, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
The Athletics benefitted from two walks, a wild pitch and passed ball while scoring three runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Red Sox, 6-3. With the score tied, 2-2, Sal Bando walked and took second on a wild pitch by Lynn McGlothen. Ted Kubiak also walked and both runners then advanced on a passed ball by Carlton Fisk. Mike Hegan hit a sacrifice fly and the next three batters, Bert Campaneris, Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson, followed with singles to produce two more runs.

[DH] White Sox 2, Indians 1 (day game) / White Sox 4, Indians 3 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox scored the winning run in the ninth inning of each game to sweep a doubleheader with the Indians. 2-1 and 4-3. Alex Johnson homered off Wilbur Wood for the Indians' run in the fifth inning of the lidlifter. Dick Allen homered to tie the score in the seventh and singled with one out in the ninth. Following a sacrifice by Ed Spiezio, Gaylord Perry walked Pat Kelly intentionally and also passed Ed Herrmann to load the bases. Jay Johnstone then batted for Luis Alvarado and singled on Perry's first pitch to drive in the winning run. Carlos May won the nightcap for the White Sox by hitting his second homer of the game in the ninth inning. Ed Herrmann also homered, while the Indians had a two-run blow by Buddy Bell.

Orioles 8, Royals 4 at Kansas City (day game):
Don Baylor homered for two of the Orioles' four runs in the first inning and Terry Crowley hit the first grand slam of his major league career in the seventh to decide an 8-4 victory over the Royals. A double by Davey Johnson, walk to Elrod Hendricks and safe bunt by Mike Cuellar set the stage for Crowley's wallop off Roger Nelson.

[DH] Twins 3, Brewers 0 (day game) / Twins 6, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (day game):
Jim Perry and Jim Strickland combined on a shutout and Dave Goltz gained his first major league victory, also with Strickland relieving, as the Twins defeated the Brewers, 3-0 and 6-5. Harmon Killebrew homered for the Twins in each game. Perry, who yielded only four hits in the opener, was lifted with two men on base and one out in the ninth inning. Strickland saved the game by inducing Tommie Reynolds to ground into a double play. Goltz, called up from Tacoma (Pacific Coast), batted in a run with a single in the fourth inning and held a 4-0 lead before serving up a two-run homer by Ellie Rodriguez in the seventh. Wayne Granger finished the inning and Strickland took over in the eighth in his second relief appearance of the day. The Twins scored twice in the ninth on singles by Danny Thompson and Steve Braun, a pass to Strickland and single by Bobby Darwin. Those runs proved important when Strickland gave up a three-run homer by George Scott before ending the game.

Angels 6, Yankees 3 at New York (day game):
Starting with a three-run homer by Ken McMullen in the first inning, the Angels defeated the Yankees, 6-3. Sandy Alomar and Andy Kosco singled ahead of McMullen's drive. The Angels scored on a wild pitch by Mike Kekich in the second and added a run on a single by Alomar in the fourth before Kosco homered to complete their scoring in the fifth. Horace Clarke had four hits for the Yankees and drove in two of their runs.

Rangers 3, Tigers 1 at Texas (night game):
A double by Ted Ford was the big blow as the Rangers scored three runs in the first inning to defeat the Tigers, 3-1, behind the combined four-hit hurling of Rich Hand and Horacio Pina. Dave Nelson, leading off for the Rangers, was hit by a pitch and stole second and third. Larry Biittner walked and, with two out, Ford hit his double to drive in both runners. Joe Lovitto followed with a single to score Ford.

Braves 3, Cardinals 2 at Atlanta (day game):
Using singles instead of homers, Hank Aaron drove in all of the Braves' runs to beat the Cardinals, 3-2. Dusty Baker drew a walk in the first inning and took third on a single by Ralph Garr. After Garr stole second, Aaron sent both runners home with a single. The Cardinals bunched three singles with an error for the tying tallies in the eighth, but in the Braves' half Sonny Jackson beat out a grounder to Dal Maxvill and raced to third on a wild throw by the Cardinals' shortstop. With one out, Garr walked, bringing up Aaron, who singled to drive in Jackson with the winning run.

Astros 6, Cubs 5 at Houston (day game):
The strategy of the Cubs went awry in ninth inning when Jim Wynn beat out an infield hit with the bases loaded to drive in the run that gave the Astros a 6-5 victory. Larry Howard led off the ninth with a double and Norm Miller sacrificed pinch-runner Bobby Fenwick to third. The Cubs then had Fergie Jenkins walk both Roger Metzger and Cesar Cedeno intentionally, but Wynn wrecked the move by slashing a grounder that Don Kessinger knocked down but couldn't field in time to make a play.

Phillies 2, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Steve Carlton batted himself to his ninth straight victory with a two-run triple in the seventh inning that gave the Phillies a 2-0 edge over the Dodgers. Greg Luzinski opened the seventh with a single and yielded the paths to Bill Robinson. When Willie Montanez bunted, both runners were safe on Tommy John's late throw to second. John then struck out both Roger Freed and John Bateman before Carlton came to the plate and won his own game.

Pirates 3, Reds 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The return of Roberto Clemente, who had been out of action for two weeks with a virus attack, proved the spark that the Pirates needed to defeat the Reds, 3-2. While Clemente was sidelined, the Pirates lost five straight games to the Reds. Breaking in front, the Reds scored a run in the third inning on singles by Pete Rose and Joe Morgan and a double by Bobby Tolan. The Pirates tied the count in their half when Gene Clines doubled, advanced after a long fly by Bill Mazeroski and scored on a sacrifice fly by Clemente. An unusual error charged against Willie Stargell enabled the Reds to take the lead again in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Tolan grounded to Bob Robertson, who threw to first. Stargell took his foot off the bag before catching the ball and Tolan was called safe, a run scoring. The Pirates came back with the tying and winning tallies in the eighth. Clines led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Clemente. Stargell then made up for his error with a double that sent Clemente home.

[DH] Expos 2, Padres 1 (day game) / Expos 9, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
Getting tight pitching from Mike Torrez and Balor Moore, the Expos defeated the Padres, 2-1 and 9-1, to sweep a doubleheader for the first time since beating the Reds in a pair April 18, 1971. and for the first time on the road since taking two from the Padres April 28, 1970. Ron Hunt, who was safe on an error in the first and walked in the eighth, scored the Expos' runs in the lidlifter, crossing the plate each time on singles by Jim Fairey. Hunt set a major league record in the nightcap when hit by a pitch for 193rd time in his career. Mark Schaeffer threw the ball that struck Hunt on his left foot in the seventh inning. Bob Bailey belted a two-run homer and Tim McCarver drove in three runs with a double and single in the Expos' support of Moore, who struck out 13 batters.

Giants 5, Mets 2 at San Francisco (day game):
After being held to one hit, the Giants jumped on Tom Seaver for four runs on two homers in the fifth inning to defeat the Mets, 5-2. With two out, Ken Henderson connected for the circuit, Chris Arnold and Ron Bryant followed with singles and Bobby Bonds settled Seaver's fate with a round-tripper. Bryant gained his sixth straight victory.
