Today's scores and summaries:
Indians 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Pinch-hitter Tommy McCraw, coming to bat after a single by Frank Duffy in the ninth inning, delivered a homer to lift the Indians to a 4-3 victory over the Orioles. John Lowenstein accounted for the Indians' two earlier runs with a bases-loaded single in the first inning.
Angels 5, Rangers 0 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan did not yield a hit for 7 2/3 innings and then had to settle for a two-hitter while pitching the Angels to a 5-0 victory over the Rangers for his sixth shutout of the season. Larry Biittner doubled to wreck Ryan's bid in the eighth and Jim Mason added a single in the ninth. Billy Parker, just called up from Salt Lake City (Pacific Coast), gave Ryan enough runs to win when the rookie outfielder drove in two with a bases-loaded single in the first inning.
[DH] White Sox 7, Royals 3 (day game) / Royals 3, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
After being held hitless for 7 2/3 innings, the Royals broke the mastery of Stan Bahnsen and gained a 3-0 victory to split a doubleheader with the White Sox, who won the first game, 7-3. In the lidlifter, Dick Allen smashed two homers for the White Sox, driving in three runs, and Wilbur Wood gained his 16th victory with help from Terry Forster in the eighth inning. Steve Hovley hit a two-run homer for the Royals. Roger Nelson, who triumphed over Bahnsen in the nightcap, also broke his rival's no-hit streak. After Paul Schaal walked with one out in the eighth and was forced by Freddie Patek, Nelson singled for the Royals' first hit. Cookie Rojas followed with a single to score Patek and Hovley also singled to drive in Nelson. The Royals added another run off reliever Steve Kealey in the ninth on a double by John Mayberry and single by Schaal.
[DH] Tigers 3, Brewers 2 (night game) / Tigers 8, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Tigers, who were held to one hit until two out in the ninth inning, rallied for three runs on a homer by Norm Cash to win the first game of a doubleheader, 3-2, and then completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory over the Brewers in the second game. Bill Parsons, pitching the opener for the Brewers, had one out in the ninth when Aurelio Rodriguez was safe on an error by Mike Ferraro. Jim Northrup struck out, but Willie Horton singled and Cash followed with his winning homer. After each club had a four-run inning in the nightcap, the Brewers went ahead in the fifth on singles by Rick Auerbach and George Scott around a stolen base. Al Kaline doubled in the Tigers' eighth and, with one out, Horton was handed an intentional pass. Ike Brown singled Kaline home with the tying tally. Mickey Stanley singled to load the bases and Ed Brinkman broke the deadlock with a two-run single. The final marker then scored on an error.
Yankees 6, Red Sox 2 at New York (night game):
Sparky Lyle, relieving Fritz Peterson with two men on base and two out in the seventh inning, gained his 20th save of the season as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 6-2. Bobby Murcer led the Yankees at bat, driving in three runs with a sacrifice fly and homer. Johnny Callison also homered.
A's 4, Twins 3 at Oakland (night game):
Vida Blue pitched four-hit, scoreless ball for eight innings and then needed help from Rollie Fingers before the Athletics emerged with a 4-3 victory over the Twins. The A's scored their first three runs off Bert Blyleven and added what proved to be the deciding marker off Wayne Granger in the eighth on a single by Joe Rudi, two walks and an infield out by Sal Bando. In the ninth, the Twins rallied for three runs, two scoring on a homer by Harmon Killebrew, but Fingers came in and retired the last two batters.
Reds 8, Padres 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench and Tony Perez hit successive two-run doubles in the first inning to start the Reds off to an 8-2 victory over the Padres. Darrel Chaney provided the bulk of the hitting thereafter, driving in a run with a single in the fifth and cracking his first homer of the season with a man on base in the seventh.
Dodgers 6, Astros 3 at Houston (day game):
Three unearned runs on errors by Lee May and Cesar Cedeno in the seventh inning enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Astros, 6-3. Bill Russell was safe on a fumble by May and, after a sacrifice by Claude Osteen, scored on a single by Bill Buckner to break a 2-2 tie. Buckner stole second and scored on a single by Willie Davis, who advanced to second on a wild throw by Cedeno. Frank Robinson singled to send Davis across the plate. Cedeno homered in the eighth, but Osteen sealed his victory with his first homer of the season in the ninth inning.
Cardinals 8, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Reggie Cleveland, who won 12 games in 1971, matched that total when the Cardinals defeated the Expos, 8-2. The Cardinals put Cleveland on easy street with five runs on seven hits in the third inning.
[DH] Cubs 4, Phillies 0 (night game) / Phillies 3, Cubs 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Marking Whitey Lockman's first appearance as manager of the Cubs, succeeding Leo Durocher, Fergie Jenkins pitched a one-hitter and won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-0, but the Phillies rallied to capture the nightcap, 3-2. Willie Montanez doubled in the fourth inning for the only hit off Jenkins. The Cubs decided the outcome in the second inning with two runs on a double by Ron Santo. Billy Williams batted in the other two runs with a single in the eighth. The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap before Jack Aker failed in relief of Burt Hooton. Greg Luzinski drove in the tying runs with a triple in the eighth inning and the Phillies added the winning run in the ninth on a single by Deron Johnson, an error by Aker on a bunt by Don Money, and a single by John Bateman.
[DH] Mets 1, Pirates 0 (night game) / Pirates 7, Mets 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates, who were shut out, 1-0, in the 10-inning opener, built up a big lead in the nightcap and stood off the Mets, 7-5, to split a twi-night doubleheader. Jon Matlack pitched a four-hitter for the Mets in the lidlifter and gained the victory when the Mets scored against Nelson Briles in the 10th on a double by Cleon Jones, safe bunt by Ed Kranepool and sacrifice fly by Wayne Garrett. Willie Stargell started the Pirates' scoring in the second game with a two-run homer in the first inning. Jackie Hernandez also batted in two runs with a double and single as the Pirates increased their advantage to 7-0 before the Mets began to rally with a three-run homer by Duffy Dyer in the seventh. Ted Martinez batted in two runs in the eighth before Dave Giusti took over to record his 15th save.
