Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 at Boston (night game):
Luis Aparicio returned to the Red Sox lineup after a six-week layoff with a broken finger and drove in one run in support of Marty Pattin, who pitched a two-hitter and beat the Orioles, 2-0. The Red Sox were held hitless by Pat Dobson until the fifth inning when Carlton Fisk singled and took third on a single by Danny Cater. Fisk then scored when Aparicio forced Cater. Rico Petrocelli batted in the other run with a single in the sixth.

White Sox 3, Rangers 2 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox, continuing to enjoy success in close games, beat the Rangers, 3-2, when Dick Allen doubled to score Buddy Bradford in the ninth inning. Bradford batted for Stan Bahnsen and singled. When Pat Kelly bunted, all hands were safe on a late throw to second. Jay Johnstone, who had homered earlier in the game, failed twice to sacrifice. The White Sox then sent Rick Reichardt to bat for Johnstone. Horacio Pina replaced Paul Lindblad and threw a called strike past Reichardt for a strikeout charged to Johnstone. However, Pina was unable to handle Allen, who rapped his winning double.

Indians 1, Tigers 0 at Cleveland (night game):
The four-hit hurling of Dick Tidrow and a homer by Frank Duffy combined to give the Indians a 1-0 victory over the Tigers. The smash by Duffy in the seventh inning beat Mickey Lolich, who allowed six hits before going out for a pinch-hitter in the eighth. The shutout was the third for Tidrow in his last five starts.

Angels 6, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Enjoying his best game at bat since being acquired by the Angels, Vada Pinson collected five hits and drove in a run in the 10th inning to beat the Royals, 6-5. Leroy Stanton singled, Sandy Alomar walked and, with one out, Pinson cracked his fifth hit and batted in his third run of the game. In addition, Pinson also scored twice.

Yankees 9, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
A grand slam by Bobby Murcer in the seventh inning clinched the Yankees' 9-4 victory over the Brewers. Murcer also scored twice after reaching base on walks. The Yankees counted four times in the second on a double by Felipe Alou, pass to Murcer and four singles. Murcer walked again in the third, stole second and scored on a single by Celerino Sanchez. Hits by Fritz Peterson, Thurman Munson and Roy White loaded the bases in the seventh for Murcer's slam off Archie Reynolds.

Twins 5, A's 4 at Minnesota (night game):
A single by Rod Carew and double by Steve Braun in the seventh inning provided the deciding run for the Twins in a 5-4 victory over the Athletics. Bert Blyleven ended his personal four-game losing streak with help from Wayne Granger, who gave up a homer by Joe Rudi in the eighth.

[DH] Reds 6, Braves 5 (night game) / Reds 3, Braves 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Led by Bobby Tolan, who collected five hits in 10 trips, the Reds defeated the Braves, 6-5 and 3-2, with the first game going 11 innings. In the lidlifter, Earl Williams hit a three-run homer in the seventh to put the Braves ahead, 5-3, but the Reds picked up a run on doubles by Denis Menke and Joe Hague in the eighth and tied the score when Tolan homered in the ninth. Tolan doubled with one out in the 11th and Johnny Bench was passed intentionally. Tony Perez then forced Bench at second, but when Felix Millan threw wildly to first in an attempt to complete the double play, Tolan scored the winning run. In the nightcap, the Reds scored all their runs in the third inning on a walk to Bill Plummer, forceout by Ross Grimsley and singles by Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Tolan. Dusty Baker produced the Braves' runs with a homer in the ninth.

Padres 2, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Posting his first major league shutout, Mike Caldwell pitched the Padres to a 2-0 victory over the Dodgers. Caldwell's duel with Bill Singer was not decided until the ninth when the Padres scored their runs on doubles by Nate Colbert, Cito Gaston and Garry Jestadt.

Expos 2, Pirates 1 at Montreal (night game):
Balor Moore, the Expos' rookie lefthander, struck out Willie Stargell with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to complete a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. The Expos started the scoring with a run in the fourth on a walk to Ron Fairly, wild pitch by Bruce Kison and single by Clyde Mashore. Gene Clines tripled and Dave Cash hit a sacrifice fly for the Pirates' tying run in the sixth, but Tim McCarver provided the winning run with a homer in the Expos' half.

Mets 6, Cubs 1 at New York (night game):
Jim McAndrew pitched a three-hitter and Willie Mays drove in three runs with a homer and two singles as the Mets defeated the Cubs, 6-1. Tommie Agee also hit a homer for the Mets.

Astros 6, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Lee May smashed two homers and Johnny Edwards added one to lead the Astros' attack in a 6-1 victory over the Giants. May also doubled and scored the Astros' first run on a single by Bob Watson in the second inning. May's homers in the fourth and sixth came off Juan Marichal. Edwards socked his off Don McMahon in the ninth.

Phillies 8, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Don Durham homered with two men on base for his first major league hit, but the Cardinals' rookie righthander was knocked out in the eighth inning and lost to the Phillies, 8-3. Durham, failing to protect a 3-2 lead, walked Oscar Gamble to open the eighth. Denny Doyle followed with a single. When Larry Bowa bunted, Durham threw late to third and all runners were safe, loading the bases. Tommy Hutton, who had knocked in two earlier runs with a sacrifice fly and infield out, made it four RBIs for the night with a single to send the Phillies ahead. Other runs followed on a single by Willie Montanez, triple by Don Money and single by Bill Robinson.
