Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Indians 1 at Boston (night game):
Marty Pattin pitched a five-hitter and emerged as the winner in a duel with Dick Tidrow when the Red Sox scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Indians, 4-1. A double by Rick Miller, sacrifice by Pattin and single by Doug Griffin provided a run to break a 1-1 tie. The Red Sox then added two more tallies to clinch the decision on a single by Luis Aparicio, sacrifice fly by Carl Yastrzemski and single by Rico Petrocelli.

White Sox 4, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Leo Cardenas' failure to tag second base as the middleman on an attempted double play enabled the White Sox to defeat the Angels, 4-3. After getting a 1-0 lead on a homer by Jay Johnstone in the third, the White Sox loaded the bases in the eighth on a single by Stan Bahnsen, an error on a bunt by pat Kelly, a sacrifice and intentional pass to Dick Allen. Carlos May then grounded to Sandy Alomar, who threw to Cardenas, apparently forcing Allen. Cardenas' relay to Bob Oliver retired May for what should have been the third out. However, base umpire Merle Anthony ruled Cardenas had missed touching second base and Allen was safe. Buddy Bradford, running for Bahnsen, scored on the play and when Oliver, thinking the inning was over, tossed the ball toward the pitcher's mound, Kelly also counted what proved to be the winning run.

Royals 4, A's 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Freddie Patek scored the tying run in the eighth inning and drove in the winning run in the ninth as the Royals defeated the Athletics, 4-3. After the Royals took the lead with two unearned runs, the A's bunched three singles, an infield out and triple by Gene Tenace to go ahead in the fourth. Patek singled in the eighth, took second on a sacrifice, moved to third on an infield hit by Cookie Rojas and scored on a grounder by Amos Otis. In the ninth, Richie Scheinblum singled. Pinch-runner Steve Hovley advanced to second on an infield out. After an intentional pass to Lou Piniella, Paul Schaal struck out, but Patek came through with his winning single.

Orioles 4, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Boog Powell collected four hits in four trips, including a homer, and drove in all of the Orioles' runs in a 4-2 victory over the Brewers. Singles by Paul Blair, Bobby Grich and Powell produced the initial tally in the first inning. Then, in the third, after Don Buford beat out a bunt and Blair walked, Powell smashed his homer.

Twins 6, Rangers 5 at Minnesota (night game):
Pinch-hitting with two out, Dan Monzon drove in a run with a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning to give the Twins a 6-5 victory over the Rangers. Dick Billings batted in four runs for the Rangers with two doubles and a triple and Ted Ford homered in the ninth to tie the score. Singles by Steve Braun, Bobby Darwin and Glenn Borgmann loaded the bases for the Twins in the 10th before Monzon delivered his winning hit.

Yankees 4, Tigers 2 at New York (day game):
Taking advantage of an error by Mickey Lolich, the Yankees broke a tie with two unearned runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Tigers, 4-2. Thurman Munson opened with a single and when Roy White bunted, both runners were safe on Lolich's fumble. Felipe Alou was hit by a pitch, filling the bases. Bobby Murcer went out on a short fly, but Celerino Sanchez then hit a longer fly to center and Munson scored after the catch. Ron Swoboda followed with a single to drive in White with an extra run.

Braves 8, Astros 4 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves gained their first victory under Eddie Mathews as new manager and Denny McLain turned in his first complete game in an Atlanta uniform to defeat the Astros, 8-4. The Braves staked McLain to a five-run lead in the first inning with the help of Don Wilson's wildness. Ralph Garr opened with a double and after walks to Darrell Evans and Hank Aaron loaded the bases, both Garr and Evans scored on wild pitches. Dusty Baker homered for two more runs and another marker counted before the inning ended on a walk, error and single by Marty Perez.

Cubs 6, Expos 5 at Chicago (day game):
Fergie Jenkins complained of tenderness in the bicep of his pitching arm and left the mound after 6 2/3 innings, but the Cubs' ace righthander received credit for an 8-5 victory over the Expos. Jim Hickman drove in two runs for the Cubs with a homer in the first inning and added an RBI with a single in the third. Jenkins homered in the fifth. After Jenkins left the mound with a 4-2 lead, Billy Williams homered with a man on base in the Cubs' half of the seventh. The Expos erupted for three runs against Steve Hamilton in the eighth before Jack Aker came in to save the game.

Reds 2, Dodgers 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
The longest game in N. L. this season ended in the 19th inning after four hours, 17 minutes when Denis Menke doubled and Ted Uhlaender, taking over as the runner, scored on a pinch-single by Joe Hague to bring the Reds a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers. The only Dodger run scored in the sixth on a walk to Manny Mota and singles by Wes Parker and Frank Robinson. The Reds tied the score in their half on passes to Pete Rose and Joe Morgan and a single by Bobby Tolan. The Dodgers used five pitchers and the first four -- Tommy John, Jim Brewer, Pete Richert and Ron Perranoski -- struck out 22 batters among them, tying the league record for an extra-inning game.

Pirates 4, Phillies 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell, who singled and scored in the second inning, smashed a three-run homer in the third to power the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Phillies behind the three-hit hurling of Dock Ellis.

[DH] Giants 15, Padres 4 (night game) / Giants 7, Padres 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants, who piled up their highest hit and run totals of the season in winning the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 15-4, completed the sweep by also beating the Padres in the second game, 7-3. The Giants collected 16 safeties in the opener, with every starting player having at least one hit and one RBI. However, the only homers of the game were whacked by Derrel Thomas and Fred Kendall of the Padres. The Giants turned to the long ball in the nightcap with a three-run homer by Ed Goodson and a homer, two doubles and a single by Ken Henderson. Dave Roberts and Curt Blefary homered for the Padres.

Cardinals 6, Mets 5 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals, after failing to hold a 4-0 lead, came back to beat the Mets, 6-5, when Matty Alou singled and Luis Melendez homered in the eighth inning.
