Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Leading off in the ninth inning, Bobby Grich hit a homer to bring the Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. Terry Crowley also homered for the Orioles to account for their first run in the second. The Red Sox tied the score with singles by Luis Aparicio, Carl Yastrzemski and Rico Petrocelli in the eighth.

Angels 3, Twins 1 at California (night game):
Clyde Wright pitched a five-hitter and also sent the Angels ahead with a single in the seventh inning to beat the Twins, 3-1. The Twins' run in the fifth counted without the benefit of a hit on a walk to Steve Brye, an infield out and a wild throw by Ken McMullen on a grounder by Jim Perry. Doubles by Sandy Alomar and Vada Pinson tied the score in the sixth. McMullen beat out an infield hit in the seventh, John Stephenson singled and Wright then drove McMullen home with a single to break the tie. A squeeze bunt by Alomar added an extra run.

Indians 5, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers, who had been leading the East division since July 10, lost to the Indians, 5-1, and surrendered first place to the Orioles. Steve Dunning, pitching for the Indians, turned in his first complete game since being recalled from the minors and missed a shutout only on a homer by Mickey Stanley in the ninth inning. John Hiller, making his first start for the Tigers since suffering a heart attack in January, 1971, was the victim of three unearned runs in the first and drew the defeat. Buddy Bell, who had four hits in the game, led off with a single and Jack Brohamer followed with another single. Hiller retired the next two batters, but Gates Brown then erred on a line drive by Ray Fosse, allowing one run to score, and Graig Nettles followed with a single to drive in two more tallies.

Brewers 4, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
A triple and homer by George Scott were the Brewers' big blows in a 4-2 victory over the Yankees. After Rick Auerbach was safe on an error in the first inning, Scott drove him in with a triple and scored himself on a single by Ollie Brown. Scott socked his homer in the sixth. Auerbach batted in an extra run in the seventh.

White Sox 1, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Completing the previous night's game, which was suspended by curfew after 17 innings with a 3-3 score, the Athletics gained a 5-3 victory on a two-run homer by Joe Rudi in the 19th, but the White Sox came back to win the regularly-scheduled contest, 1-0, behind the two-hit pitching of Dave Lemonds and Cy Acosta. Catfish Hunter was the winner of the completed game and the loser of the contest that followed. When play resumed in the suspended game, Hunter took the mound as the A's eighth pitcher against Stan Bahnsen, who was the seventh hurler used by the White Sox. In the 19th, Bert Campaneris beat out a bunt and George Hendrick sacrificed. With first base open, the White Sox chose to pitch to Rudi, who showed it was a mistake by smashing his game-winning homer. Pat Kelly opened the regularly-scheduled contest with a single, stole second and scored the game's only run on a two-out single by Carlos May.

Royals 2, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
The three-hit pitching of Dave Nelson, plus homers by Richie Scheinblum and Amos Otis, gave the Royals a 2-0 victory over the Rangers. Rich Hand, who pitched eight innings for the Rangers, also gave up only three hits, but they included Scheinblum's smash in the fourth. Otis homered off Horacio Pina in the ninth.

Braves 7, Reds 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Sparked by Jim Breazeale, who hit a pinch-homer with two men on base, the Braves exploded for five runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Reds, 7-5. Felix Millan walked and Marty Perez singled before Breazeale tied the score at 5-5 with his blast on the first pitch thrown by Clay Carroll in relief of Ed Sprague. Ralph Garr followed with a single, Hank Aaron walked and Earl Williams and Dusty Baker each hit run-scoring singles to provide the Braves' winning margin.

Cubs 7, Mets 2 at Chicago (day game):
In an all-round performance, Milt Pappas drove in five runs with a single, double and homer while pitching the Cubs to a 7-2 victory over the Mets.

Astros 6, Giants 3 at Houston (night game):
Although tagged for 10 hits, Larry Dierker lasted the route and pitched the Astros to a 6-3 victory over the Giants. The Astros made it possible for Dierker to survive by piling up five runs in the second inning. A walk to Doug Rader, double by Tommy Helms and single by Roger Metzger accounted for the first two tallies. Metzger, who took second on the throw to the plate, scored on a single by Cesar Cedeno. After stealing second, Cedeno also counted on a single by Lee May. Bob Watson and Johnny Edwards followed with singles to drive in May with the fifth run. Jim Wynn homered for the Astros' final tally in the fourth. Ken Henderson hit a two-run homer for the Giants in the eighth.

Expos 4, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
In addition to pitching a three-hitter, Mike Torrez broke a tie with a single in the eighth inning to lead the Expos to a 4-1 victory over the Phillies. Ken Singleton walked and Ron Fairly doubled for the Expos' initial run in the first. Don Money homered to tie the score in the second. With two out in the eighth, Bob Bailey, Tim Foli and Torrez singled to produce the Expos' go-ahead run. When Deron Johnson, as the cutoff man, threw wildly to third, Foli also scored. Ron Hunt followed with a single to drive in Torrez with the final run.

Pirates 10, Cardinals 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Richie Hebner homered with a man on base in the first inning and wound up the scoring with a solo swat in the eighth to complete the Pirates' 10-5 victory over the Cardinals. Gene Clines also drove in three runs for the Pirates with a pair of singles. In the fourth, Clines came up with the bases loaded and cracked a two-run single that wound up in a double play. Clines, trying to advance on his hit, was thrown out at second and Vic Davalillo, who overran third, was caught trying to return to the bag.

Dodgers 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Wes Parker singled with two out in the 10th inning for his fourth hit of the game and drove in Lee Lacy to give the Dodgers a 2-1 victory over the Padres. Garry Jestadt homered for the Padres' run in the second and the Dodgers tied the score with singles by Parker, Bobby Valentine and Bill Russell in the fourth. Lee Lacy beat out an infield hit in the 10th and Willie Davis sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Manny Mota, Frank Robinson fouled out, but Parker then came through with his deciding single.
