A's 5, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Mike Epstein and Joe Rudi hit homers and Bert Campaneris singled twice, stole three bases and scored two runs to lead the Athletics to a 5-2 victory over the Orioles. Ken Holtzman, who started for the A's, was knocked out in the fifth inning when the Orioles scored their runs on a homer by Davey Johnson, double by Chico Salmon and singles by Paul Blair and Bobby Grich. Rollie Fingers relieved, cut off further scoring and checked the Orioles on two hits the rest of the way to gain credit for the victory.
Royals 3, Yankees 0 at Kansas City (night game):
While Bruce Dal Canton and Norm Angelini combined on a shutout, the Royals scored three unearned runs and defeated the Yankees, 3-0. Paul Schaal was safe on an error by Gene Michael in the third inning and Bobby Floyd singled. Then, after two outs, infield hits by Cookie Rojas and Richie Scheinblum produced two runs. Dal Canton reached base on an error by Horace Clarke in the seventh and counted on singles by Steve Hovley and Lou Piniella. Dal Canton allowed only two hits until Clarke and Thurman Munson singled with one out in the ninth. Angelini relieved and ended the threat to record his first major league save.
Reds 12, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Johnny Bench batted in five runs and Pete Rose drove in three as the Reds whipped the Braves, 12-2. Bench homered with a man on base in the first inning, added an RBI with a single in the sixth and wound up his production with a two-run double in the seventh. Rose knocked in two runs with a single in the sixth and one more with a double in the seventh.
Astros 7, Giants 5 at Houston (night game):
The Astros, who were trailing 5-0 after three innings, rallied to defeat the Giants, 7-5. The Giants' scoring included a homer by Bobby Bonds. The Astros began their comeback with three runs in the fourth on singles by Bob Watson, Tommy Helms and Norm Miller and a double by Roger Metzger. Then, in the sixth, after the Astros loaded the bases on two walks around a single by Helms, Cesar Cedeno drove in two runs with a single to tie the score. Jim Wynn followed with a single for another run to send the Astros ahead and the final marker followed when Cedeno scored on a wild pitch.
