Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 2, Brewers 1 at Chicago (night game):
Picked off first, Dick Allen reached second successfully with a stolen base to set up the run that enabled the White Sox to defeat the Brewers, 2-1. Mike Andrews opened the fourth inning with a homer and Allen walked. When Allen broke too soon off first with the idea of stealing second, Bill Parsons threw to George Scott. Allen kept going and not only beat Scott's throw to second but continued to third when the ball got through Rick Auerbach. Rick Reichardt then singled to score Allen. The Brewers got their run on doubles by Joe Lahoud and Mike Ferraro in the fifth.
Indians 4, Angels 3 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians overcame the batting of Bob Oliver and defeated the Angels, 4-3, in 10 innings. Oliver drove in all of the Angels' runs with two doubles and a single. After his single sent the Angels ahead, 3-2, in the top half of the 10th, the Indians opened a rally in their half with a single by Buddy Bell, who had homered earlier in the game. Jack Brohamer bunted and both runners were safe on a late throw to second. Ray Fosse singled to load the bases. Bell scored the tying run on a wild pitch by Steve Barber. After an intentional pass to Alex Johnson, the next two batters went out, but Frank Duffy then singled to drive in the winning run.
Twins 7, Tigers 6 at Detroit (night game):
Run-scoring singles by Jim Nettles and Rod Carew in the 13th inning enabled the Twins to brush off a homer by Gates Brown and defeat the Tigers, 7-6. Mickey Stanley hit a three-run homer in the sixth and drove in another run with a single in the seventh to pace the Tigers to a 5-4 lead, but the Twins tied the score in the ninth with singles by Steve Braun, Harmon Killebrew and Rich Reese. Glenn Borgmann singled in the 13th, Dave LaRoche walked and Nettles singled to score Borgmann. Carew followed with a single to plate LaRoche and that run proved decisive when Brown hit his homer in the Tigers' half.
Royals 7, Yankees 6 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals, after failing to hold a 4-0 lead, came from behind with a three-run rally in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees, 7-6. Paul Schaal homered for three of the Royals' four runs in the first. The Yankees tied the score in the seventh, three of their runs coming on a pinch-homer by Felipe Alou, and went ahead with two runs in the ninth. In the Royals' rally, Amos Otis and Carl Taylor singled, Freddie Patek sacrificed and Steve Hovley knotted the count with a single. After another sacrifice by Richie Scheinblum, Lou Piniella delivered the game-winning single.
Red Sox 3, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
The pitching of John Curtis and batting of Reggie Smith brought the Red Sox a 3-0 victory over the Rangers. Curtis allowed only three hits, while Smith accounted for all runs with two homers.
Dodgers 8, Pirates 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
Hot-hitting Willie Davis smashed a two-run homer in the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie and supply the Dodgers' winning margin in an 8-6 victory over the Pirates. A double by Bruce Kison and single by Rennie Stennett each drove in two runs to give the Pirates a 4-2 lead in the second and Richie Hebner homered in fourth, but the Dodgers came back with a four-run outburst in their half of the fourth, including a sacrifice fly by Davis. After the Pirates pulled even with a run in the fifth, Bill Buckner singled for the Dodgers in the sixth and Davis hit his deciding homer.
Expos 3, Astros 2 at Montreal (night game):
Ken Singleton crossed the plate with his third run of the game in the 10th inning to bring the Expos a 3-2 victory over the Astros. After hitting singles and scoring in the fourth and eighth, Singleton walked with one out in the 10th. Mike Marshall also drew a pass with two away and Mike Jorgensen followed with a single to drive in Singleton with the winning run.
Mets 5, Braves 0 at New York (night game):
Jim McAndrew and Tug McGraw combined on a five-hitter and pitched the Mets to a 5-0 victory over the Braves. Ed Kranepool and Tommie Agee each drove in two runs, Kranepool with a homer and single and Agee with a homer.
Reds 3, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Flashing his 1971 form, Don Gullett pitched eight innings of relief, allowed only four hits and was the winner when the Reds defeated the Phillies, 3-0. Wayne Simpson started for the Reds but reinjured his leg and was forced to quit the mound after one inning. Gullett suffered from hepatitis early in the year and, for the first time since then, showed he possibly had regained his strength. The Reds scored their initial run in the first on a walk to Pete Rose and singles by Johnny Bench and Tony Perez. Other tallies followed in the fifth on a single by Rose, walk to Joe Morgan, single by Bobby Tolan and a wild pickoff throw to first base by Wayne Twitchell.
Padres 7, Cardinals 1 at San Diego (night game):
Mike Caldwell yielded only six hits and was the winner when the Padres piled up 11 hits to defeat the Cardinals, 7-1. The Padres decided the outcome in the fourth inning with three runs on a triple by Nate Colbert, single by Cito Gaston and homer by Fred Kendall.
Giants 7, Cubs 5 at San Francisco (night game):
Garry Maddox drove in six runs with two homers, including the first grand slam of his major league career, to power the Giants to a 7-5 victory over the Cubs. The rookie outfielder's slugging helped Juan Marichal to enter the winning column for the first time since July 14 and only the fifth time this season. Ken Henderson homered for the Giants' first run in the fourth inning before Maddox swung into action with a two-run blast in fifth and his grand slam following two walks around single by Dave Rader in the sixth. Don Kessinger and Jim Hickman hit homers for the Cubs.
