A's 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Bert Campaneris, Angel Mangual and Mike Epstein smashed homers and Bert Campaneris also singled and scored another run as the Athletics defeated the Orioles, 4-3. Campaneris connected for the circuit in the first inning and then singled in the fifth, advanced on a sacrifice, stole third and counted on a sacrifice fly by Sal Bando. Mangual homered in the seventh and Epstein broke a 3-3 tie with his round-tripper in the eighth.

White Sox 8, Brewers 6 at Chicago (day game):
Although knocked out in the seventh inning, Wilbur Wood gained his 21st victory when the White Sox defeated the Brewers, 8-6. Wood gave up 10 hits and was charged with five of the Brewers' runs. Luis Alvarado hit an inside-park homer for the White Sox with two men on base in the second inning. A single by Walt Williams, pass to Dick Allen, triple by Rick Reichardt and double by Carlos May added three runs in the third and the deciding pair followed in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Ed Herrmann walked and Earl Stephenson threw late to second on a grounder by Alvarado. Passes to Williams and Mike Andrews forced in one run and the other counted on a grounder by Muser as Alvarado beat the throw to the plate.

Angels 2, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Ken McMullen extended his batting streak to 17 games with a run-scoring single in the ninth inning that gave the Angels a 2-1 victory over the Indians. Vada Pinson singled and Bob Oliver walked ahead of McMullen's winning hit.

Royals 3, Yankees 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Completing a sweep of the three-game series, the Royals defeated the Yankees, 3-2, scoring their winning run in the seventh inning when Cookie Rojas doubled and John Mayberry singled. Bobby Murcer hit a single, double and homer for the Yanks.

Rangers 9, Red Sox 8 at Texas (night game):
A homer by Tom Grieve with two out in the 10th inning carried the Rangers to a 9-8 victory over the Red Sox, who wasted a grand slam by Reggie Smith. The Red Sox loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Danny Cater, double by John Kennedy and pass to Luis Aparicio. Carl Yastrzemski then walked to force in one run before Smith hit his jackpot wallop off Rich Hand.

Pirates 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
After being shut out on four hits for eight innings, the Pirates exploded in the ninth to defeat the Dodgers, 3-2. Willie Davis drove in the Dodgers' runs with a double in the third. Dave Cash opened the Pirates' ninth with a double and scored on a single by Al Oliver. Willie Stargell then came to the plate and smashed a homer for the Pirates' winning blow.

Astros 5, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
While Don Wilson pitched a five-hitter, Bob Watson, Johnny Edwards and Doug Rader divided seven hits among them and batted the Astros to a 5-0 victory over the Expos. Watson and Edwards each drove in two runs and Rader accounted for the other one in the scoring against Mike Torrez.

Braves 3, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Hank Aaron hit his 25th homer of the season and 664th of his career to provide the Braves' clinching run in the eighth inning of a 3-1 victory over the Mets. The Braves' two other tallies counted in the sixth on singles by Ralph Garr and Darrell Evans, a pass to Aaron, forceout of Aaron by Earl Williams on which Garr scored and single by Dusty Baker.

Reds 8, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Still without a victory this season, Ken Reynolds absorbed his 10th defeat when the Reds beat the Phillies, 8-2. Tony Perez led the Reds at bat, driving in four runs with a homer, double and single. Pete Rose collected four singles.

Cardinals 6, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
Bob Gibson, who pitched complete games in 11 of his previous 12 victories, needed help from Diego Segui to nail down No. 13 as the Cardinals defeated the Padres, 6-4. Luis Melendez homered with a man on base for the Cards. The Padres had round-trippers by Nate Colbert and Derrel Thomas. Segui replaced Gibson with two men on base and one out in the eighth inning and put down the Padres' threat.

Giants 14, Cubs 9 at San Francisco (day game):
Ken Henderson batted in five runs and Tito Fuentes accounted for four RBIs to lead the Giants' attack in a 14-9 victory over the Cubs. The Giants piled up 20 hits, including a homer, double and two singles by Henderson and three singles by Fuentes. Dave Rader contributed a double and two singles, driving in two runs.
