Today's scores and summaries:
Twins 3, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles, collecting only five hits off Dick Woodson, lost to the Twins, 3-1, and surrendered first place in the East division to the Tigers. Woodson also scored the run that broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning. Glenn Borgmann singled and was forced by Woodson, who completed his journey around the bases on singles by Steve Brye and Rod Carew.
White Sox 8, Red Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox piled up 16 hits, their highest total of the season, and defeated the Red Sox, 8-1. The attack included three-run homers by Dick Allen and Jay Johnstone. Stan Bahnsen held the Red Sox to four hits before the hot, humid weather forced him off the mound in the eighth inning. Terry Forster finished.
A's 8, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Blue Moon Odom allowed only four hits and pitched the Athletics to an 8-0 victory over the Indians. Sal Bando and Bert Campaneris each belted a two-run homer off Gaylord Perry, who failed for the fourth time in a bid for his 19th victory. After Perry departed, Mike Hegan homered off Ray Lamb in the seventh inning, Dave Duncan doubled and Campaneris singled for his third RBI of the game. Tim Cullen doubled with the bases loaded for the A's final two runs off Steve Mingori in the eighth.
Tigers 2, Angels 0 at Detroit (night game):
Mickey Lolich pitched the Tigers into first place in the East division, ahead of the Orioles, by defeating the Angels, 2-0, for his 19th victory. Nolan Ryan, who was the loser, set the California club record for strikeouts by fanning five to bring his total to 212, one more than Andy Messersmith's previous mark in 1970. Mickey Stanley batted in the Tigers' first run with a double in the second inning and Duke Sims walked with the bases loaded in the third.
Brewers 7, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
A special night in honor of Ewing and Muriel Kauffman was spoiled for the Royals' owners when their club lost to the Brewers, 7-2. The Brewers decided the game with four runs on six singles in the fourth inning. The Royals failed to take advantage of their scoring chances and left 15 men on base.
Rangers 11, Yankees 2 at Texas (night game):
Capping their attack with a homer by Dick Billings, the Rangers erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to clinch an 11-2 victory over the Yankees. The first four runs in the outburst scored on six singles before Billings came to the plate and connected for the circuit with two men on base.
Cubs 5, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Although tagged for nine hits, Fergie Jenkins was able to pitch the Cubs to a 5-0 victory over the Dodgers. Bill Singer helped heat himself by issuing four walks in the first inning. After the first two passes to Jose Cardenal and Billy Williams, Ron Santo singled for one run and another was forced home when Singer also walked Rick Monday and Paul Popovich.
Expos 4, Braves 3 at Montreal (night game):
Mike Marshall, pitching 3 1/3 innings, gained his 13th victory, all in relief, when Bob Bailey drove in a run with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th to defeat the Braves, 4-3. Ken Singleton, who had homered earlier in the game, walked to lead off the 11th and Ron Fairly sacrificed. A single by John Boccabella and intentional pass to Mike Jorgensen filled the sacks. Joe Hoerner relieved Pat Jarvis and struck out Clyde Mashore. Cecil Upshaw then took over and, with a 3-and-2 count, Bailey hit a soft tap down the third base line and beat it out for a hit.
Reds 8, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
The Reds ripped into Jerry Koosman for five runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Mets, 8-2. Joe Morgan was hit by a pitch to start the stanza, took third on a single by Bobby Tolan and scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnny Bench. After Tony Perez walked, Denis Menke and Dave Concepcion hit run-scoring singles. Bill Plummer laid down a squeeze bunt to plate the fourth tally and the final run of the frame counted on a single by Pete Rose. Willie Mays hit his eighth homer for the Mets and 654th of his career.
Astros 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Astros were held to seven hits, but used six of them in their scoring to gain a 4-3 victory over the Phillies, who collected 10 hits but counted only on homers by Larry Bowa, Deron Johnson and John Bateman. The Astros bunched a single by Doug Rader, double by Tommy Helms, single by Dave Roberts and double by Jim Wynn for three runs in the fifth inning and added their deciding tally when Bob Watson and Johnny Edwards singled in the sixth and Rader hit a sacrifice fly.
Pirates 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
After giving up three singles in the first inning, Steve Blass yielded only one more hit the rest of the way and pitched the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Padres. Singles by Nate Colbert, Derrel Thomas and Fred Kendall, together with a walk and error, gave the Padres their runs in the first. The Pirates tied the score in the fourth and then posted their winning runs in the eighth when Blass was safe on an error and Vic Davalillo, Dave Cash and Al Oliver followed with singles.
Cardinals 3, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
After five straight losses, Don Durham gained his first major league victory for the Cardinals by defeating the Giants, 3-1 with the help of his own bat and relief assistance of Diego Segui. Durham singled and scored in the third inning and hit a homer in the fifth to beat Jim Willoughby, who suffered his first major league defeat after two victories.
