Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 4, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A homer by Bobby Darwin with two men on base in the first inning started the Twins off to a 4-1 victory over the Orioles behind the four-hit hurling of Ray Corbin. Terry Crowley homered for the Orioles to ruin Corbin's shutout bid.

[DH] White Sox 9, Red Sox 7 (day game) / Red Sox 5, White Sox 4 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox, who staged a dramatic ninth-inning rally to win the first game of a doubleheader, 9-7, moved into a first-place tie with the Athletics in West division, although losing the second game to the Red Sox, 5-4. The White Sox led in the opener, 5-1, before the Red Sox scored three runs off Wilbur Wood in the eighth and three off Terry Forster in the ninth. The White Sox began their rally with a single by Rich Morales and walk to Ed Spiezio. After the next two batters went out, Walt Williams drove in one run with a single and Pat Kelly followed with the winning three-run homer. In the nightcap, the Red Sox broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run outburst in the fifth. Singles by Bob Montgomery, John Curtis and Tommy Harper produced the first run and, after John Kennedy walked, Carl Yastrzemski cleared the bases with a triple.

Indians 3, A's 1 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians scored three runs in the first two innings and that was enough for Dick Tidrow, who posted a 3-1 victory to drop the Athletics into a first-place tie with the White Sox in the West division race. A walk to Eddie Leon and double by Alex Johnson accounted for the Indians' initial tally in the first. The two other runs in the second resulted from a walk to Ray Fosse, single by Roy Foster, double by Graig Nettles and sacrifice fly by Frank Duffy.

Tigers 11, Angels 9 at Detroit (day game):
The Angels erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead, but the Tigers came back with an eight-run rally in the sixth to win a wild game, 11-9. The Angels sent 13 men to the plate in their outburst. Vada Pinson ignited the explosion with a homer and was hit by a pitch on his second trip to the plate. The Angels also collected eight singles, including two each by Sandy Alomar and Chris Coletta, plus a walk, before their spree subsided. Aurelio Rodriguez touched off the Tigers' comeback in the sixth with a double and capped the rally with a two-run homer. In between, the Tigers rapped six singles and a sacrifice fly.

Brewers 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Syd O'Brien and Johnny Briggs rapped run-scoring singles to enable the Brewers to defeat the Royals, 2-1. In the third inning, Ellie Rodriguez singled and was forced by Bob Heise. Rick Auerbach singled Heise to third and O'Brien sent him home with his hit. Auerbach was safe on an error in the eighth, stole second and crossed the plate on Briggs' single. John Mayberry doubled and Cookie Rojas singled for the Royals' run in the home half of the eighth.

Yankees 2, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
Continuing his sensational relief work, Sparky Lyle gained a victory and also scored the first run as the Yankees defeated the Rangers, 2-0, in 10 innings. Rob Gardner hurled the first seven innings for the Yankees and allowed only three hits before going out for a pinch-batter. Lyle yielded three more hits in next three stanzas. In the 10th, Lyle led off with a single. Horace Clarke was hit by a pitch and Thurman Munson sacrificed. Bobby Murcer then grounded to Frank Howard and when the first baseman threw wildly to the plate, Lyle scored. Roy White followed with a single to drive in Clarke with another run.

Cubs 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (day game):
Jim Hickman homered with a man on base in the first inning and Billy Williams and Ron Santo each hit a run-producing single in the third to lead the Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers. After Hickman's homer, the Dodgers came back with two in their half on a single by Bill Buckner, pass to Wes Parker and double by Willie Crawford. However, in the third, Paul Popovich singled, took second on an infield out and scored on a single by Williams. After a walk to Hickman, Santo singled to drive in Williams.

Expos 1, Braves 0 at Montreal (day game):

Reds 8, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
Taking advantage of three errors, the Reds scored six runs in the seventh inning to clinch an 8-1 victory over the Mets. McAndrew hurt his knee on the play and left the game in favor of Ray Sadecki. Bill Plummer bunted and all hands were safe on Sadecki's late throw to third. Lute Barnes booted a grounder by Don Gullett, allowing a run to score. Two more counted on a single by Pete Rose. Jim Beauchamp fielded a grounder by Joe Morgan and made a bad throw home as another run scored. A sacrifice fly by Tony Perez and double by Denis Menke added two more tallies before Danny Frisella was able to end the inning.
