Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Angels 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Pat Dobson pitched a three-hitter and Boog Powell smashed a two-run homer to provide the Orioles with a 3-1 victory over the Angels.
Indians 10, Twins 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Homers by Jack Brohamer, Buddy Bell, Alex Johnson and Graig Nettles powered the Indians to a 10-3 victory over the Twins. Brohamer hit his homer with a man on base in the second inning. Bell and Johnson rapped their round-trippers in the fourth and Nettles added his circuit clout in the sixth. Johnson also drove in two runs with a single in the first inning.
A's 5, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Athletics moved back into first place in the West division, breaking a tie with the idle White Sox, by defeating the Tigers, 5-1. The A's jumped on Woodie Fryman for three runs in the first inning and handed the lefthander his first A. L. loss. Bert Campaneris doubled, stole third and scored on a single by Joe Rudi. Sal Bando also singled and Mike Epstein then drove both runners home with a double.
Cardinals 4, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bob Gibson pitched the Cardinals to a 4-0 victory for his second shutout of the Dodgers by that score in Los Angeles this season. Gibson previously blanked the Dodgers June 4. The Cardinals' attack included a homer by Bernie Carbo.
Reds 4, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Reserve catcher Bill Plummer, filling in for Johnny Bench who was out with an injured finger, drove in two runs with a single to help the Reds defeat the Expos, 4-1. Joe Morgan homered for the Reds in the first inning and Plummer added his pair in the fifth after a single by Denis Menke, forceout by Cesar Geronimo, single by Darrel Chaney and passed ball by Tim McCarver. Tony Perez doubled and Menke singled for another run in the sixth. Mike Jorgensen homered in the ninth to prevent an Expos' shutout.
Mets 4, Astros 2 at New York (night game):
Jim Beauchamp celebrated his 33rd birthday with his first two homers of the season, including a smash with a man on base and two out in the ninth inning to carry the Mets to a 4-2 victory over the Astros. Cesar Cedeno batted in both Astro runs with a homer and double. Beauchamp, who first hit for the circuit in the seventh inning, delivered his winning blow in the ninth after a pass to John Milner.
Braves 2, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton's string of 15 consecutive victories was snapped when the Braves scored in the 11th inning to defeat the Phillies' southpaw, 2-1, before a crowd of 41,212. The Braves, who had been held scoreless for 20 consecutive innings, ended their drouth with a run off Carlton in the third on a two-out double by Felix Millan and single by Hank Aaron. The Phillies tied the score against Phil Niekro with doubles by Willie Montanez and Greg Luzinski in the eighth but then failed to score again after loading the bases. Tommy Hutton struck out, but Don Money was safe on an error. Bill Robinson flied to right field and Luzinski held third while Money advanced to second after the catch. Niekro passed John Bateman intentionally to load the bases and pitched out of the jam by getting Carlton on a pop fly. Carlton disposed of Millan and Aaron to open the 11th, giving him a string of 19 batters retired in a row. However, Dusty Baker doubled and, after an intentional pass to Earl Williams, Mike Lum singled to drive in the Braves' winning run and hand Carlton his first defeat since losing to the Mets on May 30.
Padres 6, Cubs 5 at San Diego (night game):
Although Joe Pepitone, Ron Santo and Billy Williams homered for the Cubs, Johnny Jeter came up with a more dramatic blow when the Padres rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to gain a 6-5 victory. Pepitone and Santo hit their homers in succession in the fourth. After Cito Gaston doubled in two runs to tie the score in the seventh, Williams hit a three-run homer for the Cubs in the ninth. The Padres started their rally when Dave Roberts and Cito Gaston singled and Derrel Thomas walked to load the bases with one away. Roberts scored on an infield out by Fred Kendall. Jeter then came to the plate and smashed his homer for three runs to give the Padres their victory.
