Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 2, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Nolan Ryan, who had gone without a victory since July 27, ended his personal four-game losing streak by pitching the Angels past the Orioles, 2-0. The shutout was Ryan's seventh of the season. Bob Oliver had a hand in both runs, lofting a sacrifice fly after a triple by Sandy Alomar in the third inning and then hitting a double and scoring on a two-bagger by Ken McMullen in the seventh.

White Sox 5, Yankees 4 at Chicago (night game):
Down by four runs after two innings, the White Sox came back to defeat the Yankees, 5-4. The White Sox trimmed their deficit to one run by scoring three times in the third on singles by Chuck Brinkman and Walt Williams, a double by Buddy Bradford and single by Mike Andrews. Then, in the fifth, after Bradford singled, Dick Allen provided the winning blow with a homer.

Indians 3, Twins 2 at Cleveland (night game):
A defensive change made by the Indians, who sent Tommy McCraw into the outfield in place of Alex Johnson, paid unexpected dividends in the ninth when McCraw drove in a run with a single to beat the Twins, 3-2. As a result, Gaylord Perry gained his 19th victory in his fifth try. Frank Duffy batted in the Indians' first two runs, but the Twins tied the score with homers by Jim Nettles and Bobby Darwin. Buddy Bell singled with one out in the Indians' ninth and Jack Brohamer walked. Following a forceout by Chris Chambliss, McCraw lined a single for his second hit since taking Johnson's place.

A's 6, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Mickey Lolich's bid for his 20th victory was wrecked by three homers as the Athletics defeated the Tigers, 6-3. Joe Rudi started the slugging with a two-run smash in the first inning. Blue Moon Odom, the A's winner, aided his own cause with a solo swat in the third and the A's then completed their scoring when Angel Mangual hit for the circuit with two men on base in the fifth.

Red Sox 10, Royals 7 at Kansas City (night game):
Carl Yastrzemski observed his 33rd birthday with a two-run homer in the third inning to help the Red Sox defeat the Royals, 10-7. Carlton Fisk and John Kennedy also drove in two runs apiece for the Red Sox, who built up a 10-2 lead before the Royals scored five times in the last two innings, including a homer by John Mayberry with a man on base.

Rangers 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
While Rich Hand and Casey Cox combined on a two-hitter, Dick Billings and Larry Biittner each drove in a run with a double to enable the Rangers to defeat the Brewers, 2-1. Elliott Maddox walked, stole second and scored on Billings' double in the fourth inning. In the same pattern, Maddox walked again in the eighth, stole second and crossed the plate on Biittner's two-bagger.

Dodgers 1, Cardinals 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rick Wise's bad luck in close games continued when the Cardinals righthander lost to the Dodgers, 1-0, in a duel with Al Downing. The defeat was Wise's 10th in 13 games decided by one run. The Dodgers scored in the first inning when Manny Mota beat out an infield hit to Ted Sizemore, advanced on the second basemen's wild throw and scored on a single by Willie Davis. However, the run became earned when Wes Parker also singled. Lou Brock stole his 50th base for the Cardinals and tied Ty Cobb's record of eight seasons with 50 or more thefts.

Reds 5, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Homers by Johnny Bench, Pete Rose and Bill Plummer powered the Reds to a 5-3 victory over the Expos. Rose was on base with a single when Bench belted his drive in the first inning. Rose added his round-tripper in the sixth. Plummer's homer off Mike Marshall in ninth represented the first run given up by the Expos' reliever in his last 29 innings and the first homer off his deliveries in 81 innings.

Mets 4, Astros 2 at New York (night game):
A hero for the second straight time, Jim Beauchamp drove in all of the Mets' runs with a homer and two singles to defeat the Astros, 4-2. The journeyman first baseman-outfielder batted in a run with a single in the second inning and tied the score at 2-2 with his homer in the fourth. Then, in the eighth, after a single by Wayne Garrett, sacrifice by Willie Mays and two passes, Beauchamp singled to provide the Mets with their winning margin. In the previous night's game, Beauchamp smashed two homers, his second blow coming with a man on base in the ninth inning to beat the Astros, 4-2.

Braves 11, Phillies 7 at Philadelphia (night game):
A seven-run rally in the ninth inning, featuring a homer by Jim Breazeale with two men on base, brought the Braves an 11-1 victory over the Phillies. The Braves, who were trailing, 7-4, began their comeback with a run on a double by Ralph Garr and single by Dusty Baker. Earl Williams walked and Breazeale followed with his homer to put the Braves ahead. Not content with just taking the lead, the Braves went on to add three more runs on singles by Darrell Evans, Mike Lum and Gil Garrido and a triple by Sonny Jackson.

Cubs 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Fergie Jenkins drew closer to his sixth straight 20-victory season when the Cubs defeated the Padres, 4-3. The win was No. 18 for Jenkins, who survived one bad inning. After the Cubs scored on a single by Ron Santo and triple by Rick Monday in the second, the Padres erupted for their runs on a triple by Fred Kendall, single by Steve Arlin and homer by Jerry Morales in the third. The Cubs then came back with three runs in the fifth. Jose Cardenal beat out an infield hit and Billy Williams and Joe Pepitone walked. Santo and Monday each drove in a run with a single to tie the score and when Dave Roberts fumbled a grounder by Elrod Hendricks, the Cubs' winning run crossed the plate.

Pirates 1, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
A single by Ken Henderson with two out in the seventh inning deprived Nelson Briles of a perfect game as the Pirates' righthander defeated the Giants, 1-0. Briles retired the first 20 Giants before Henderson smashed a line drive down the first base line. Willie Stargell leaped for the ball, but it crashed off his glove into right field. Henderson, who thus hit safely in his 18th straight game, was the only Giant to reach base. Briles won his duel with Juan Marichal on an unearned run in the first inning when Roberto Clemente reached second on a throwing error by Tito Fuentes and scored on a double by Stargell. Roberto Clemente, who had been sidelined with pulled heel tendons, was back in the Pirates' starting lineup for the first time since July 23.
