Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Rangers 0 at Boston (night game):
Winning for the fourth straight time, Luis Tiant allowed only four hits and pitched the Red Sox to a 4-0 victory over the Rangers. Luis Aparicio hit a two-run homer and Carl Yastrzemski scored the two other tallies.

Indians 2, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Alex Johnson tripled with two out in the 11th inning to score Buddy Bell and give the Indians a 2-1 victory over the Angels. Bell singled, Jack Brohamer sacrificed and Chris Chambliss flied out before Johnson decided the game with his three-bagger.

[DH] Yankees 4, Royals 1 (night game) / Royals 5, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Two-run homers by Amos Otis and John Mayberry carried the Royals to a 5-1 victory in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader after the Yankees had won the first game, 4-1, with the aid of Felipe Alou's 2,000th major league hit. After Bobby Murcer homered for the Yankees in the seventh inning of the opener to tie the score at 1-1, Thurman Munson walked in the eighth, took third on a single by Roy White and counted the go-ahead run when Alou singled. Ron Swoboda walked to load the bases and Celerino Sanchez singled to add two extra runs. In the nightcap, Otis homered after a pass to Freddie Patek in the fifth inning and Mayberry connected for the circuit following a walk to Carl Taylor in the sixth.

Orioles 5, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Rallying for three runs in the ninth inning, the Orioles defeated the Athletics, 5-3, and moved into a tie for first place in the A. L. East with the rained-out Tigers. The A's, meanwhile, dropped a full game behind the White Sox in the West. The White Sox also were rained out. The Athletics had homers by Reggie Jackson and Dave Duncan against one by Terry Crowley for the Orioles and held a 3-2 lead going into the ninth. Davey Johnson singled to ignite the Orioles' rally and gave way on the paths to Mark Belanger, who took second on a sacrifice by Johnny Oates and scored the tying run on a pinch-single by Tommy Davis. Tom Shopay came into run for Davis and scored the deciding run on a triple by Don Buford, who also crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Rollie Fingers.

Braves 2, Mets 1 at Atlanta (night game):
After the Braves picked up an unearned run in the fourth inning, Ralph Garr homered in the fifth to beat the Mets, 2-1. John Milner hit a round-tripper for the Mets' run in the seventh.

Giants 11, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Hot-hitting Ken Henderson smashed two homers and two singles to lead the Giants' attack in an 11-2 victory over the Cubs. Henderson hit a wasted single in the first inning, but then homered with two men on base in the third, added a solo swat in the fifth and accounted for his fifth RBI of the game with a single in the sixth.

Reds 6, Phillies 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Still without a victory this season, Ken Reynolds suffered his 12th straight defeat when the Reds beat the Phillies. 6-1. The lefty, who tied the Philadelphia club record for most consecutive losses, was knocked out in the fourth inning when the Reds exploded for five runs on four hits, three walks, two of them intentional, and a sacrifice fly. Don Gullett hurled the route for the Reds, allowed only three hits and gained his third straight victory to mark his recovery of stamina after an early-season attack of hepatitis.

Expos 4, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Mike Marshall, the Expos' relief ace, not only gained his 14th victory but also provided his own winning run with a double in the ninth inning that beat the Astros, 4-3. Ron Fairly batted in two runs with a single and homer to help the Expos take a 3-1 lead before Marshall replaced Bill Stoneman in the seventh. Cesar Cedeno walked and Jim Wynn tied the score with a homer. In the ninth, John Boccabella doubled and, after a walk to Fairly, Marshall came through with the first extra-base hit of his career with the Expos.

[DH] Pirates 3, Dodgers 2 (night game) / Dodgers 4, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
An error in the 12th inning enabled the Pirates to win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 3-2, before the Dodgers came back to take the second game, 4-3, on a balk by Bruce Kison that allowed the deciding run to score in the seventh inning. Until the 12th, all runs in the lidlifter scored on homers. Rennie Stennett provided the Pirates' first run with a round-tripper in the first inning. Steve Garvey connected for the circuit with a man on base to put the Dodgers ahead in the second and Richie Hebner saved the Pirates from defeat with the tying homer in the ninth. In the 12th, Dave Cash reached second base on a throwing error by Bill Russell and, after an intentional pass to Roberto Clemente, Manny Sanguillen singled to drive in the winning run. In the nightcap, Russell doubled in the seventh, moved to third on an infield out and then was waved home by the umpires on Kison's balk to score what prove to be the Dodgers' deciding run.

[DH] Cardinals 7, Padres 4 (night game) / Padres 8, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals pounded their way to a 7-4 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader but then failed to hold a 6-1 lead and lost the second game to the Padres, 8-7. Ted Simmons and Matty Alou each had three hits for the Cardinals in the opener, Simmons' blows including a homer in seventh inning. Reggie Cleveland, benefitting from the attack, ended his personal five-game losing streak. Nate Colbert drove in three runs for the Padres with a single and homer. Joe Torre hit his first homer since July 20 in the nightcap, driving in three runs in the first inning, and Bernie Carbo also homered as the Cardinals took their big lead before the Padres rallied for five runs to tie the score in the seventh. After the Cardinals went ahead again in the seventh, Derrel Thomas singled to open the eighth, took third on a single by Corrales and scored the tying run on a groundout by Cito Gaston. Curt Blefary walked and, after an error filled the bases, Dave Roberts beat out infield hit to drive in the deciding run.
