Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 10, Rangers 3 at Boston (day game):
Carlton Fisk drove in four runs and Rico Petrocelli batted in three to lead the Red Sox to a 10-3 victory over the Rangers. Petrocelli knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded double in the first inning and added his other RBI with a homer in the fifth. Fisk singled a run across in the third and connected for the circuit with two aboard in the eighth.

Angels 1, Indians 0 at California (night game):
Showing remarkable stamina, Nolan Ryan traveled the 12-inning route in a three-hour, 25-minute game and pitched the Angels to a 1-0 victory over the Indians for his eighth shutout of the season. The Indians used two pitchers, Milt Wilcox and Phil Hennigan, with the loss going to Hennigan. The Angels broke up the game in the 12th with a double by Leroy Stanton, intentional pass to Jim Spencer, long fly by John Stephenson to right field on which Stanton took third and a sacrifice fly by Winston Llenas, who batted for Ryan.

Brewers 4, White Sox 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers rallied for two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the White Sox, 4-3. With Pat Kelly hitting a homer, the White Sox held a 3-1 lead until the sixth when Wilbur Wood was lifted after the Brewers scored their second run. Terry Forster was on the mound in the ninth when Ellie Rodriguez singled, pinch-runner Brock Davis moved up on a sacrifice and John Felske singled. Forster then retired Rick Auerbach, but when Joe Azcue was announced as the pinch-hitter for Jerry Bell, the White Sox brought Cy Acosta in from the bullpen. Johnny Briggs then batted for Azcue and walked. Dave May beat out an infield hit to load the bases and George Scott singled to drive in the winning run.

[DH] Tigers 5, Twins 3 (day game) / Tigers 1, Twins 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Winning by homers in the 11th inning for the second and third times in a row, the Tigers defeated the Twins in a doubleheader, 5-3 and 1-0, and moved into sole possession of first place in the East division, 1½ lengths ahead of the Orioles. The Tigers averted a loss in the opener when Bill Freehan singled and Mickey Stanley doubled to tie the score at 3-3 in the ninth inning. In the 11th, Al Kaline singled and Willie Horton won the game with a homer. Joe Coleman hurled the route for the Tigers in the nightcap and allowed only four hits. Ray Corbin matched ciphers with Coleman for 10 innings before going out for a pinch-hitter. Dave LaRoche relieved and, after he retired Dick McAuliffe, Aurelio Rodriguez came to the plate and smashed a homer. Rodriguez also hit a homer with a man on base in the 11th inning of the previous day's game to give the Tigers a 5-3 victory over the Twins.

[DH] Yankees 7, Royals 6 (day game) / Yankees 9, Royals 8 at New York (day game):
The Yankees, after trailing 6-0, rallied to win the first game of a doubleheader, 7-6, and then completed the sweep by defeating the Royals, 9-8, in 16 innings in the second game behind the tremendous relief pitching of Lindy McDaniel. Richie Scheinblum drove in four runs with a double and bases-loaded triple and John Mayberry hit a homer to stake the Royals to their lead in the opener. However, the Yankees caught up and then scored the winning run in the ninth. Celerino Sanchez walked, Bobby Murcer singled and Roy White beat out a bunt to load the bases. Ron Swoboda fouled out, but Johnny Callison capped the Yankees' comeback with a single to drive in the winning run. The Yankees took a 6-1 lead in the nightcap, only to fall behind when the Royals erupted for four runs in the eighth and three in the ninth. The Yankees then rallied to tie the score just when their cause appeared hopeless. White and Felipe Alou singled, but John Ellis grounded into a double play. However, Sanchez singled to drive in White and then scored himself on singles by Jerry Kenney and Thurman Munson. McDaniel took the mound in the 10th and yielded only one hit in seven innings of relief. The Yankees rewarded him with his first victory of the season when Sanchez doubled in the 16th, Kenney drew an intentional pass, Gene Michael beat out a bunt and Horace Clarke hit a sacrifice fly.

A's 2, Orioles 1 at Oakland (day game):
The Orioles, who had won five straight games in Oakland this season and eight in a row over two years, were stopped on their streak with a 2-1 loss to the Athletics. The Orioles put runners on base in every inning but scored only on a homer by Dave McNally in the third. The A's tied the game in their half when Tim Cullen singled and scored from second with two out on a single by Reggie Jackson. Bert Campaneris singled in the eighth, Joe Rudi sacrificed and Jackson doubled to drive in the winning run. Sergio Robles singled for the Orioles in the ninth in his first major league time at bat, but Bobby Grich rolled into a double play to end the game.

Mets 13, Braves 6 at Atlanta (day game):
Tom Seaver hit one of the Mets' four homers and beat the Braves, 13-6, for his 16th victory. John Milner started the Mets' slugging with a circuit clout in the first inning. Seaver homered with a man on base to produce two of the Mets' four runs in the second. A round-tripper by Tommie Agee helped the Mets add four more runs in the third. Ken Boswell rapped the Mets' other homer in the eighth. Seaver, after holding the Braves scoreless for six innings, wilted in the 91-degree heat and gave up four runs, three of them scoring on a homer by Darrell Evans. Danny Frisella pitched the last two innings.

Cubs 9, Giants 3 at Chicago (day game):
Don Kessinger, making up for two errors on one play, snapped a tie with a two-run single in the seventh inning to put the Cubs ahead in a 9-3 victory over the Giants. Ken Henderson hit an inside-the-park homer for the Giants in the fourth and Kessinger's misplay allowed two unearned runs to score in the sixth. The Cubs rallied with three runs to pull even in their half and went ahead when Carmen Fanzone walked, Paul Popovich doubled and Kessinger singled in the seventh. Billy Williams homered in the eighth and the Cubs went on to add three more runs on walks to Popovich, Bill North and Kessinger with the bases loaded.

Reds 7, Phillies 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Joe Morgan hit his 16th homer, the high for any season in his career, to mark the Reds' 7-2 victory over the Phillies. Morgan also rapped a double and single and drove in three runs. Pete Rose hit a triple and two doubles, while Denis Menke contributed a homer to the Reds' attack.

Astros 8, Expos 2 at Houston (day game):
Playing their first game under Leo Durocher as new manager, the Astros defeated the Expos, 8-2. The crowd of 13,362 greeted the Lip's first appearance on the field with a mixture of cheers and boos. The Astros took charge of the game with three runs in the second inning on a single by Lee May, sacrifice by Johnny Edwards, single by Doug Rader, triple by Jesus Alou and sacrifice fly by Tommy Helms. The Astros added three more runs in the third, two scoring on a single by Jim Wynn and one on a single by Alou. Rader hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Dodgers 7, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Wrecking the Pirates' strategy, Chris Cannizzaro batted in two runs with a two-out double in the eighth inning to send the Dodgers on their way to a 7-4 victory. Bill Buckner hit a two-run homer to put the Dodgers ahead in the seventh, 4-3, but the Pirates tied the score in their half on singles by Manny Sanguillen and Richie Hebner around a sacrifice. Wes Parker opened the Dodgers' eighth with a double and, after two groundouts, Nelson Briles passed Bill Russell intentionally to get at Cannizzaro, who made the Pirates walk the plank by rapping his double.

Cardinals 9, Padres 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Rick Wise doubled with the bases loaded and drove in three of the Cardinals' six runs in the first inning to help himself to a 9-2 victory over the Padres.
