Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 6, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
The slugging of Mike Andrews, who drove in five runs with a homer and double, enabled the White Sox to defeat the Red Sox, 6-4. Andrews hit his homer with two men on base in the fourth inning and batted in two runs with his double in the sixth. Luis Alvarado ran for Andrews and scored on a hit by Rich Morales. The Chisox were forced to call on five pitchers to stop the Red Sox, who left the bases loaded in first, fifth and seventh innings.

Orioles 2, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Jim Palmer scattered five hits and pitched the Orioles to a 2-0 victory over the Twins. Don Baylor homered in the fifth inning to provide the only run that Palmer needed, but the Orioles added an unearned tally in the eighth when Bobby Grich was safe on an error, advanced on an infield out and scored on a single by Boog Powell.

A's 5, Indians 4 at Oakland (night game):
A pinch-homer by Angel Mangual with two men on base climaxed a rally by the Athletics, who scored all their runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Indians, 5-4. Matty Alou, playing his first game in an Oakland uniform since being acquired from the Cardinals, singled to ignite the outburst. Reggie Jackson walked and, after an infield out, Sal Bando was handed an intentional pass. Ted Kubiak sent one run home with a sacrifice fly and Gene Tenace batted in another with a single before Mike Hegan was announced as a pinch-hitter. When the Indians brought in Mike Kilkenny to replace Steve Dunning, Mangual took Hegan's place at the plate and smashed his homer. Roy Foster and Graig Nettles accounted for the Indians' scoring with two-run homers.

Reds 5, Mets 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds erupted for four runs in the sixth inning, three coming on a homer by Bobby Tolan, to defeat the Mets, 5-2. Gary Nolan, making his first start for the Reds since being sidelined with arm trouble August 2, pitched six innings, according to the pre-game plans of manager Sparky Anderson, and then gave way to pinch-hitter George Foster, who doubled. Pete Rose walked and Joe Morgan singled for the first run before Tolan came to the plate and hit his homer. Denis Menke added a round-tripper in the seventh for the Reds' final tally.

Pirates 5, Padres 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell smashed a pair of two-run homers to power the Pirates to a 5-3 victory over the Padres. Stargell hit his first homer of the game after a single by Al Oliver in the fourth inning. Richie Hebner singled and Gene Alley doubled for another run in the fifth before Roberto Clemente singled and Stargell homered again in the sixth. Leron Lee and Nate Colbert whacked back-to-back homers for the Padres in the ninth.

Cardinals 4, Giants 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Starting with a leadoff homer by Lou Brock, the Cardinals scored four runs off Juan Marichal in the first 2 2/3 innings and beat the Giants, 4-2, behind the three-hit pitching of Don Durham. After Brock's belt, two more runs crossed the plate in the first on a pair of walks and a double by Luis Melendez. Bernie Carbo doubled and scored on a single by Ted Simmons in the third before Marichal was lifted.
