Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, Tigers 0 at California (night game):
The shutout leader of the major leagues with his ninth of the season, Nolan Ryan pitched the Angels to a 4-0 victory to knock the Tigers out of first place in the East division behind the idle Orioles. The Angels jumped on Woodie Fryman for all their runs in the first inning on a walk, hit batsman, single by Bob Oliver, double by Ken McMullen and single by Leo Cardenas.

Brewers 7, Royals 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
After giving up the Royals' runs in the first inning, Skip Lockwood settled down and pitched the Brewers to a 7-3 victory. The Brewers rebounded with three runs in their half of the first to tie the score and went ahead with three more in the second on a bases-loaded single by Dave May and infield out by George Scott. Tommie Reynolds wrapped up the scoring with a homer in the third.

Yankees 7, Rangers 0 at New York (day game):
Bobby Murcer hit the 100th homer of his major league career, connecting with two men on base in the second inning, to highlight the Yankees' 7-0 victory over the Rangers.

Dodgers 5, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Three unearned runs on errors by Don Kessinger and Ron Santo enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Cubs, 5-3. Two of the Dodgers' three runs in the first inning were tainted on a wild throw by Kessinger. Two walks and a single by Claude Osteen added a run in the sixth before Santo homered with two men on base for the Cubs in the seventh. However, an error by Santo in the eighth gave the Dodgers another unearned run.

Astros 5, Phillies 1 at Houston (night game):
The Astros broke on top with four runs in the third inning and proceeded to beat the Phillies, 5-1. Lee May and Bob Watson each drove in a run with singles and Doug Rader sent them home with a double to climax the outburst.
