Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Orioles 4, Yankees 3 (night game) / Yankees 5, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
The hitting of Bobby Murcer, who rapped a double, homer and single, led the Yankees to a 5-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader after the Orioles rallied behind the relief pitching of Roric Harrison to win the first game, 4-3. The Yankees took a 3-0 lead against Doyle Alexander in the opener before Harrison arrived to pitch scoreless ball the rest of the way. Andy Etchebarren smashed a three-run homer to tie the score in the seventh and the Orioles followed with the deciding marker in the eighth on a single by Don Baylor, wild pitch by Sparky Lyle and double by Paul Blair. Lyle came back to gain his 30th save of the season in the nightcap. Murcer doubled and scored in the first inning and homered in the third. With the score tied, 2-2, Horace Clarke singled in the eighth, Bernie Allen was safe on an error and Murcer singled to break the deadlock. After the next two batters struck out, singles by Felipe Alou and John Ellis added two more runs.

[DH] Twins 2, White Sox 1 (day game) / Twins 4, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
The Western division hopes of the White Sox suffered a double blow with 2-1 and 4-0 losses to the Twins, knocking the Pale Hose 3½ lengths behind the Athletics, who split a twin bill with the Angels. The White Sox scored their only run of the day when Pat Kelly homered in the third inning of the lidlifter. The Twins came back with their winning pair in the seventh. Danny Thompson singled and, after Glenn Borgmann flied out, Bert Blyleven forced Thompson. Jim Nettles followed with a fly that Kelly dropped after a long run. Blyleven scored and Nettles, who received credit for a double, continued to third on the throw home. With Rod Carew at bat, Ed Herrmann tried to pick Nettles off third and threw wildly to allow the deciding run to score. Ray Corbin shut out the White Sox on five hits in the nightcap. Rick Renick had a double and two singles for the Twins, driving in two runs and scoring one.

Tigers 2, Indians 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers moved into a tie with the Orioles for first place in the East Division when Willie Horton knocked in two runs with a triple in the sixth inning to defeat the Indians, 2-1. The Red Sox and Yankees were one-half game behind in the tightly-bunched race. Tony Taylor opened the sixth with a double and, after two out, Gaylord Perry walked Norm Cash intentionally in a move that backfired when Horton hit his triple. The Indians picked up their run off Woodie Fryman in the eighth. Jack Brohamer struck out but reached first safely on a passed ball by Bill Freehan and came around to score on singles by Chris Chambliss and Ray Fosse.

[DH] Red Sox 2, Brewers 0 (day game) / Brewers 6, Red Sox 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Luis Tiant pitched his fourth consecutive shoutout and Carl Yastrzemski hit a two-run homer as the Red Sox won the first game of a doubleheader, 2-0, but four former Boston players helped the Brewers gain a 6-2 victory in the second game. Syd O'Brien and Joe Lahoud smashed homers, George Scott rapped three hits and Ken Brett was the winning pitcher, posting his first victory since July 7.

[DH] A's 10, Angels 5 (day game) / Angels 2, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
Although Nolan Ryan's shutout streak was broken, the fireballing righthander pitched the Angels to a 2-1 victory to split a doubleheader with the Athletics, who smashed three homers among their 12 hits to win the first game, 10-5. Matty Alou and Gene Tenace each homered with a man on base in the second inning of the lidlifter and Blue Moon Odom added a circuit clout in the fifth. Alou's homer was his first in the A. L. since coming to the A's from the Cardinals. Ryan's streak of 34 scoreless innings was snapped at the outset of the nightcap when Bert Campaneris beat out a bunt, took second on a sacrifice, stole third and counted on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Jackson. The Angels tied the score with an unearned run in the fifth and put over the winning run in the sixth on a triple by Vada Pinson and single by Ken McMullen.

Royals 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
John Mayberry and Lou Piniella drove in two runs apiece to lead the Royals to a 4-3 victory over the Rangers. Bill Fahey and Tom Grieve homered for the Rangers' runs, Fahey's drive coming with a man on base.

Braves 6, Astros 5 at Houston (night game):
Hank Aaron, who appeared as a pinch-hitter and lined out in the eighth inning, stayed in the game at first base and provided a key single as the Braves rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Astros, 6-5. Aaron's hit drove in two runs and tied the score after Darrell Evans and Mike Lum singled and Rod Gilbreath walked to load the bases. Gilbreath, who stopped at second on Aaron's single, took third on a wild pitch by Fred Gladding and scored the deciding run on an infield out by Felix Millan.

[DH] Dodgers 6, Reds 5 (night game) / Reds 8, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers committed seven errors, setting a Los Angeles club record, while losing to the Reds in the second game of a doubleheader, 8-4, after winning the first game, 6-5. Oddly, the Dodgers' errors played only a minor role in their defeat. Six of the Reds' eight runs were earned. In the opener, Bill Plummer and Johnny Bench hit homers to pace the Reds to a 3-1 lead before the Dodgers came back with successive circuit clouts by Steve Yeager and Billy Grabarkewitz to go ahead in the fifth, 4-3. Yeager's homer with a man on base was his first in the major leagues. The Dodgers added a run in the eighth, but the Reds rallied for a pair to tie the score in the ninth. In the Dodgers' half, Bill Russell walked and was sacrificed to second. After an intentional pass to Bill Buckner, Jim Lefebvre struck out, but Manny Mota came through with a double to drive in the winning run.

[DH] Cubs 2, Mets 0 (day game) / Mets 7, Cubs 2 at New York (day game):
Carmen Fanzone and Ron Santo hit homers to escort Fergie Jenkins to his 19th victory of the season as the Cubs won the first game of a doubleheader, 2-0, before losing to the Mets in the second game, 7-2. The shutout was Jenkins' fifth of the season and the complete game was his 22nd. Gary Gentry, who started the nightcap for Mets, gained his first victory since July 22. Cleon Jones and Ted Martinez each batted in two runs.

[DH] Pirates 10, Phillies 0 (day game) / Pirates 5, Phillies 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
While Steve Blass and Bruce Kison each pitched a five-hitter, the Pirates turned their big bats loose to defeat the Phillies in a doubleheader, 10-0 and 5-1. Al Oliver smashed a pair of three-run homers to pace the Bucs' support of Blass in the opener. Kison helped himself with a two-run double in the nightcap and Willie Stargell batted in two runs with a triple and homer. The Phillies counted their lone run of the day in the first inning on a single by Larry Bowa and double by Tommy Hutton.

Padres 1, Giants 0 at San Diego (night game):
A homer by Derrel Thomas in the fifth inning carried the Padres to a 1-0 victory over the Giants behind the combined five-hit pitching of Mike Corkins and Gary Ross.

[DH] Expos 1, Cardinals 0 (day game) / Cardinals 8, Expos 7 at St. Louis (day game):
The Cardinals, who were shut out by Carl Morton in the first game of a doubleheader, 1-0, came back to outhit the Expos and win the second game, 8-7. Morton was the winner of his duel with Bob Gibson when Mike Jorgensen walked in the fifth inning, advanced on a groundout and scored on a single by Bob Bailey. Jim Bibby, up from Tulsa (American Association), made his major league debut with the Cardinals in the nightcap and gained the victory. Diego Segui, who relieved the rookie with the Cardinals leading, 7-4, doubled in the seventh inning and scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Ed Crosby. Segui then had trouble on the mound, giving up three runs to the Expos including a homer by Bailey, before saving the game.
