Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Mickey Lolich gained his 20th victory of the season, with help from Chuck Seelbach, when the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 4-3. The Tigers jumped on Jim Palmer for three runs in the first inning on a single by Dick McAuliffe, triple by Mickey Stanley, single by Gates Brown, a hit batsman and single by Aurelio Rodriguez. Brown doubled in the third and counted what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Jim Northrup. The Orioles, after scoring once on a double by Paul Blair and single by Don Baylor in the fourth, added two more runs on four singles in the sixth to force Lolich's departure, but Seelbach pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way.

Red Sox 2, Yankees 0 at Boston (night game):
Hitting a game-winning homer for the second time in two nights, Reggie Smith batted the Red Sox to a 2-0 victory over the Yankees. In the preceding night's game, Smith connected for the circuit with two men on base to give the Red Sox a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. This time, his homer followed a triple by Carl Yastrzemski with two out in the fifth inning and pinned the defeat on Mel Stottlemyre. John Curtis and Bobby Bolin joined in the shutout of the Yankees.

A's 9, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Athletics exploded for six runs in the third inning to sew up a 9-1 victory over the White Sox. Ken Holtzman, who went the route for the A's, gave up the White Sox tally in the first on a walk to Mike Andrews and singles by Dick Allen and Carlos May. Singles by Reggie Jackson and Mike Epstein, a sacrifice and double by Sal Bando put the A's ahead in the second before they broke the game wide open in the third with the first two runs of the outburst counting when Bert Campaneris was safe on an error by Andrews and Joe Rudi homered to kayo Tom Bradley. A single by Matty Alou, double by Jackson and two walks forced in a run and disposed of Rich Gossage. Steve Kealey, becoming the third pitcher of the inning, passed Bando to send another run across the plate and Don Mincher followed with a single for two more tallies. Jackson provided the final run with a homer in the fourth.

[DH] Indians 4, Brewers 3 (night game) / Brewers 5, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Homers helped carry the Indians to a 4-3 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader and set an example for the Brewers, who used round-trippers in return while winning the second game, 5-2. Steve Dunning, the Indians' starting pitcher in the opener, doubled and scored in the third inning and hit a homer in the fifth. The Brewers, who had a circuit clout by Dave May, chased Dunning and went ahead in the seventh, 3-2. However, in the eighth, Chris Chambliss singled with two out and Buddy Bell belted a homer to give the Indians their victory. The Brewers settled the issue in the second game with a homer by Johnny Briggs in the fourth inning and another by George Scott in the eighth. Graig Nettles hit one for the Indians.

Angels 3, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Angels turned two walks into runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Royals, 3-1. Ken McMullen and Leroy Stanton drew passes and Leo Cardenas singled, driving in McMullen to break a 1-1 tie. Jeff Torborg flied out and Cardenas was caught off first, but while the Royals were running him down, Stanton scored from third base.

Twins 2, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
Dick Woodson pitched a two-hitter and Phil Roof, his batterymate, scored one run and drove in another as the Twins defeated the Rangers, 2-0. Roof doubled in the third inning, took third on a sacrifice fly by Woodson and crossed the plate on a single by Rod Carew. Then, in the seventh, after a single by Jim Nettles and an infield out, Roof singled to add the other tally.

Reds 6, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Wayne Simpson gained his first victory since August 1 when the Reds defeated the Dodgers, 6-3. Simpson, who was given a 4-0 lead, shrugged off a three-run homer by Billy Grabarkewltz in the fifth inning and remained on the mound until giving way to Clay Carroll in the ninth.

Expos 7, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
Ken Singleton continued his hot hitting with a homer, double and single to lead the Expos to a 7-3 victory over the Mets. Ron Woods also homered for the Expos in support of Mike Torrez, who gained his 15th victory. Mike Marshall relieved in the eighth inning and chalked up his 16th save.

Phillies 3, Cardinals 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Ken Reynolds, who lost his first 12 decisions before beating the Braves, 11-1, September 1, made it two straight victories by pitching the Phillies past the Cardinals, 3-2. The Phillies jumped on Lowell Palmer, making his first start for the Cardinals, for two runs in the second inning on a walk to Joe Lis, double by Greg Luzinski and single by Don Money. Larry Bowa singled in the fifth, stole second and scored what proved to be the winning run on a double by Tommy Hutton. Bill Stein, playing in his first major league game with the Cardinals, homered in the ninth inning.

Pirates 4, Cubs 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Staked to a three-run lead in the first inning, Dock Ellis pitched the Pirates to a 4-0 victory over the Cubs. Milt Pappas was scheduled to start for the Cubs but was called home by a family illness and Dan McGinn drew the assignment. The Pirates wasted no time against the lefthander. Gene Clines and Al Oliver singled and Roberto Clemente tripled for the first two runs and, after two were out, Richie Hebner singled for the third marker. The Pirates wrapped up the scoring with their final tally in the fourth on singles by Hebner and Gene Alley and a grounder by Clines.

Giants 6, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Homers by Jim Ray Hart and Garry Maddox were the potent blows as the Giants scored six runs in the first two innings to defeat the Padres, 6-0, behind the pitching of Ron Bryant. Hart hit his homer in the first following a single by Maddox and pass to Ken Henderson. In the second, Damaso Blanco singled, moved up on a sacrifice and scored when Gary Matthews singled for his first major league hit. Maddox then homered to add the Giants' final two runs.
