Tigers 2, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Woodie Fryman, a Tigers' pick-up from the National League, pitched a two-hitter and beat the Orioles, 2-1, for the veteran lefthander's fifth victory against two losses since being obtained from the Phillies. Gates Brown homered for the Tigers in the first inning and their deciding run followed in the seventh when Jim Northrup walked, Aurelio Rodriguez singled and Ed Brinkman doubled. Fryman gave up a double to Brooks Robinson in the sixth and a pinch-homer by Don Buford in the seventh.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 2 at Boston (night game):
Although stopped on his streak of four straight shutouts, Luis Tiant posted his seventh victory in succession when the Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 4-2. Carl Yastrzemski was the batting hero for the Bosox, driving in one run with a single in the first inning and hitting a homer with a man on base in the third. Tiant extended his scoreless string to 40 innings before Felipe Alou doubled and Celerino Sanchez singled for a Yankee run in the fifth. Bobby Murcer homered for the other tally off Tiant in the sixth.

[DH] White Sox 5, Angels 1 (day game) / Angels 9, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
Clyde Wright pitched a six-hitter and smashed a three-run homer as the Angels won the second game of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-4, after Dick Allen batted in four runs with a double and triple to to lead the White Sox to a 5-1 victory in the first game. Allen also accounted for two RBIs in the nightcap to increase his total to 102. In the opener, Allen batted in a run with his double in the first inning, Ed Herrmann homered in the second and Allen iced the decision in the seventh, hitting his triple with the bases loaded to kayo Nolan Ryan. The White Sox used seven pitchers in the nightcap with the loss going to Dave Lemonds, who was routed in the second inning. Consecutive singles by Doug Howard, Leroy Stanton and Jack Hiatt produced the Angels' first run before Wright came to the plate and whacked his homer.

[DH] Royals 5, Twins 0 (night game) / Royals 3, Twins 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Tom Murphy, who had been recalled from Omaha, and Steve Busby, who was also brought up from the American Association club, pitched the Royals to 5-0 and 3-2 victories in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Twins. Murphy, making his first start since his recall, scattered six hits in posting the shutout. The Royals decided the outcome with three runs off Bert Blyleven in the third inning. Ed Kirkpatrick singled, Paul Schaal doubled and both scored on a single by Freddie Patek. After advancing on the throw home, Patek moved to third on a bunt and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Amos Otis. Busby, making his major league debut, pitched a five-hitter in the nightcap. John Mayberry provided the big blow for the rookie, smashing a homer with a man on base in the sixth inning.

A's 6, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Mike Epstein collected four hits in five trips and drove in four runs to lead the Athletics to a 6-3 victory over the Rangers. The slugging first baseman smashed a homer with two men on base in the fourth inning and then accounted for his fourth RBI with a double in the ninth. Catfish Hunter gained his 19th victory with help from Darold Knowles.

Braves 4, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run homer by Earl Williams and two-run single by Dusty Baker carried the Braves to a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers. Williams hit his homer in the third inning. Baker's single in the eighth came after the Braves had loaded the bases on a single by Sonny Jackson and walks to Darrell Evans and Williams.

[DH] Pirates 7, Expos 1 (night game) / Pirates 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
After winning the first game, 7-1, the Pirates were forced to battle 12 innings before defeating the Expos, 4-2, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader. Bob Johnson pitched a three-hitter in the opener and Vic Davalillo drove in two runs with a homer and single. Mike Jorgensen homered to save the Expos from being shutout. The Expos forced the nightcap into extra innings when Ron Woods homered with two out in the ninth to tie the score at 2-2. In the 12th, with Davalillo on base and two out, Mike Marshall walked Roberto Clemente intentionally to get at Bob Robertson, who wrecked the move by hitting a double to drive in both runners. The defeat was the first for the Expos in an overtime game at home this season after victories in eight others.

[DH] Mets 8, Cardinals 2 (night game) / Cardinals 9, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
The Mets, who used two homers to help win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-2, fell victim in turn to two homers as the Cardinals erupted in the 13th inning to take the second game, 9-4. John Milner had five hits in five trips for the Mets in the opener, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Ken Boswell connected for the circuit with two men on base in the eighth. Milner homered again in the first inning of the nightcap. The Mets used a double by Ed Kranepool and triple by Duffy Dyer to take a 4-1 lead in the seventh, but the Cardinals rallied to tie the score in the eighth. A walk, double by Bill Voss and single by Lou Brock produced one run. After Brock stole second, Joe Torre singled to drive in Voss and Brock. In the 13th after two walks, Ted Simmons homered off Danny Frisella to shatter the deadlock. Ken Reitz followed with a single and, after Bob Rauch relieved, Dwain Anderson also hit for the circuit.

Cubs 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Fergie Jenkins reached the 20-victory mark for the sixth straight season when the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 4-3. The Phillies scored on a homer by Willie Montanez in the second inning and took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, but Don Kessinger singled and Billy Williams homered to tie the score in the sixth. The Cubs then gave Jenkins his victory when Kessinger and Jose Cardenal hit doubles for the winning run in the eighth.

Astros 5, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The Astros put together a double by Jim Wynn and five singles for four runs in the third inning to defeat the Giants, 5-3. Chris Speier and Jim Ray Hart homered for the Giants.
