Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Orioles 2, Brewers 1 (night game) / Orioles 8, Brewers 0 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles, who won the first game, 2-1, with a two-out homer by Terry Crowley in the ninth inning, completed the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader by defeating the Brewers in the second game, 8-0, behind the two-hit pitching of Doyle Alexander. Ollie Brown homered in the second inning for the Brewers' run in the lidlifter. The Orioles tied the score in the eighth when Davey Johnson doubled, Mark Belanger sacrificed and Tommy Davis delivered a single as a pinch-hitter for Dave McNally. Eddie Watt then was the winner on Crowley's clout off Jim Lonborg. Davis started the second game at first base for the Orioles and collected four straight hits. Don Baylor and Johnson rapped homers.

White Sox 3, Angels 2 at Chicago (night game):
Respecting Dick Allen's power, the Angels walked the slugger purposely in the eighth inning, but Carlos May stepped to the plate and drove in a run with a single to win the game for the White Sox, 3-2. The White Sox scored their first two runs in the second on a single by May, double by Rick Reichardt and single by Ed Spiezio. The Angels used singles by Jeff Torborg and Ken Berry, around two infield outs, to count once in the third and tied the score in the fourth when Pat Kelly dropped a fly by Sandy Alomar for a three-base error and Berry grounded out to allow Alomar to cross the plate. In the eighth, Kelly helped make up for his error by drawing a walk. Mike Andrews sacrificed. After a pass to Allen, May hit his single.

Indians 2, Red Sox 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Gaylord Perry, who won 21 games for the Giants in 1966 and 23 in 1970, became the first pitcher in 40 years to enter the charmed circle in both leagues when the Indians' righthander gained his 20th victory by defeating the Red Sox, 2-1, in 10 innings. Carl Mays, who won 27 games for the Yankees in 1921 and 20 for the Reds in 1924, was the last previous hurler to turn the trick. Perry owed thanks to Graig Nettles, who won the game with a homer. The Indians huffed and puffed to their initial run in the first. Del Unser walked, took second on a wild pitch and stopped at third on a single by Jack Brohamer. Chris Chambliss grounded to Carl Yastrzemski, who threw home to nail Unser, but Ray Fosse followed with a single to score Brohamer. Buddy Bell committed his first major league error in the seventh to allow the Red Sox to tie score. Yastrzemski beat out an infield hit, took third on a single by Reggie Smith and continued home when Bell threw wildly from center field.

Yankees 3, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
A homer by Bernie Allen and run-scoring singles by Felipe Alou and Bobby Murcer enabled the Yankees to defeat the Tigers, 3-1. Allen hit his homer in the third inning. Murcer singled in the fourth and, running with two out, scored from first base on a single by Alou. Murcer singled again in the seventh and sent Horace Clarke home from second with an insurance run. The Tigers scored their run in the third on a pass to Frank Howard with the bases loaded. Sparky Lyle, who relieved Rob Gardner in the eighth, gave up two singles in the ninth but pitched out of the jam to record his 32nd save of the season.

Twins 3, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Back-to-back doubles by Jim Nettles and Danny Thompson in the 13th inning gave the Twins a 3-2 victory over the Royals. John Mayberry homered with a man on base for the Royals in the fourth. The Twins tied the score with runs in the fifth and sixth on sacrifice flies by Glenn Borgmann and Harmon Killebrew.

Rangers 3, A's 2 at Texas (night game):
After scoring twice in the first inning, the Rangers used a double steal in the second to set up what proved to be the deciding run in a 3-2 victory over the Athletics. The Rangers loaded the bases in the first when Dave Nelson and Larry Biittner walked and Dick Billings singled. Ted Ford hit a sacrifice fly for the first run and Bill Fahey singled to drive in the second tally. Nelson doubled in the second and Joe Lovitto was hit by a pitch. A double steal followed and Biittner then hit a sacrifice fly.

Dodgers 4, Astros 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Claude Osteen pitched a three-hitter and Steve Garvey drove in three runs with a homer and single as the Dodgers defeated the Astros, 4-0. Garvey's single accounted for two of the Dodgers' three runs off Jerry Reuss in the first inning and his homer off Jim Ray wrapped up the scoring in the eighth.

Pirates 8, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Al Oliver and Richie Hebner each homered with a man on base in the fifth inning to help power the Pirates to an 8-3 victory over the Expos. The Pirates also had an inside-the-park homer by Rennie Stennett in the third. Tim Foli committed three errors in one inning -- one less than the major league record for shortstops -- and Hector Torres threw in one to enable the Pirates to score three unearned runs in the second. All of the Expos' runs off Steve Blass in the eighth were unearned. Mike Jorgensen doubled with one out. Bob Robertson dropped a foul by Coco Laboy for an error. Returning to the plate, Laboy singled to score Jorgensen. After Ken Singleton was retired, Ron Fairly hit a homer.

Mets 3, Cardinals 1 at New York (day game):
The victim of two errors by Lou Brock in left field, Bob Gibson was the loser when the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 3-1. Ken Boswell singled in the first inning, took third on a single by Ed Kranepool and continued home when Brock let the ball roll through his legs. In the second, Brock dropped a fly by Wayne Garrett for a two-base error. After advancing on an infield out, Garrett scored on a single by Bud Harrelson. A walk and singles by Garrett and Harrelson produced the Mets' only earned run off Gibson in the fourth. Gary Gentry held the Cardinals hitless until Bernie Carbo homered in the sixth. The Redbirds loaded the bases with two out in the eighth, but Tug McGraw relieved and saved the game by retiring Ted Sizemore on a grounder.

Cubs 7, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Ron Santo drove in three runs with an infield out and a pair of singles to pace the Cubs to a 7-4 victory over the Phillies. Santo collected his first RBI in the opening frame when the Cubs counted twice and batted in another run with a single in the third. The Phillies picked up a run in the fourth and tied the score with a pair on a triple by Larry Bowa in the fifth. However, the Cubs broke away in the sixth when Rick Monday and Carmen Fanzone each drove in a run with a double. Jim Hickman tripled in the seventh and scored when Santo singled for his third RBI.

Giants 2, Reds 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Breaking up a three-hit duel between Jim Willoughby and Don Gullett, Dave Kingman smashed a homer with a man on base in the ninth inning to give the Giants a 2-1 victory over the Reds. Jim Ray Hart walked and Garry Maddox came in to run for him before Kingman connected. The Reds scored their run in the seventh on a safe bunt by Bobby Tolan, single by Johnny Bench and sacrifice fly by Tony Perez.
