Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, Brewers 0 at Baltimore (day game):
Jim Palmer was the winner in a duel with Skip Lockwood when the Orioles defeated the Brewers, 2-0. Bobby Grich singled in the first inning, stole second and scored an unearned run on a passed ball and throwing error by Ellie Rodriguez. Boog Powell doubled in the sixth and crossed the plate on a single by Terry Crowley.

Angels 5, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Bob Oliver, Leroy Stanton and Billy Parker produced all of the Angels' runs in a 5-1 victory over the White Sox. When Oliver connected with a man on base in the opening frame, the homer was the first given up by Wilbur Wood in 57 innings. Stanton's blow accounted for two more runs in the fourth. Parker hit the first homer of his major league career to account for the Angels' final tally in the ninth.

[DH] Red Sox 5, Indians 1 (day game) / Red Sox 2, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Triggered by Carlton Fisk, who hit his 20th homer of the season, the Red Sox scored four runs in the 12th inning to shoot down the Indians, 5-1, in the first game of a doubleheader before completing the sweep with a 2-0 victory in the second game. The Red Sox scored in the fourth inning of the lidlifter on a walk to Luis Aparicio, an infield out and a single by Reggie Smith. Marty Pattin protected the 1-0 lead until the ninth when Graig Nettles homered to tie the score. Bob Veale, who made his A. L. debut in relief of Pattin in the 11th, gained the victory. After Fisk shattered the deadlock with his homer in the 12th, the Red Sox followed with three more runs on a walk, singles by Doug Griffin and Phil Gagliano, an error and a safe squeeze bunt by Aparicio. John Curtis posted the shutout in the nightcap, pitching a five-hitter. The Red Sox scored an unearned run without the benefit of a hit in the second inning and did not add their other tally until Aparicio homered in the ninth.

Yankees 5, Tigers 0 at Detroit (day game):
Mel Stottlemyre pitched a three-hitter and Horace Clarke and Bobby Murcer drove in two runs apiece as the Yankees defeated the Tigers, 5-0. Clarke knocked in a run with a single in the third inning and added a homer in the sixth. The Yankees finished beating Mickey Lolich with three unearned runs in the eighth. Roy White doubled one run home and Murcer followed with a two-run single.

Royals 3, Twins 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Dick Drago, who made his first appearance since being struck on the jaw by a line drive September 1, allowed only four hits and pitched the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Twins. The Royals decided the game with two out in the first inning when Richie Scheinblum walked and John Mayberry homered. Harmon Killebrew clouted a round-tripper for the Twins in the sixth, but the Royals offset it with a run in the eighth on a walk to Mayberry, a sacrifice and a single by Paul Schaal.

A's 7, Rangers 2 at Texas (day game):
The departure of Rich Hand after seven innings of pitching proved to be exactly what the A's needed to defeat the Rangers, 7-2. Hand allowed only three hits and was leading, 2-1, when he was removed for a pinch-hitter. Jim Panther took the mound in the eighth and the A's fell on him, Steve Lawson and Pete Broberg for six runs, all unearned as far as team pitching records were concerned, to break the game wide open.

Dodgers 3, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Fred Gladding failed in relief of Dave Roberts and was the loser when the Dodgers rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Astros, 3-2. Both of the Astros' runs in the third were unearned on a throwing error by Billy Grabarkewitz. Roberts, sailing along with a 2-0 lead, was removed in the eighth after Manny Mota singled and Willie Davis doubled. Wes Parker and Frank Robinson greeted Gladding's arrival with singles to drive in the tying run. Steve Garvey then bunted for a hit down the third base line and when Gladding threw wildly to first, Parker scored the deciding run.

Expos 8, Pirates 2 at Montreal (day game):
Erupting for six runs in the third inning, the Expos defeated the Pirates, 8-2. The Expos, who sent 11 men to bat, started the outburst with a single by Boots Day. After a forceout by Tim Foli, Ken Singleton walked and Ron Fairly singled to score Foli. Mike Jorgensen followed with a three-run homer. A walk to Coco Laboy and double by Hector Torres added another tally to chase Bruce Kison. Singles by Torres and Day off Luke Walker produced the sixth run before the inning ended.

Mets 3, Cardinals 2 at New York (day game):
Tom Seaver, who pitched five innings before leaving the game with a sore muscle, gained credit for the victory when the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 3-2. Rick Wise, who was the loser, continued to have bad luck in close games. The defeat was the Cardinal righthander's 11th by a one-run margin this season. Seaver helped himself with a triple in the third inning and scored on an infield out by Ken Boswell. Ed Kranepool doubled and Cleon Jones singled for another run in the fourth before John Milner accounted for the deciding marker with a homer in the sixth.

Cubs 5, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
Milt Pappas, making his first start since his no-hitter against the Padres September 2, gained his seventh straight victory as the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 5-3. Ken Rudolph, the Cubs' reserve catcher, backed Pappas by driving in three runs with a homer and single.

[DH] Padres 1, Braves 0 (day game) / Braves 4, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
With the help of a homer by Leron Lee, Mike Corkins pitched the Padres to a 1-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Braves came back to win the second game, 4-1. Corkins' shutout was the first of his major league career. Lee belted his homer in the seventh inning off Ron Reed, who was the loser despite yielding a total of only four hits. Corkins gave up seven. In the nightcap, the Braves handed Steve Arlin his ninth defeat in succession. Phil Niekro, the Braves' winner, had a shutout in hand until Johnny Grubb singled with two out in the ninth inning to drive in Nate Colbert with the Padres' lone run.

[DH] Reds 8, Giants 7 (day game) / Giants 8, Reds 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Homers by Willie McCovey and Bobby Bonds helped power the Giants to an 8-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader after the Reds had rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to win the first game, 8-7. Johnny Bench drove in three runs for the Reds in the lidlifter with a homer and single, but the Giants, who had a two-run smash by Tito Fuentes, held a 7-6 lead going into the eighth. Cesar Geronimo and Darrel Chaney started the Reds' rally with singles off Randy Moffitt. Sam McDowell, relieving, uncorked a wild pitch to allow Geronimo to score. Joe Morgan then singled to drive in Chaney with the deciding run. McCovey hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the nightcap to tie the score at 2-2. Juan Marichal was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh but gained the victory when Bonds came up later in the inning and connected for a three-run homer.
